The Breitling Exospace B55 Connected is best understood as a large analog-digital aviation chronograph with a useful, deliberately limited Bluetooth layer—not as a smartwatch. Its phone connection can simplify setup, synchronize time and retrieve stored timing data; the watch itself handles its core timekeeping and chronograph functions. That division makes the B55 unusually compelling for aviation-watch enthusiasts, but also leaves a 2026 ownership question its original launch reviews could not answer: whether the legacy Exospace app still works reliably with current phones.
What the B55 Connected actually does
The B55 is a Swiss-made quartz watch in Breitling’s Professional line, continuing the brand’s Aerospace-style analog-digital approach. It pairs conventional hands with two LCD windows, physical controls and a specialized set of timing functions. Bluetooth adds remote configuration, synchronization, data transfer and basic phone alerts.
The relationship is the reverse of a conventional smartwatch: the phone serves the watch, rather than the watch trying to replace the phone. There is no touchscreen, app ecosystem, fitness or sleep tracking, GPS navigation, music, voice assistant or full-message interface in the documented feature set. The watch is intended to remain useful when it is not connected to a phone.
Launch-era coverage sometimes called it Breitling’s “first smartwatch.” Today, “connected analog-digital aviation chronograph” is the more informative description. Breitling’s product page and contemporary hands-on coverage make clear that connectivity supplements a purpose-built watch; it does not turn it into a general-purpose digital device.

Size, materials and wrist presence
For the standard references documented by Breitling, the case measures 46 mm across and 15.25 mm thick. Depending on reference, it is titanium or DLC-coated titanium. The watch has a double-sided glare-proofed sapphire crystal, a bidirectional ratcheted bezel, 24 mm lugs and 100 m (10 bar) water resistance. Strap choices vary by reference and market, including rubber, fabric and metal bracelet configurations; the B55 should not be treated as one unchanging specification or finish.
Those dimensions make it a substantial watch. Titanium helps keep the weight down, but it does not reduce the visual footprint: the broad case, digital displays and aviation styling remain conspicuous, while the thickness can catch under shirt cuffs or a jacket. A contemporary Hodinkee hands-on found the watch more comfortable than its size suggested, crediting its lightweight titanium, curved-down lugs and strap. That is one wearer’s experience, not a guarantee of fit. Buyers with smaller wrists, a preference for discreet watches or tight cuffs should try the exact reference on before committing.
Some black-coated versions give the watch a more tactical appearance; blue rubber straps on certain references reinforce its sporty character. Neither treatment makes the watch visually subtle. The 100 m rating is a specification, not a promise that a used or long-stored example is safe to immerse: condition and seals matter, so have a pre-owned watch pressure-tested before swimming with it.

Two LCDs, physical controls and a learning curve
The B55’s interface combines analog hands, two LCD windows, a crown with an integrated push function and separate pushers. The controls navigate the watch’s modes and activate their functions; they are not a touchscreen substitute. There is a learning curve because the wearer must coordinate two displays, physical inputs and aviation-oriented timekeeping logic.
The hands can be moved out of the way—effectively parked—to make digital information easier to read. The digital screens provide information without requiring a phone, but their small size necessarily limits how much they show at once. That is also why the notification feature is intentionally spare rather than a miniature copy of a phone interface.

