For most Apple Watch owners, Apple’s built-in Heart Rate, Workout, Health and Vitals apps are the best place to start: they provide core heart-rate history, workout tracking and supported alerts without another subscription. Add a third-party app when you need more. HeartWatch is the strongest pick for detailed records and exports, Heart Analyzer for charts and watch-face complications, Athlytic for training readiness, and Welltory for broader HRV and stress interpretation.
These apps do different jobs: a dashboard for stored data is not necessarily a continuous live monitor, and a recovery score is not a medical measurement. The best choice depends on whether you want workout feedback, long-term trends, alerts or coaching.
Best Apple Watch heart-rate apps at a glance

| HeartWatch | Detailed heart history and records | Broad trends, notes, workout analysis and export features | U.S. App Store listing showed $8.99 as a one-time purchase on Aug. 16, 2026; check current local terms |

| Athlytic | Training readiness and exertion | Uses Health data for recovery, sleep, workout effort and training-load insights | Free download with in-app purchases; a U.S. listing showed $29.99 yearly Pro on Aug. 16, 2026 |
| Welltory | HRV, stress and wider wellness context | Apple Health integration and broad device connections | Subscription options; U.S. App Store prices vary by plan and may change |

Do you need a third-party app?
Apple already supplies a useful baseline. Depending on watch model, region and software, Apple Watch can track heart rate during workouts, record heart data in Health, show overnight metrics in Vitals, and offer high- or low-heart-rate notifications and irregular-rhythm notifications. ECG is available only on supported models and in supported regions. Apple’s health-feature guide describes current availability and limitations.

Apple’s Workout app also provides heart-rate information and zones for supported workouts. Apple’s 2026 developer materials describe HealthKit support for workout heart-rate zones in iOS 27 and watchOS 27, including access to current or preferred zones and time spent in zones. That platform capability does not mean every third-party app already supports it; see Apple’s HealthKit updates and its heart-rate-zone documentation. Apple’s Workout overview also describes its workout features.
Stay with Apple’s apps if you mainly want basic workout data, supported notifications and a record in Health. Consider another app if you want more readable long-term charts, a journal and exports, customized workout-zone tools, or coaching based on HRV and resting heart rate.
What “heart-rate monitor app” can mean
- Live display: A current beats-per-minute reading, often shown during a workout. A third-party display does not make the optical sensor more accurate.
- History and analysis: A way to browse readings Apple Watch has already recorded, such as resting, sleeping, walking and workout heart rate, plus trends or HRV.
- Workout zones: Guidance on your current zone, time in each zone and sometimes alerts when you cross a boundary.
- Recovery or wellness interpretation: An app combines signals such as HRV, resting heart rate, sleep and training data into a score or recommendation. Treat that as the app’s interpretation, not a direct medical measurement.
Background readings are sampled periodically; Apple Watch should not be assumed to stream a second-by-second heart rate all day. Workout sessions generally collect more frequent readings. An app that reads Apple Health can reorganize available data, but it cannot recreate samples the watch never recorded.

Apple’s built-in apps: best free starting point
Choose this if: you want basic monitoring, Apple-native workout tracking and supported heart-health notifications without a separate app bill.
Heart Rate on Apple Watch and the Health app on iPhone cover everyday readings and history; Workout records exercise; Vitals presents overnight measurements with typical-range context on supported setups. Apple’s ecosystem is the simplest route for keeping these records together. It is also the first option to try before granting a third party access to sensitive health data.
Trade-offs: Apple’s presentation may not be as convenient as a dedicated dashboard for comparing months of readings, keeping contextual notes, exporting records or getting a training-readiness interpretation. Features are not universal: model, region and OS restrictions apply. For example, Apple says blood oxygen is unavailable in Vitals on certain U.S. Apple Watch models purchased on or after Jan. 18, 2024.
Verdict: The right answer for many users, particularly if alerts and workout records are all they need. Third-party apps are enhancements, not prerequisites.

HeartWatch: best for a detailed heart-data journal
Choose this if: you want to examine patterns, add context and keep a more organized record to discuss with a clinician.
The U.S. App Store listing describes views for daytime, sedentary, sleeping, waking and workout heart rate; trend analysis; background heart-rate alerts on Apple Watch; workout zones; notes; ECG analysis; and export features. It also surfaces other Health data, including HRV and measurements recorded by compatible sources. A listed metric is not proof the app or watch directly measures it: data availability depends on a device or other source having written it to Apple Health.

