There was no single best smartwatch for everyone in 2024: start with your phone. For most iPhone owners, the Apple Watch Series 9 was the all-round choice; Android users should look first at the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 or Google Pixel Watch 3. Fitness-focused buyers may be better served by a Garmin, while the Fitbit Charge 6 is a sensible tracker rather than a full smartwatch. This is a retrospective of the 2024 lineup, not a ranking of products released since then.
Recommendations below draw on the cited expert reviews and their published testing approaches; they are not claims that Watch Ranker independently tested every model. Product availability, software support, prices and regional health features can change. Where no comparable observed battery or price data is available, manufacturer estimates and launch-era distinctions are labeled rather than presented as head-to-head results.
2024 smartwatch picks at a glance
| Pick | Best for | Phone compatibility | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch Series 9 | Most iPhone owners | iPhone; not a practical Android choice | Frequent charging |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 | Most Android users, especially Samsung owners | Android; some features depend on Samsung phones or region | Not for iPhone; battery is short beside Garmin/Amazfit options |
| Google Pixel Watch 3 | Pixel and Google-service users | Android | Not for iPhone; not the pick for long endurance or advanced sports tools |
| Apple Watch Ultra 2 | Rugged, outdoor-focused iPhone users | iPhone | Large and expensive for everyday basics |
| Garmin Venu 3/3S | Fitness, wellness and longer battery life | Android and iPhone, with less deep phone integration | Smaller third-party app ecosystem |
| Garmin Forerunner, Fenix or Epix | Runners and multisport athletes | Android and iPhone | Training-first interface; model-specific features and costs vary |
| Amazfit GTR 4 | Long claimed endurance at a lower-cost smartwatch tier | Android and iPhone | Software polish and app ecosystem trail the major platforms |
| Fitbit Charge 6 | Compact activity and wellness tracking | Android and iPhone | A tracker, not a full app-and-calls smartwatch |
These are use-case recommendations, not laboratory rankings. The products span different categories, and manufacturer battery estimates use different conditions. The cited Tom’s Guide 2024 awards, for example, named Apple Watch Ultra 2 its smartwatch choice while separately naming Fitbit Charge 6 its fitness-tracker choice. That distinction matters: the Charge 6 may be the better buy if you want activity and health tracking, but it does not replace a more complete smartwatch for everyone.
Choose by phone before comparing features
- iPhone: Apple Watch is the natural full-smartwatch option. Series 9 suits most people; Ultra 2 is for those who value a tougher build, larger display and outdoor controls enough to accept its size and cost. Garmin and Amazfit also pair with iPhone, but do not offer the same depth of Apple phone integration. Fitbit is another cross-platform option, with a more tracker-centered experience.
- Android: Compare Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 and Pixel Watch 3 for apps, notifications and phone-connected features. The Galaxy Watch 7 is a broad Wear OS choice, particularly for Samsung owners; Pixel Watch 3 makes sense for Pixel and Google-service users. The 2024 Galaxy and Pixel Wear OS watches are not iPhone watches.
- Either platform, but fitness or battery comes first: Consider Garmin Venu 3/3S for everyday wellness and fitness, or a Forerunner, Fenix or Epix model for serious training. Garmin and Amazfit generally support both major phone platforms, though their phone integration is less comprehensive than Apple, Samsung or Google’s own ecosystems.
“Works with iPhone” or “works with Android” does not mean every advertised feature works identically on every phone. Check the exact model’s pairing requirements, health-feature restrictions and carrier support before buying. A refurbished watch may also remain activation-locked to a previous owner’s account.

