Some older Samsung watches can connect to an iPhone, but Galaxy Watch4 and newer models cannot. The practical cutoff is Galaxy Watch3 and older: those models may pair through Samsung’s iOS app, while newer Wear OS watches require Android services that iOS does not support. Check the exact model before buying or troubleshooting.
Which Samsung watches work with iPhone?
Samsung’s compatibility guidance distinguishes its older watches from its Wear OS generation. The table below summarizes the main Galaxy Watch lines. Legacy support can vary by region and app availability, so verify the precise model and current App Store listing before buying a used watch.
| Watch | iPhone pairing | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch (2018) | Yes, listed by Samsung | Samsung lists iPhone 5 or later with iOS 9 or later as the minimum for this legacy generation. |
| Galaxy Watch Active | Yes, listed by Samsung | Older Tizen-era model; expect fewer features than with a compatible Android phone. |
| Galaxy Watch Active2 | Yes, listed by Samsung | Some health and companion features may be limited. |
| Galaxy Watch3 | Yes, in Samsung regional support information | Check the current app and service support in your region before purchasing. |
| Galaxy Watch4 / Watch4 Classic | No | Wear OS model; iPhone setup is unsupported. |
| Galaxy Watch5 / Watch5 Pro | No | Wear OS model; cannot be set up with iOS. |
| Galaxy Watch6 / Watch6 Classic | No | Wear OS model; iOS is unsupported. |
| Galaxy Watch FE | No | Not compatible with iOS. |
| Galaxy Watch7 | No | Not compatible with iOS. |
| Galaxy Watch Ultra | No | Not compatible with iOS. |
| Galaxy Watch8 / Watch8 Classic | No | Samsung’s current regional compatibility information classifies the Watch8 line as iOS-incompatible. |
Samsung lists some older Gear models as compatible and others as not. Gear Live, Gear S2, Gear S3, Gear Sport, and some Gear Fit devices appear among compatible models in Samsung documentation; earlier Gear, Gear 2, Gear S, and Gear Fit models do not. Because regional lists and app support differ, look up the exact model rather than relying on the Gear name alone. See Samsung’s compatibility list and its regional model guidance.

The older iPhone-compatible Galaxy Watches use Samsung’s earlier platform and companion apps. Starting with Galaxy Watch4, Samsung moved to Wear OS, with Google services integrated into the watch experience. Samsung says Wear OS Galaxy Watches are not compatible with iOS because they rely on Google Play services, which iOS does not support. Normal setup and management also depend on the Galaxy Wearable ecosystem and a compatible Android phone with Google Mobile Services. See Samsung’s explanations of Wear OS iOS compatibility and setup requirements.

This is not simply a Bluetooth-discovery problem. An iPhone might detect a nearby watch over Bluetooth, but that does not supply the supported setup, apps, account synchronization, updates, or companion features the newer watch requires.
How to pair an older compatible Galaxy Watch
- Confirm the exact model. Check the model name or model number on the watch and verify it against Samsung’s current compatibility information. If it is a Watch4 or newer, stop here: it cannot be paired with iPhone.
- Update the iPhone as far as its hardware allows. Samsung lists iPhone 5 or later with iOS 9 or later for certain older Galaxy Watch models, but that is a legacy minimum, not a recommendation to buy or rely on an obsolete phone.
- Install the right Samsung app. Use the App Store to find the companion app specified for that watch. Samsung identifies the Galaxy Watch app for compatible Galaxy Watch models and a Galaxy Fit app for compatible Fit devices; confirm current availability for your model and region.
- Open the app and start setup. Samsung’s published path is to open the app, tap START THE JOURNEY, select the watch, and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Approve relevant permissions. Allow Bluetooth and, as needed, notifications, health access, and other permissions for the features you want. Sign in to a Samsung account if prompted.
- Check for updates and test the features you need. After pairing, look in the app for any available firmware update. Test notifications, calls, and health-data sharing rather than assuming every Android feature is available.
Samsung’s setup instructions for older Galaxy Watches describe this app-led process. The wording and available app can vary with the watch model and region.

