The best smartwatch depends first on your phone: Apple Watch works only with iPhone, while Android users can choose among Google, Samsung and fitness-focused brands. As of August 18, 2026, the Apple Watch Series 11 is the strongest everyday choice for most iPhone owners; the SE 3 is the better-value Apple pick, and Garmin is a better fit when training and battery life matter more than apps. For Android, consider the Pixel Watch 4 or Galaxy Watch 8, depending on your phone and priorities.
This guide reflects U.S. list prices and availability on August 18, 2026. Google’s Pixel Watch 5 had been reported as announced, with retail availability scheduled for August 20, so it is not treated as an available-now recommendation.

Check your phone before comparing features
- iPhone: Choose an Apple Watch. Apple says current SE 3, Series 11 and Ultra 3 models require iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later. They do not pair with Android. Check Apple’s compatibility details.
- Samsung Galaxy phone: Galaxy Watch 8 models are the most integrated Android option here. Samsung identifies features such as dual-band GPS, LTE, body-composition analysis and irregular-heart-rhythm notifications on applicable models; availability depends on model and phone.
- Pixel or another Android phone: Compare Pixel Watch 4, Galaxy Watch 8 and OnePlus Watch 3. “Works with Android” does not guarantee every health function, payment feature or carrier option will work on every device.
- Training or outdoor use comes first: Consider Garmin, COROS or Suunto even if you use an iPhone. Their fitness-first strengths may outweigh a conventional smartwatch’s larger app and messaging ecosystem.
LTE is a separate compatibility check: confirm that your carrier supports the watch and the required number-sharing or watch plan before paying extra for cellular hardware. Feature availability can also vary by country, software, carrier and regulatory approval.

Best smartwatches for iPhone owners
Best for most people: Apple Watch Series 11
Series 11 is the balanced pick if you want Apple’s everyday combination of notifications, apps, health tools and safety features without the Ultra’s size and price. It starts at $399 in the U.S. and comes in 42 mm and 46 mm sizes. Apple lists ECG, hypertension notifications, sleep-apnea notifications, temperature sensing, fall and crash detection, GPS, optional cellular and 5G capability. Its stated battery life is up to 24 hours, or up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode; Apple says fast charging can reach 80% in about 30 minutes under specified conditions. See Apple’s Series 11 buying information.
Choose something else if you use Android, want multi-day GPS outings without charging, or would rather spend less and can do without its additional health features.
Best value: Apple Watch SE 3
SE 3 starts at $249 for 40 mm GPS, $279 for 44 mm GPS and $299 for GPS + Cellular in the U.S. Apple lists an Always-On display, sleep tracking, sleep-apnea notifications, temperature sensing, fall and crash detection, Emergency SOS and an S10 chip. The stated battery claim is up to 18 hours, or up to 32 hours in Low Power Mode. It is a sensible first Apple Watch for everyday notifications, safety features and fitness tracking, but it lacks ECG and hypertension notifications listed for higher-end models. Check current SE 3 configurations.

Skip it if ECG, the additional health features, premium materials or more outdoor-focused hardware are priorities.
Best premium and outdoor Apple option: Apple Watch Ultra 3
Ultra 3 is aimed at iPhone owners who will use its rugged hardware, not simply those who want the most expensive Apple Watch. The U.S. starting price is $799. Its 49 mm titanium case, display brightness up to 3,000 nits, precision dual-frequency GPS, satellite Emergency SOS, 100 m water resistance and depth gauge to 40 m make it the most outdoor-oriented Apple option in this lineup. Apple’s battery claim is up to 42 hours, or up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode. Apple’s Ultra 3 technical information has model details.
Its size and price are hard to justify for routine notifications and casual workouts. Water resistance ratings are not a promise that every kind of water activity is safe; follow Apple’s activity and depth guidance.

Best Android smartwatch options
Best Google-oriented choice: Google Pixel Watch 4
Pixel Watch 4 is the buy-now candidate for Android users who want Google software, Fitbit health integration and a clean Wear OS experience, particularly with a Pixel phone. It is a weaker match for people who prioritize long battery life, rugged construction or extensive training and navigation tools. Current coverage has positioned it among the leading Android choices, including Tom’s Guide’s smartwatch guide and TechRadar’s smartwatch recommendations.

