Yes—many Garmin watches and other Garmin devices can be updated without a computer, using Garmin Connect on a phone or a device’s built-in Wi-Fi. Whether that works depends on the exact model and whether you mean a software update or a map update. Some older devices and certain first-time or map updates still need Garmin Express on a Windows or Mac computer.
For a compatible Garmin watch, start by pairing it with Garmin Connect, syncing, and waiting for an update prompt on the watch. For a Wi-Fi-capable model, you can also connect it to a supported network. Check your model’s manual or Garmin Support before relying on a particular method: update options and menu names vary.
First, identify what you want to update
“Updating a Garmin” can mean several different things:
- Device software (firmware): The Garmin’s operating software, which may receive bug fixes, performance improvements, or features.
- Maps: Road, address, or point-of-interest data, mainly relevant to automotive navigators and devices with onboard maps. A software update does not necessarily update maps.
- Garmin Connect: Updating the phone app does not, by itself, install an update on the Garmin device.
- Activities, routes, or courses: Syncing this data is not the same as installing device software.
Garmin lists Garmin Connect, Wi-Fi, and Garmin Express as distinct software-update methods for supported Edge devices. The options for a watch or another Garmin family can differ; use the support page for your exact model rather than assuming one method works across the product range.

Which Garmin devices can update without a computer?

Garmin says to check the owner’s manual for your model’s Wi-Fi and update capabilities. The model name is usually shown in the device’s About or System menu, on its packaging, or in Garmin Connect under More → Garmin Devices.
Update a compatible Garmin through Garmin Connect
This is the simplest computer-free option for many watches and Edge devices, and some supported handhelds. You need Garmin Connect on a compatible smartphone, an internet connection, Bluetooth enabled, and the Garmin paired with the app. Charge the Garmin before starting; for a lengthy update, keeping it connected to its charger is the safer choice.
- Open Garmin Connect and check More → Garmin Devices to make sure your device appears.
- Confirm the phone and Garmin are paired, then sync. Keep them near each other and let Garmin Connect complete its transfer.
- Leave Garmin Connect available to sync in the background. On some supported devices, the update downloads automatically rather than appearing as a manual “Check for Updates” control.
- When the Garmin displays an installation prompt, choose the offered option, such as Install Now or Install Tonight, if available.
- Follow the Garmin’s instructions. Keep it powered on and do not interrupt installation; it may restart.
- After it returns to its normal screen, sync again and check its Software Update, System, or About menu for the installed version. The exact menu name varies by model.
Do not expect every Connect sync to trigger an immediate installation. Garmin says some Connect-delivered updates may take up to about a week to download before the device prompts you to install them. That timing applies to the cited Edge guidance, not as a guarantee for every Garmin model. See Garmin’s Edge software-update guidance.

Update over Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi can be useful when your Garmin supports it, especially if you want to update without keeping a phone nearby. Setup and update controls are model-specific. On supported watches and Edge devices, Garmin Connect’s documented setup route is:
Garmin Connect → More → Garmin Devices → select your device → General or Connectivity → Wi-Fi Networks or Wi-Fi → My Networks → Add a Network
Some models use System in place of General or Connectivity, or let you add a network directly on the device. Once the network is saved, put the Garmin in range, sync or follow its update prompt, and leave it connected long enough to finish downloading and installing.

Garmin’s cited Wi-Fi guidance for supported watches and Edge devices specifies 2.4 GHz networks, channels 1–11, visible network names, and open, WPA, or WPA2 security. Hidden networks and a 5 GHz-only setup may not work with those devices. Garmin documents saved-network limits of up to seven for watches and 12 for Edge cycling computers in that guidance; these limits should not be assumed for other product families. For automotive GPS navigators
On a compatible navigator, select a suitable Wi-Fi network in its Wi-Fi or update settings, connect the unit to external power, then start the offered map or software update. If the navigator needs a satellite time signal, place it outdoors with a clear view of the sky. A map update can take substantially longer than a software update, so do not start it just before driving: Garmin warns that the navigator may be unusable for navigation until the wireless download and installation are complete.
For the automotive update process covered in Garmin’s navigator Wi-Fi instructions, mobile hotspots and MiFi tethering, satellite internet, dial-up, and captive-portal networks are not supported. A hotel or restaurant network that requires a browser sign-in is therefore a poor choice. Use a compatible, reliable network and external power, and verify requirements for your exact navigator.

Software updates versus map updates
For a watch or Edge, a device-software update is usually the relevant maintenance task; maps may not apply. Automotive navigators can offer both software and map updates, and those are separate downloads. Map files are larger than ordinary software files and can take longer to download and install. Do not assume that updating the navigator’s software also refreshed its maps. Whether a map update is available can depend on the model and its map entitlement.

Use Garmin Express when your exact model lists it as the only update method, when wireless updating is unsupported or repeatedly fails, or when the model’s instructions recommend it for a first update. It can also be the more practical route for a large map update or when you need to install an available update without waiting for a wireless rollout.

If no update appears or an update fails
No prompt does not automatically mean something is wrong. The model may not support that wireless route, Garmin may not have offered the update to it yet, or a Connect-delivered update may still be downloading in the background. Work through these checks:
- Confirm the model and update method. Check its manual or model-specific page on Garmin Support. Make sure you are looking for software versus maps as appropriate.
- Check pairing and sync. In Garmin Connect, confirm the device is listed under More → Garmin Devices, then sync again.
- Check phone access. Turn on Bluetooth and allow Garmin Connect to run and sync in the background. Confirm the phone has internet access.
- Check power and storage. Charge the Garmin or connect it to external power. If it reports insufficient space, free storage using the device’s supported controls.
- For Wi-Fi, verify compatibility. Check the model’s documented network requirements. Remove and re-add the saved network, try another compatible network, and restart the router and Garmin.
- Restart and retry. Restart the Garmin and, if relevant, the phone; reopen Connect and sync once more.
- Switch to Express if needed. If the model supports no wireless option or the update repeatedly fails, use Garmin Express on a Windows or Mac computer or contact Garmin Support.
For compatible watch and Edge Wi-Fi setups, Garmin’s troubleshooting guidance includes power cycling, checking network compatibility, trying another network, removing and re-adding the network, and restarting the router. If using a computer, make sure the USB cable carries data; a charge-only cable may power the Garmin without allowing Express to detect it. A Garmin stuck on a logo or battery icon may need to charge before a computer can communicate with it.
Quick decision guide
- Watch or Edge: Try Garmin Connect first; use Wi-Fi if the exact model supports it. If an update is delayed or syncing fails, check the model’s support page and consider Express.
- Outdoor handheld: Check whether Garmin Connect or Garmin Explore supports updates for the model. Some handhelds should use Express for the first update; Garmin’s cited Foretrex guidance says a wireless update may take up to 48 hours to prompt installation.
- Automotive navigator: Use built-in Wi-Fi only if the model supports it, with a suitable network and external power. Use Express for unsupported devices, failed Wi-Fi updates, or difficult map downloads.
- Not sure: Look up the exact model’s manual or Garmin Support page. Garmin’s update methods are not universal.
Ordinary device-software updates and Garmin Express are described by Garmin as free. Map availability and entitlement can depend on the navigator and its included mapping rights, so check the device’s offer rather than assuming every map update is included.