What kind of watch do you actually need?
- Phone companion: Prioritize dependable notifications, messages, calls, payments, apps, maps and voice assistant. Apple, Samsung and Google generally have the advantage here.
- Health and wellness watch: Look at sleep, heart rate, stress, cycle-related tools and any ECG feature you will genuinely use. Confirm geography, phone, app and account requirements.
- Sports watch: For structured workouts, GPS, training load, recovery, navigation and multisport profiles, Garmin Forerunner/Fenix/Epix lines often fit better than an app-first watch. Check support for your sport, sensors, maps and data exports.
- Fitness tracker: If steps, sleep, heart rate and basic workouts are enough, Fitbit Charge 6 is smaller and simpler than a full smartwatch. Do not pay for calls and apps you will not use.
- Hybrid: Garmin Vivomove Trend offers a more traditional analog appearance with limited smart and wellness functions. It is not a substitute for a full app ecosystem or LTE watch.
Recommended models, with their compromises
Apple Watch Series 9: best all-round choice for most iPhone owners
Series 9 balances Apple’s app and notification ecosystem, safety features and everyday fitness tracking. It is the straightforward choice for an iPhone owner who wants a watch that acts as an extension of the phone, rather than a dedicated endurance-training computer. Expert Reviews’ 2024 guide also selected Series 9 for iPhone users; its category approach is more useful than treating one premium rugged model as a universal winner (Expert Reviews smartwatch guide).
The compromise is charging: the cited 2024 roundup reports an approximately 18-hour manufacturer figure for Series 9, not a controlled result directly comparable with Garmin or Amazfit estimates. Always-on display, GPS, cellular use and usage patterns affect real endurance. It requires an iPhone, so Android users should rule it out rather than shop around for a workaround. Consider Apple Watch Series 10 if you are specifically judging the lineup at the end of 2024: it was announced in September, so it should not be retroactively treated as available throughout the year.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 7: best broad Android smartwatch
Galaxy Watch 7 is a strong starting point for Android owners who want Wear OS apps, Google services, calls, notifications and Samsung integration. Its capabilities make it more of a phone companion than a Garmin sports watch. Galaxy Watch 6 Classic may be worth considering as discounted 2024-era stock, particularly if a rotating bezel appeals; check the exact model’s current support and condition rather than assuming an older watch gets every feature of the newer generation.
It does not pair with iPhone, and some Samsung health features may be limited by phone brand, account or region. Galaxy Watch Ultra is the rugged premium alternative for Android users, but its bulk and price make it unnecessary for ordinary notifications and workouts. As with other mainstream Wear OS watches, expect more frequent charging than on typical Garmin and Amazfit models.
Google Pixel Watch 3: best for Pixel and Fitbit integration
Pixel Watch 3 combines Google apps and Wear OS with Fitbit’s health and safety ecosystem, making it a natural option for Pixel owners who prefer Google services. It is also a viable Android choice for those who value that combination over advanced endurance-sports functions.

- Wheelchair mode tracks pushes — rather than steps — and includes push and handcycle activities with preloaded workouts for strength, cardio, HIIT, Pilates and yoga, challenges specific to wheelchair users and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
It is Android-only. The cited roundup gives an approximately 24-hour manufacturer estimate with always-on display for Pixel Watch 2; do not transfer that figure to Pixel Watch 3 or call it observed endurance. Check the specific 2024 model’s battery claim and test conditions. Buyers prioritizing long GPS outings, rugged navigation or multi-day battery should compare Garmin instead.
Apple Watch Ultra 2: premium rugged pick for iPhone
Ultra 2 is aimed at iPhone users who want a durable, outdoor-oriented watch, a larger display and an Action Button, rather than simply a more expensive Series watch. Tom’s Guide chose it as its 2024 smartwatch award winner, citing features including battery life, durability, display and controls. That is a publication’s award for its stated active-lifestyle perspective, not proof that Ultra 2 is best for every wrist or budget.