If you can wait, compare its confirmed availability, price and independent testing after that date rather than assuming it is already on sale. Android Central’s report gives the stated timing.
Best for Samsung Galaxy owners: Galaxy Watch 8
Galaxy Watch 8 is the straightforward Samsung choice for Galaxy users who want Wear OS apps, Samsung Health integration and a conventional round watch. The June 2026 U.S. MSRP sheet lists Bluetooth models at $349.99 for 40 mm and $379.99 for 44 mm; LTE versions are $399.99–$429.99. Samsung’s comparison page identifies dual-band L1/L5 GPS, LTE, BIA and irregular-heart-rhythm notifications on applicable models. Check whether a health feature requires a Samsung phone before buying if you use another Android brand. Samsung’s model comparison covers model differences.
Choose another watch if you need longer endurance or want health features that are less dependent on a Samsung phone.
Best classic design: Galaxy Watch 8 Classic
The Classic adds a physical rotating bezel and more traditional styling. Samsung’s June 2026 U.S. MSRP is $499.99 for Bluetooth and $549.99 for LTE. It makes sense if the bezel and design matter to you; it is a more expensive, heavier route than the standard Watch 8 for otherwise similar day-to-day smartwatch needs. Confirm the size, weight and phone-specific feature support on Samsung’s comparison page.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Ultra is the rugged Android alternative for buyers who want LTE and outdoor-oriented features in Samsung’s ecosystem. Its June 2026 U.S. MSRP is $649.99. It is large, and buyers who do not need rugged construction or outdoor tools are likely better served by a standard Watch 8 or a fitness-first watch. Best fitness and outdoor watches
Best all-round fitness-first pick: Garmin Venu 4
Garmin Venu 4 is the better direction when workout tracking, training data, recovery and battery life matter more than a large app catalog or rich messaging. Current recommendations include Tech Advisor’s smartwatch guide and Tom’s Guide. Exact price, battery life and feature availability are not established here, so compare the current model and your phone pairing before purchase.
For serious running, hiking and endurance
Look at Garmin Forerunner or Fenix models, COROS and Suunto when you need deeper training and navigation workflows than a mainstream smartwatch typically offers. These brands make more sense for long runs, route-following and multi-day outdoor use; their trade-off is generally a less capable app, voice-assistant and communication experience. For a broader comparison of alternatives, see Stuff’s smartwatch guide and TechRadar.
Value and lower-cost alternatives
- OnePlus Watch 3: Consider it if you want Wear OS functions with a stronger battery-value proposition than flagship rivals. Exact runtime and price depend on the current model and conditions; verify before comparing.
- Amazfit Active: A lower-cost, longer-battery alternative for basic activity tracking and notifications, with less app breadth and third-party support.
- CMF Watch Pro: A basic budget tracker for notifications and fitness rather than a full replacement for Apple Watch or Wear OS.
- Huawei Watch: Hardware and health features can be compelling in some markets, but app, payment and regional compatibility need particular care.
These alternatives are not interchangeable. Compare the companion app, payments, messages, maps and phone compatibility you will actually use. TechRadar’s current guide also surveys brands beyond Apple, Google and Samsung.

Choose by what you will do with the watch
- Running: For casual runs and phone notifications, an Apple or Wear OS watch may be enough. For structured training, longer GPS sessions and recovery metrics, start with Garmin, COROS or Suunto.
- Hiking and navigation: Prioritize offline maps or route guidance, GPS performance, altimeter, compass, physical controls and battery during GPS use. Do not assume a watch has maps or that they work without downloads or a paid service.
- Swimming: Check the specific model’s water rating and permitted activities. “Water resistant” does not mean waterproof, and depth, saltwater, hot tubs and high-speed water use can have different limits.
- Sleep: Comfort and charging schedule matter as much as sleep metrics. A watch that needs charging overnight cannot track that night; a bulky case may also be uncomfortable to sleep in.
- Safety and emergency contact: Fall detection, crash detection, SOS and satellite messaging differ by model, country and connectivity. Satellite emergency services are not a substitute for ordinary coverage and may require open sky.
- Calls without a phone: Look for LTE, then verify carrier support, service charges, coverage and number-sharing setup. GPS-only watches generally rely on a nearby phone for connected functions.
- Small wrists: Compare case diameter, thickness and weight in person if possible. A 49 mm rugged watch can be unwieldy and less comfortable for sleep, even when its features are attractive.
- Children or family setup: Apple Watch SE 3 can be a family-oriented option, but check current family setup requirements and cellular carrier support before relying on it as a child’s phone substitute.
- Older adults: Prioritize readable screen size, simple controls, emergency setup and a charging routine the wearer can maintain; do not treat watch alerts as a medical diagnosis.
Smartwatch or fitness watch: which category fits?
A conventional smartwatch is strongest when you want notifications, quick replies, calls, assistants, payments, music and third-party apps tightly integrated with your phone. Apple Watch and Wear OS models generally lead on those interactions.
A fitness watch is built around training and time away from a charger: longer endurance, workout customization, recovery and training-load tools, buttons that work with gloves, and GPS workflows suited to long sessions. Garmin, COROS and Suunto are typical choices. A runner or backpacker may be better served by one of these even if it is less capable for messaging.