For lighting, the watch provides backlighting activated through the crown; some configurations allow wrist-tilt activation. A contemporary reviewer found tilt lighting useful but noted that it could switch on unintentionally in dark surroundings. Daylight legibility, night readability and information density are separate considerations here: the LCDs can be handy for time and timing data, but they are not designed to display long text. The exact lighting behavior and settings can depend on configuration.
Timekeeping centers on local and home time, with UTC/GMT important to its aviation-oriented setup. Breitling’s product descriptions and hands-on reports describe time-zone handling that can use airport codes, and the connected setup can synchronize analog hands with the digital indications. A phone can make that configuration more convenient; it is not required for the watch’s basic timekeeping.
Aviation timing functions: the reason to consider it
The B55’s strongest case is its unusually rich set of timing tools. Breitling lists an electronic tachymeter, countdown/count-up timing, Chrono Flight and a 1/100-second chronograph with lap timing and flyback. The documented chronograph range is up to 99 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds. Chrono Regatta is associated with relevant yachting variants, not every B55.
Contemporary hands-on reporting adds operational details: storage for up to 50 intermediate lap times, a countdown timer settable to 100 hours, up to seven daily alarms, and flight start/end records associated with airport codes. Alerts can be set to sound, vibrate or use both. These operating limits come from launch-era review material; buyers should check the manual for the exact reference rather than assume every variant behaves identically.
Chrono Flight and the ability to record departure and arrival information are more distinctive than the notification feature. Whether they are practical professional tools depends on the wearer’s actual workflow. A pilot may value quick access to UTC, elapsed time and flight records; another owner may use the countdown, alarm and chronograph far more often. Many buyers will never use the tachymeter or flight-log functions in professional aviation. Their value is therefore partly functional and partly the pleasure of owning specialized instrumentation.

Breitling presents the B55 as aviation-focused, and product material for at least some references describes backlighting as compatible with night-vision goggles. That is a product-design claim, not proof of approval for every cockpit, aircraft, military organization or night-vision system. The available reporting does not establish independent cockpit testing or universal operational certification. Pilots considering it for work should assess display readability, alerts, wrist clearance and their employer’s or aircraft operator’s requirements rather than infer suitability from the aviation styling.
What the Exospace app adds
The companion app was meant to make complex setup faster on a phone. Reported functions include setting and synchronizing the time, configuring local, home and UTC time, swapping time zones, setting alarms, adjusting display and backlight behavior, setting wrist-tilt sensitivity, selecting notification behavior, and reviewing stored flight, chronograph, timer and notification data. The watch can operate on its own and synchronize stored information later.
Breitling’s connection manual documents the original pairing process: install the Exospace app, enable Bluetooth in the watch’s connection setting and on the phone, open the app, select the watch identified as “BREITLING B55” and its serial number, then enter the six-digit code shown on the watch. The manual says a phone connects to one watch at a time; a watch can be associated with multiple phones, but not connected to them simultaneously.
Important for buyers in 2026: that manual lists launch-era minimum requirements—iPhone 4S with iOS 7 and Android 4.4 with Bluetooth Low Energy. Those historical requirements explain the original system; they do not establish that the app, pairing process, notifications or data review remain compatible with current iOS or Android versions. Current compatibility has not been verified here, so do not buy on the assumption that a modern phone will pair or that every connected feature will work.
If the app becomes unavailable or incompatible, the watch may still tell time and run its onboard functions, while phone-assisted configuration, synchronized data review and notifications may be lost. In that sense, the B55 is less dependent on software than a watch that cannot function without a phone, but its “Connected” proposition is still vulnerable to app and operating-system changes.

Notifications: awareness, not message reading
The B55 can relay basic alerts for incoming calls, calendar events and text messages. The LCD gives an abbreviated indication—for example, “CALL” or “MESSAGE”—rather than a full email or message preview. It tells you something happened; you still need the phone to see the details.
That can be useful if the goal is to notice an incoming alert without constantly checking a screen. It is not a substitute for the richer notification controls and readable previews of a modern smartwatch. Even when original pairing is successful, alerts can depend on Bluetooth, phone notification permissions, background-app behavior and the operating system. A changed phone or disabled permission may interrupt alerts; the historical manual does not provide a current troubleshooting path for modern devices.
Battery life, charging and long-term ownership
The B55 has a rechargeable battery, a charge-level indicator and a proprietary magnetic charging cable that connects at the side of the case. Contemporary launch-era reports put endurance at roughly one to two months per charge, depending particularly on Bluetooth and backlight use. One reviewer reported more than 60 percent remaining after roughly two weeks of regular use, but that is an individual result, not a standardized guarantee. Breitling’s product summary confirms a battery indicator; the material cited here does not establish a current standardized battery-life promise.
Even with those qualifications, the reported endurance is a major contrast with daily-charged smartwatches: ordinary use need not mean plugging in every night. The costs are ownership-related. The cable is proprietary and easy to misplace; the rechargeable cell ages; and long endurance does not protect the connected features from app obsolescence. On a pre-owned example, battery condition may be very different from a launch-era test. Ask whether the charger is included and working, whether the seller can demonstrate charging and pairing, and what service or battery work has been done. The available sources do not establish battery replacement procedure, cost or service life, so confirm those points with Breitling or an authorized service provider for the relevant market.
Movement and accuracy
The watch uses Breitling’s B55 Manufacture thermocompensated SuperQuartz caliber, with analog hands and digital display functions. “Thermocompensated quartz” is the useful description: the movement is designed to account for temperature-related effects on quartz timekeeping. Contemporary Hodinkee coverage describes it as COSC-tested as a quartz chronometer and cites the COSC quartz standard of about ±0.07 seconds per day. Treat that figure as attributed review information, not a verified guarantee for every reference or current individual watch.