What works—and what may be missing
A compatible older watch may provide basic notifications, activity and exercise tracking, watch-face management, some health or sleep information, and selected music-control or call features. The exact mix depends on the watch, iPhone, region, app, and software version. Pairing does not mean feature parity with Android.
- Notifications and messages: Notifications may appear, but reply options and interaction can be limited. Do not assume full iMessage, call, or notification control.
- Apps and services: App selection and third-party services may be reduced, and Samsung-specific services can have phone or regional requirements.
- Health data: Tracking and data sharing vary by model and app. ECG, blood pressure, and other advanced functions may require a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone, particular software, and regional approval. Samsung Health does not replace Galaxy Wearable for setup, and Samsung Health Monitor has stricter requirements. See Samsung’s health-feature requirements.
- Samsung Pay or Wallet: Availability can depend on the watch, phone, and region; Samsung says some features are limited on non-Samsung phones.
- Updates and ongoing support: An older model may pair but still have aging hardware, battery wear, reduced app availability, or limited software support. Check the current app listing and the seller’s return policy.
Samsung cautions that compatibility and feature support can vary by region, carrier, and model. Its UK guidance also flags possible instability for connections involving iPhone 6s and 6s Plus on iOS 10 or later; treat that as a specific legacy warning, not a universal requirement for every compatible watch. See Samsung UK’s compatibility notes.

Health measurements are not a substitute for medical advice. Samsung says the relevant health software functions are not intended to diagnose disease or prevent, treat, or cure medical conditions.
Does LTE or standalone mode make a newer Galaxy Watch work with iPhone?
No. LTE and iPhone compatibility are separate questions. Cellular service can let some watches perform selected tasks without a phone nearby, but it does not make an iPhone an approved setup device for an incompatible Wear OS watch. Samsung describes limited phone-free setup circumstances for selected LTE models, while other models require a compatible Android phone. Activation, account configuration, updates, and advanced features may still depend on supported Android or Galaxy hardware.

Borrowing an Android phone to activate a Watch4-or-newer model is not a dependable workaround for using it as an iPhone companion. Likewise, installing Samsung Health on iPhone does not provide the Galaxy Wearable setup framework those models need. Avoid unofficial Bluetooth workarounds or modified software: even a partial connection would not create supported access to setup, notifications, apps, updates, and synchronized health features.
Troubleshooting: check the model before resetting anything
The watch does not appear in the iPhone app
- Confirm the exact generation and model number.
- Check Samsung’s compatibility list for your region and make sure you installed the companion app for that model.
- For a supported older watch, check that Bluetooth and the app’s required permissions are enabled, then restart both devices.
- If the watch was previously paired to another phone, follow the model’s supported disconnect or reset steps. Back up anything important first; do not reset until you have confirmed iPhone compatibility.
If the watch is a Galaxy Watch4 or newer, repeated Bluetooth troubleshooting will not help. The model is unsupported on iOS.

It pairs, but notifications do not arrive
Check iPhone notification permissions, Bluetooth status, Focus modes, background-app permissions, and whether the Samsung companion app is allowed to run. Make sure the notification type is supported on that watch and that it is not connected to another phone. Even after these checks, notification interaction may be limited on an older model.
Health data is missing
Data availability depends on the watch, app, account, region, and phone platform. Advanced Samsung health functions may require a Galaxy phone, and data may not transfer or display on iPhone as it does on Android.
What should iPhone users buy instead?
- For the smoothest iPhone integration: Choose an Apple Watch. Apple says Apple Watch is compatible only with iPhone; check the current setup requirements for the model you want.
- For fitness features or longer battery life: Consider Garmin, Fitbit, Amazfit, or another cross-platform watch only after verifying that the specific model’s current app supports iOS and that the functions you need work with iPhone. Support varies by model; do not infer it from a brand name.
- If you already own a Watch4 or newer: Use it with a compatible Android phone, return or resell it, or exchange it for a watch designed to work with iPhone. An LTE plan, factory reset, or different iPhone will not fix the incompatibility.
- If you are considering a used Galaxy Watch3: Confirm the correct iOS app is still available in your region, check which features matter to you, inspect battery condition, and buy only with an acceptable return option.
In the U.S., Apple’s shopping page lists Apple Watch SE 3 from $249, Series 11 from $399, and Ultra 3 from $799; those are starting prices and can change. They are options for different budgets and use cases, not a claim that every buyer needs a premium model. See Apple’s current Watch lineup.

- iPhone + Galaxy Watch3 or older: Potentially compatible. Verify the exact watch, app availability, and feature limitations.
- iPhone + Galaxy Watch4 or newer: Not compatible. Do not buy it expecting iPhone pairing, even if it is discounted or labeled LTE.
- Android phone + newer Galaxy Watch: Check Samsung’s requirements for the specific watch and phone, including Google Mobile Services.
For a new iPhone purchase, the generation cutoff matters more than price: a cheap newer Galaxy Watch is still not an iPhone-compatible watch.
