Yes—if it’s an LTE Galaxy Watch with an active, compatible cellular plan, you can use it away from your phone for calls, messages, mobile data and other supported functions. But that does not usually mean you can set it up from scratch without a phone: current Wear OS models generally need a compatible Android phone for pairing and activation. A Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model is not a phone replacement.
“Without a phone” can mean two different things
If you mean leaving your phone behind, an LTE Galaxy Watch can do that for many everyday tasks once it has been set up and its cellular service is active. If you mean never having access to a phone at all, the answer is more limited: initial setup, activation, some configuration and maintenance may still require a compatible Android phone.
| Situation | What may work | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Phone nearby over Bluetooth | The broadest set of phone-linked features, such as notifications, syncing and phone controls | A compatible, paired phone |
| Phone away; watch on Wi-Fi | Local tracking and stored content, plus some internet-connected apps | Completed setup and an available Wi-Fi network |
| Phone away; watch on LTE | Calls, messages, mobile data and supported connected apps | An LTE watch, compatible carrier and active plan |
“Standalone” means the watch can operate without the phone nearby; it does not guarantee that every phone feature, app or notification works in the same way. Samsung’s Wear OS setup guidance distinguishes LTE models from Bluetooth models, while Verizon’s standalone setup guidance notes that some functions may still depend on a phone.

Samsung says only LTE Wear OS Galaxy Watch models can be configured for standalone operation in its U.S. support guidance. The same guidance says Watch4 and Watch5 series watches must initially be set up with a compatible Android phone, including LTE versions. Samsung’s Watch6 materials likewise describe phone pairing and a separate wireless plan for standalone calling and texting. Newer LTE models, including Watch7 and Watch8, still require checking the exact version and carrier requirements; the Watch8’s “no phone needed” language refers to use away from a phone, not necessarily setup without one. See Samsung’s setup guidance, the Watch6 specification sheet, Watch7 specifications and the U.S. Watch8 LTE listing.
LTE support also varies by country, carrier, eSIM provisioning and account type. An imported LTE watch may not be approved for a U.S. carrier even if it has cellular hardware. For example, AT&T publishes approved device information; check the carrier’s current compatible-device document and confirm the exact model with your carrier before buying.
What you need before leaving the phone behind
- An LTE Galaxy Watch, rather than a Bluetooth/Wi-Fi-only model.
- A compatible Android phone for setup in the usual current Wear OS flow, with the Galaxy Wearable app. Android and memory requirements depend on the specific watch; Samsung lists Android 11 or later and more than 1.5 GB of memory for Watch7 compatibility.
- The required Samsung and Google accounts and any companion apps needed for your intended features.
- A carrier that supports the precise watch model and your intended service, plus an active watch plan or other qualifying service.
- A completed eSIM/mobile-plan activation. Samsung says activation needs a Wi-Fi or mobile-network connection.
Samsung documents a setup option for configuring a watch without a phone and pairing it later, but availability and supported features depend on model, region and software. Do not assume that option will work for your watch or carrier: check Samsung’s setup instructions for the exact model. If you have no access to a compatible Android phone even temporarily, verify setup and activation with both Samsung and the carrier before buying.

Activating LTE service
The screens vary by watch software and carrier, but Samsung’s U.S. process is broadly:
- Pair the watch with a compatible phone in Galaxy Wearable and complete the initial setup.
- Open the watch’s mobile-plan controls. Samsung identifies the route as Watch settings or the Home tab → Mobile plans; labels can differ by software version.
- Choose the carrier or follow its activation flow, then add an eligible smartwatch or standalone plan.
- Keep the watch connected to Wi-Fi or mobile service while the eSIM profile activates.
- Confirm that the watch shows mobile-network service. Then test the capabilities you actually need with the phone powered off or outside Bluetooth range.
Samsung’s U.S. support article names AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon for compatible phone-linked service, but eligibility is not universal across models, accounts or plans. Start with Samsung’s LTE activation guidance, then have the carrier confirm the watch’s exact model number, plan type and voice, SMS and data support.
What works when the phone is not nearby?
Calls and messages
An activated LTE watch can make and receive calls and send or receive messages away from the phone when its plan and carrier support those services. Number behavior varies: a carrier may share the phone number, use a companion number, forward calls or provide a separate watch number. Do not assume that standalone calling means the watch behaves exactly like a second handset on the same number. Message history and advanced features may also differ from the phone’s messaging app.