HeartWatch is more of a history, dashboard and record-keeping tool than a specialized live workout interface. It depends on Apple Health data, so missing Watch readings remain missing. Its U.S. listing showed an $8.99 one-time purchase on Aug. 16, 2026; confirm the App Store price and purchase terms for your storefront before buying.
Verdict: Best fit for people who want detailed records, notes and exports without the recurring-cost model shown in many wellness apps. Do not treat its displays or ECG analysis as a diagnosis.

Heart Analyzer: best for charts and on-watch visibility
Choose this if: you understand data better in charts and want useful information accessible from the watch face.
Heart Analyzer’s listing describes long-term charts, including views extending up to eight years for Data Plus users, daily Heart Reports, Cardio Points statistics, notes in bookmarks and customizable Apple Watch complications. It is a good complement to Health when the main problem is seeing patterns clearly rather than getting a coaching score.
The listing indicates a free download with additional Data Plus features, but the exact current U.S. price and which features are free should be checked in the App Store. A listed iPhone live-heart-rate feature with compatible external monitors is not the same as continuous all-day Apple Watch monitoring: the sensor, connection and session determine update behavior.
Verdict: A strong choice for people who want attractive history views and glanceable watch information. More charts do not necessarily mean more medically meaningful conclusions.

Athlytic: best for training readiness and recovery
Choose this if: you exercise regularly and want heart and sleep data framed around training decisions.
Athlytic uses Apple Health data for recovery, exertion, target exertion, target sleep and bedtime, workout effort, heart-rate zones, aerobic and anaerobic analysis, heart-rate recovery, cardio fitness, training effect and weekly cardio load. Its getting-started information says its recovery calculation compares HRV and resting heart rate with a 60-day average baseline.
That baseline and the resulting scores are the app’s coaching method, not a clinical standard. HRV can shift with sleep, illness, stress, alcohol, medication, measurement timing and watch-wearing consistency. Compare trends with how you feel and perform rather than treating one low score as a diagnosis or an order to train. Zone totals can also differ from Apple Workout when apps use different zone formulas or settings.

Athlytic is free to download with in-app purchases. A U.S. App Store listing showed yearly Pro at $29.99 on Aug. 16, 2026; check current plans and trial terms before subscribing.
Verdict: The best match here for athletes seeking a training-oriented interpretation, not for someone who only wants a heart-rate chart or medical alerts.
Welltory: best for HRV-based stress and broader wellness
Choose this if: you want to combine Apple Watch or Apple Health data with other devices and explore stress, sleep and HRV interpretations.
Welltory’s App Store listing describes Apple Health integration, HRV and heartbeat analysis, stress and sleep analysis, health reports and connections with many devices and apps. It can use blood-pressure data entered manually or synced from a blood-pressure monitor; it explicitly says it cannot measure blood pressure through Apple Watch or a phone camera.
Welltory is broader and more interpretation-heavy than a focused heart-history app. Its U.S. listing displayed several plan signals on Aug. 16, 2026, including annual and lifetime options, but prices and plans vary and can change. Review the current subscription screen, privacy label and privacy policy before linking health accounts or paying. Broad integrations can be useful, but they also make it especially important to understand where data goes and how it is used.
Verdict: Best for a user who wants wellness context across devices and accepts a subscription-oriented model. It is not a blood-pressure monitor or medical-care substitute.
Compare the apps by what they actually do
| App | Primary role | Live workout use | History and charts | Alerts / zones | Recovery or HRV interpretation | Exports or reports |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple apps | Native tracking and health records | Yes, in Workout | Health trends and Vitals, subject to support | Supported heart alerts and workout zones; availability varies | Health displays metrics; not a third-party readiness coach | Health data sharing/export options depend on feature and region |
| HeartWatch | Heart-history dashboard and journal | Workout analysis; not its main distinction | Broad views and multiple trend periods | Listing describes background alerts and zones | Displays HRV and other available Health data | Listing describes exports and notes |
| Heart Analyzer | Charts and watch-face visibility | Watch app and complications; check specific live behavior | Long-term charts and daily reports | Do not assume Apple’s notifications or custom zone alerts are duplicated | Not its central proposition | Reports listed; check current feature tier |
| Athlytic | Training and readiness coaching | Workout features | Training and health analysis | Zones and workout-oriented features | Core purpose, including HRV and resting-heart-rate inputs | Check current export/report capabilities in app |
| Welltory | Stress and wellness interpretation | Not primarily a workout-zone interface | Reports and integrated data views | Not a replacement for Apple’s medical-related notifications | Core purpose | Health reports; verify formats and plan limits |
“Live,” “alerts” and “export” can mean different things across apps and versions. Consult each current App Store listing and in-app feature description for exact behavior; do not infer continuous monitoring from a dashboard or a marketing phrase.
Choose by your main use
- Basic tracking and alerts: Start with Apple’s Heart Rate, Workout, Health and supported notification settings.
- Running or cycling zones: Try Apple Workout first. If you need custom displays or zone-crossing prompts, check that a third-party app explicitly supports the specific Watch workout and alert behavior you want. Align the zone method before comparing results.
- Long-term heart history or a clinician conversation: HeartWatch is the strongest fit for its history, notes and export emphasis. It organizes records; it does not diagnose the cause of a reading.
- At-a-glance charts: Heart Analyzer is the chart-focused option, especially if complications matter.
- “Should I train hard today?”: Athlytic offers a training-oriented framework. Use its recovery score alongside sleep, symptoms and performance.
- Stress and several connected devices: Welltory is the broadest wellness-oriented choice, but review its subscription and privacy terms carefully.
Why two apps can report different heart-rate zones
Zone labels are not universal. An app may calculate them from a percentage of estimated maximum heart rate, heart-rate reserve (which includes resting heart rate), a user-entered maximum, lactate-threshold heart rate, or Apple’s preferred zones. Different methods can assign the same workout minutes to different zones without either app having a faulty sensor.
Before comparing workout summaries, check the settings in both apps and use the same method and inputs where possible. Confirm whether maximum and resting heart rate are estimated or manually set, and whether the app has imported Apple’s zones. Apple’s developer API availability does not guarantee adoption by every app.