It remains an iPhone watch, is large, and costs more than most people need to spend for notifications, everyday fitness and basic safety features. Its battery lasts longer than a standard Apple Watch in the cited editorial framing, but it is not comparable to a multi-day Garmin estimate without matching usage conditions. Android users should consider Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra instead, while recognizing that it too is a bulky premium choice.
Garmin Venu 3/3S: best for fitness-first everyday use
Venu 3 and 3S are strong choices for people who want a broad set of wellness and exercise tools, longer battery life and compatibility with either iPhone or Android. The 3S is the smaller case option, worth considering for smaller wrists or overnight comfort. The trade-off is fewer sophisticated third-party apps and less seamless messaging and phone integration than Apple, Samsung or Google.
The cited roundup describes Venu 3/3S endurance as more than a week under the manufacturer’s stated conditions. That is not a guarantee for always-on display, frequent GPS, music or other high-drain use, and it is not a head-to-head lab comparison. Expert Reviews’ guide names Venu 2 Plus rather than Venu 3 as an everyday pick; model year and editorial selection differ, so treat it as evidence of Garmin’s everyday-watch category, not as a direct Venu 3 test.

Garmin Forerunner, Fenix and Epix: better suited to serious athletes
For runners, cyclists, hikers and multisport athletes, these ranges may be a better purchase than a more phone-centric watch. Choose by the actual features you need: GPS and route navigation, sport profiles, training plans, recovery metrics, external-sensor support, maps and data export. Specifications and capabilities vary considerably by model; do not assume every Forerunner, Fenix or Epix offers the same GPS bands, maps or sensors.

GPS can degrade around tall buildings, trees or steep terrain, and wrist optical heart-rate readings can lag during intervals or strength work. Training scores are not standardized between brands, and calorie totals are estimates—not a reliable measure of exact energy use.
Amazfit GTR 4: value-minded option for a large screen and long claimed battery
GTR 4 combines a large AMOLED screen, GPS, calls and broad sport support, with a cited manufacturer estimate of up to 14 days. That number depends on usage and settings; GPS, calls, notifications and an always-on display can reduce endurance substantially. Its appeal is hardware value and battery, not parity with Apple, Google or Samsung software polish, app selection or long-term support guarantees.
Amazfit supports both iPhone and Android in general, but check the exact device/app compatibility and the functions that matter to you. The dossier does not establish a comparable current price or a verified long-term update period, so do not treat a low sale price as proof of future-proofing.
Fitbit Charge 6: best compact tracker alternative
Choose Charge 6 if you mainly want activity, heart-rate and sleep tracking in a smaller format, rather than a full smartwatch with a broad app platform. It is a useful category alternative for buyers who would otherwise overpay for calls, maps and apps they will not use. Confirm which Fitbit features are available without a paid membership and what data or coaching is included in your region; subscription terms can change.

How to compare battery claims fairly
Battery is often the decisive difference. Apple and mainstream Wear OS watches generally need frequent charging; Garmin and Amazfit models usually last longer. But a seven-to-fourteen-day claim is not directly comparable with another brand’s “all-day” claim: display, GPS, LTE, sleep tracking, music, pulse-ox readings and notification frequency all matter.
Before buying, look for separate figures for normal smartwatch use, always-on display, GPS-only exercise, GPS plus music, LTE and battery-saver mode. Ask whether you can realistically charge when needed. A daily charge may be tolerable if the watch’s apps and integration are the reason you want it; it can be a deal-breaker for sleep tracking, shift work, travel, long races or multi-day hikes. Sleeping in a watch also requires a comfortable fit and a charging routine that does not leave it dead during the day.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Health features: useful signals, not medical equipment
Heart-rate trends can help you notice patterns, and an ECG function can screen for certain signals where supported. Neither makes a watch a clinical ECG or a diagnosis. Blood-oxygen readings are estimates, not a substitute for a medical pulse oximeter; sleep tracking shows trends, not a sleep-disorder diagnosis. Cycle tools are not contraception or medical advice. A fall alert does not guarantee that every fall is detected or that help will reach you.
Feature availability can depend on country, regulatory authorization, software, account, app and paired phone. ECG, blood pressure and oxygen features in particular may be restricted by region or device. Read the relevant manufacturer’s local terms before paying for a sensor you expect to use. Loose fit, movement, tattoos, sweat, cold skin and poor sensor contact can all produce unreliable readings; false positives and false negatives are possible. Smartwatch data should not replace a proper blood-pressure monitor, clinician or emergency service.
Also consider privacy and portability: where health data is stored, whether an account is mandatory, whether data can be exported, and whether anyone else can access it. Apple Health, Fitbit, Garmin Connect and Samsung Health do not preserve identical histories or metrics when you switch platforms. More sensors are not automatically more useful if you will not act on the data.