Phone synchronization can align the displayed time with a phone’s time source, but the B55 does not contain an atomic clock, GPS receiver or radio time signal. Calling it “atomic-accurate” would confuse synchronization with the watch’s own timekeeping technology.

Breitling’s regional catalogs continue to list B55 references, but a listing is not confirmation that a particular model is in stock. Prices vary with region, taxes, reference and configuration; they should not be collapsed into a single worldwide “current price.” Examples shown in the research material include:

Its value depends on which kind of value matters to you. Functionally, a full smartwatch will generally be the more capable choice for health tracking, GPS, maps, payments, music, apps and detailed notifications. The B55 asks a different question: do you want a Breitling aviation chronograph with SuperQuartz timing functions, titanium construction on some references, traditional hands, long reported battery endurance and a restrained connection to a phone?
- It makes sense for: aviation-minded enthusiasts who will use UTC, countdown, chronograph or flight functions; owners who want an analog-digital Breitling and appreciate its specific instrumentation; and buyers who want basic alerts without making a bright touchscreen the center of the watch.
- It is a poor fit for: anyone seeking health or fitness features, GPS, maps, music, payments, full text previews, a compact case, standard charging, or guaranteed future phone compatibility. It is also a poor choice if smartwatch functionality per dollar is the main measure.
The B55’s luxury pricing is not explained by broad digital utility. It reflects the Breitling product, materials and finishing, the B55 caliber and the specialized aviation feature set. A professional pilot may attach practical value to some of those functions; a collector may value the unusual SuperQuartz instrument; a buyer seeking only notifications is unlikely to find the proposition persuasive. Alternatives in aviation watches require their own current reference-by-reference research, so there is no responsible universal comparison or substitute price to offer here.
Pre-owned buyer checklist
Before buying a used or old-stock B55, verify more than appearance:
- Confirm the exact reference and whether it is titanium, DLC-coated, on rubber, fabric or bracelet.
- Ask for the proprietary magnetic charger and confirm that it charges the watch.
- Check battery endurance and service history; an aged rechargeable cell may not match launch-era reports.
- If connectivity matters, have the seller demonstrate pairing and the specific app functions on a phone you intend to use. A demonstration on a different or older device does not prove current compatibility.
- Inspect the coating, crystal, controls, crown and strap or bracelet for wear or damage.
- For any water use, request a current pressure test rather than relying solely on the original 100 m rating.
- Confirm warranty region, service availability and any proposed battery work with the seller or Breitling.
Verdict
The Exospace B55 Connected remains an intriguing watch because its strongest qualities are on the watch, not in the phone: a distinctive analog-digital display, thermocompensated SuperQuartz, extensive timing tools and an aviation-first identity. Its Bluetooth layer is useful when it works, but the small-screen alerts are basic and the app’s present-day compatibility is the biggest unresolved ownership risk. The B55 is not a smartwatch replacement. It is a specialized, oversized Breitling instrument for a narrow audience willing to pay for the watch itself—and to verify the software, battery and service situation before buying.