With the GPS connectivity, you could get a map of your workout route in the app for outdoor activity by connecting to your phone GPS.
Accuracy, sensor limits and medical safety
A third-party app generally presents data from Apple Watch or another connected sensor; changing the display does not improve the sensor’s fundamental accuracy. Fit and conditions matter: a loose band, motion, tattoos, cold skin, sweat and vigorous activity can affect optical readings. For rapid changes or high-intensity training, a compatible chest strap may be preferable, if the app and Watch setup support it.
Apple Watch is not a continuous clinical monitor. Background heart-rate samples are periodic, while workouts typically produce denser readings. ECG, irregular-rhythm and high/low-heart-rate features have specific operating conditions, model and region limits; they do not identify every abnormal rhythm or guarantee detection of an emergency. An app’s HRV, stress or recovery score is an algorithmic interpretation, not an ECG, diagnosis or substitute for a clinician. A Watch or app also cannot replace a Holter monitor, clinical ECG, pulse oximeter, blood-pressure monitor or prescribed monitoring system.
If you have severe or concerning symptoms, seek urgent medical care rather than waiting for an app alert. For non-urgent questions, share relevant records with a clinician and explain how they were collected. A sustained change accompanied by symptoms is more meaningful to discuss than an isolated score, but only a clinician can assess your situation.
Setup and troubleshooting
Turn on Apple’s supported notifications
- On Apple Watch, open Settings > Heart.
- Review High Heart Rate and Low Heart Rate notifications and set them as appropriate.
- Where offered for your model and region, review Irregular Rhythm notifications. Follow Apple’s setup prompts and eligibility information.
- On iPhone, open Health > Browse > Heart to review available historical data.
- For workout zones, review the Watch’s Workout settings and workout views. Labels and availability may vary by OS release and model.
These settings do not guarantee detection of every abnormal rhythm, and they are not emergency surveillance.

On iPhone, check Health > Sharing > Apps and Services > [app] and confirm read access for the categories its features require, such as heart rate, resting heart rate, HRV, workouts and sleep. Grant only the permissions you are comfortable sharing. Open the app and refresh after permissions are set.
If the app shows gaps, confirm that you wore the Watch, the Watch recorded and synced data, the relevant Health permissions are enabled, and the workout was not ended early. Battery-saving settings can affect tracking behavior. If data remains missing, try revoking and re-enabling the specific Health permissions, refresh again, and contact the developer. Exact menu labels can change between iOS and watchOS releases.
Review privacy and price before adding an app
Check the current App Store privacy label and the developer’s privacy policy rather than relying only on promotional language. Look for whether data is stored locally or in the cloud, used for analytics or advertising, shared with third parties, tied to an account, and removable through account deletion. Also check whether an account is required and what happens to synced data if you stop subscribing. App Store privacy labels are developer-provided disclosures, not an independent guarantee.
Likewise, distinguish a free download from free access to the features you want. Confirm the current U.S. or local storefront price, subscription renewal interval, trial terms, one-time purchase, and any family-sharing option before buying. Prices cited here are dated U.S. signals, not enduring prices.