GPS, controls and LTE: details that change daily use
For sport, compare built-in versus phone-assisted GPS, single- versus multiband GPS where specified, route navigation, downloadable maps, workout structure, heart-rate alerts, external sensors and export to platforms such as Strava or Apple Health. Verify map region and sensor support by model. Optical wrist heart-rate tracking can be less responsive during intervals; a compatible chest strap can be preferable for training precision. No single brand’s recovery or readiness score should be treated as directly comparable with another’s.
Controls matter when running, wearing gloves or dealing with wet fingers. A touchscreen is convenient, but physical buttons, a crown or a rotating bezel can be easier during exercise. The Galaxy Watch 6 Classic’s rotating bezel was praised in the cited ZDNET review material as a practical way to control timers and settings. Screen type also involves a trade-off: AMOLED tends to deliver vivid, high-contrast graphics, while memory-in-pixel screens can favor visibility and power efficiency in some outdoor conditions. Check brightness, always-on behavior and screen size against your actual use and wrist.
GPS-only models are cheaper and generally avoid the extra drain and plan costs of cellular. LTE can allow calls, messages, streaming or emergency connectivity away from a phone, but often requires a compatible carrier and a separate monthly plan. Availability depends on country, carrier, account and watch version; LTE does not make every function independent of the phone. Check carrier compatibility before paying extra.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What “expert tested” means here
There is no single standardized smartwatch test behind the phrase “expert tested.” Expert Reviews says it assesses value, battery, performance, ease of use, third-party apps, notifications, maps, local music and voice assistants; where possible, it compares heart-rate and GPS performance with an ECG chest strap and Stryd wind pod. That is a more concrete account of methodology than a bare ranking, but it does not mean every model in this article was tested under identical conditions.
The recommendations here synthesize published expert selections and disclosed methods, including Expert Reviews, the 2024 award framing from Tom’s Guide, and the surfaced ZDNET roundup mirror. The mirror is not ZDNET’s primary domain, so it is used cautiously for its described model set and warnings, not treated as a primary source. These sources use different review dates and approaches. Their picks are useful evidence, not a controlled cross-brand benchmark or a claim of Watch Ranker hands-on testing.
When reading any review, distinguish long-term daily wear from a short review period, manufacturer specifications from observed endurance, and general impressions from controlled GPS or heart-rate comparisons. “Most accurate” is meaningful only when the reference device, activity and conditions are stated. A review page titled 2024 may also have been updated later, so check its date and product generation before applying its verdict to the 2024 market.
Before you buy: a practical checklist
- Confirm pairing: Check the exact watch and phone models. Do not buy a Wear OS 4-era Samsung or Google watch for an iPhone, or an Apple Watch for Android.
- Check feature restrictions: Verify health features, phone brand requirements, regional availability, carrier support and account requirements in your country.
- Decide your category: A tracker may be enough for steps and sleep; a sports watch may be better for training and navigation; a full smartwatch is the stronger phone companion.
- Price the whole ownership period: Include LTE plan, optional coaching or health-analysis subscription, bands, charger, protection, repair and eventual battery replacement—not just the watch price.
- Check comfort: Case size and weight matter, especially for small wrists and sleep tracking. A larger case can mean a bigger display and battery but may feel heavy overnight.
- If buying older, used or refurbished: Verify software-support status, battery condition, included proprietary charger, return policy and that the watch has been removed from the prior owner’s account.
- Think about switching later: Changing from iPhone to Android may require replacing an Apple Watch; changing watch brands can mean lost history, different metrics or duplicate health accounts.