| Apple model | Normal-use claim | Low Power Mode claim |
|---|---|---|
| SE 3 | Up to 18 hours | Up to 32 hours |
| Series 11 | Up to 24 hours | Up to 38 hours |
| Ultra 3 | Up to 42 hours | Up to 72 hours |
These claims are listed by Apple for its current models at Apple’s buying and comparison page. In practical terms, SE 3 and Series 11 are daily-charge choices for many users; Wear OS endurance varies by model and settings; Garmin, Amazfit and some OnePlus watches are more appealing when charging every day is unwelcome. For repeated multi-day GPS trips, assess dedicated outdoor models and their GPS-mode figures rather than normal-use claims.
Before buying, ask whether your watch can cover a full day plus the workout and overnight sleep tracking you need. Also check charge time, whether a travel spare is available and whether LTE or long GPS sessions will leave enough battery for the return trip. Do not assume an advertised multi-day figure applies with every feature enabled.
Health features: useful signals, not diagnoses
Heart-rate tracking, ECG, irregular-rhythm notifications, blood oxygen, hypertension-related notifications, sleep tracking, sleep-apnea notifications, temperature sensing and menstrual-cycle features are different tools; no single label such as “health tracking” tells you which are present. Apple lists ECG, hypertension notifications, sleep-apnea notifications, temperature sensing and safety features on applicable current models, with differences between SE 3 and the higher-end lineup. Samsung also lists features such as BIA and irregular-heart-rhythm notifications on applicable models. Availability can vary by model, phone, country, software and regulatory authorization.
- A possible irregular-rhythm notification is not a confirmed diagnosis.
- A blood-pressure trend or estimate is not a substitute for a validated cuff reading.
- Sleep-stage estimates are not the same as a clinical sleep study.
- Readiness and recovery scores from different manufacturers are not directly comparable.
- Optical sensor readings can be affected by fit, skin contact, movement, temperature and workout type.
Health features are wellness or screening tools unless specifically authorized otherwise. They should not replace a clinician, diagnostic test or emergency service. Review the model’s regional feature availability before paying for a capability that may not be enabled where you live.
LTE, subscriptions and the real ownership cost
Cellular hardware is only the first cost. An LTE watch may require an additional monthly carrier plan, compatible service and a number-sharing arrangement; it can also use more battery and still have limited coverage or roaming. LTE is useful for a run without a phone, reachable errands, music streaming or family setup. If your phone is almost always with you, GPS-only is usually the simpler value.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Do not assume every health metric requires a subscription: check the precise feature and plan for that model. Compare recurring service costs separately from the U.S. list prices in this guide.
What not to overpay for
- Rugged Ultra casing: Pay for it if you need the larger, brighter outdoor display, navigation or emergency hardware; otherwise a standard model is less costly and easier to wear.
- LTE: Skip it if you do not expect to leave your phone behind or your carrier does not support the watch.
- Advanced health sensors: Confirm the feature is available in your country and works with your phone before using it to decide between models.
- Premium materials: Titanium or sapphire may suit harder use, but do not add value if an aluminum model meets your needs.
- Subscriptions: Pay only for a service whose maps, coaching or analytics you will actually use. A useful base watch should not be confused with optional extras.
- Discounted older generations: A prior model can be better value if it has the sensors and compatibility you need, but check whether it is still supported and whether its battery or condition justifies the discount.
How to make the final choice
- Set the phone-platform gate. iPhone owners should shortlist Apple Watch; Android owners should compare Pixel, Samsung or another compatible model. Confirm the minimum OS and phone requirements.
- Name your primary job. Pick communication and apps, health and safety, daily fitness, serious training, or outdoor navigation. Do not pay for a specialist feature you will not use.
- Set your charging tolerance. If daily charging is unacceptable, favor fitness-first or longer-endurance models and scrutinize GPS and LTE modes.
- Check fit and controls. Compare case size, weight, buttons, crown or bezel, screen visibility and band options against your wrist and daily routine.
- Price the whole setup. Add any carrier plan, subscription, accessories and charging gear to the upfront price.
- Verify regional features and support. Check the exact SKU, carrier, app, health authorizations and service availability in your market before ordering.
Verdict by buyer
For most iPhone owners, start with Series 11; choose SE 3 to save money, or Ultra 3 when its outdoor hardware and emergency features solve a real need. Android buyers should choose Pixel Watch 4 for Google integration or Galaxy Watch 8 for Samsung integration and model choice. If workouts, battery life and outdoor use outrank apps and messaging, look first at Garmin, COROS or Suunto.