Mobile data, apps and navigation
LTE can connect supported watch apps to online services for things such as weather, maps, cloud features and app content. GPS-equipped models can record location during outdoor workouts without the phone. Navigation may still need an internet connection for some map functions, and a watch’s small screen is less convenient than a phone’s. Only apps designed to run on the watch can operate independently; companion apps that rely on phone-side functions may lose features. Samsung’s developer documentation describes restrictions in its without-phone-connection mode.
Music and podcasts
Downloaded or cached music can play without a phone or network, typically through Bluetooth headphones or the watch speaker. With LTE, supported streaming services may work away from the phone, subject to the app and plan. Streaming uses mobile data and can drain the battery faster than playing downloaded content.
Fitness, health and payments
Core sensor tracking, alarms and GPS workouts can continue without a phone nearby. The watch may sync data later when it reconnects. Detailed analysis, account synchronization and certain health features can require a Samsung phone, account or companion app; regional availability also varies. A watch is not a substitute for a medical device. Samsung’s Watch6 specifications describe compatibility and health-feature limitations.

Contactless payments can work after a supported payment service and card are configured, but setup or verification commonly involves the phone. Supported banks and offline payment behavior depend on the service and region.
Emergency functions
Do not assume that SOS, fall detection, location sharing or emergency calling will work in every place or configuration. Availability can depend on the watch model, cellular registration, country, carrier, permissions, account setup and whether the watch is connected to a phone or Wi-Fi. Check the feature’s local requirements and test settings in advance; keep the watch charged and do not rely on it as the only emergency option.

What may still require the phone?
Even when LTE works, a paired phone can remain important for initial setup, plan activation, Galaxy Wearable configuration, account recovery, some updates and troubleshooting. Phone notification mirroring, remote phone controls, some email or synchronization functions, and apps that depend on a phone connection may be unavailable or limited. Health features may have separate phone or region requirements. Verizon specifically notes that software updates and email-related functions can still require a phone in its standalone-device guidance.

Does Wi-Fi make a Bluetooth model a phone replacement?
No. Wi-Fi can give some apps internet access when the watch is away from the phone and on a known network, but it does not let the watch register on a mobile carrier network. Local functions such as alarms, fitness tracking, GPS workouts and downloaded audio can still be useful on a Bluetooth/Wi-Fi watch. Limited phone-linked calling or messaging over Wi-Fi may depend on the paired phone and carrier service, so it is not the same as independent LTE calling.
LTE or Bluetooth/Wi-Fi: which should you choose?
| Choose | If you want | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| LTE | To leave your phone behind for calls, messages, connected apps, maps or streaming | Higher device cost in some listings, recurring service, carrier and model compatibility checks, and greater battery use during cellular activity |
| Bluetooth/Wi-Fi | Fitness and smartwatch functions while usually carrying your phone, without a watch-line charge | No independent mobile calling or carrier data; Wi-Fi only helps where a suitable network is available |
Choose LTE only if your carrier confirms the exact model and the plan supports the behavior you need. A watch advertised as “connected” may be an add-on line linked to a phone, not a standalone line. Ask whether the service supports activation without a continuously paired phone, independent voice and SMS, mobile data, and either number sharing or a separate number. Prepaid, MVNO, business and imported-device cases deserve particular scrutiny.
Budget for the watch itself and service separately. Monthly service, taxes, activation charges, device installments and promotional credits can all affect the actual cost. Do not treat an installment price as the cost of cellular service. Prices and plans change, so confirm current terms directly with the carrier; for example, see the carrier’s own pages for Verizon prepaid smartwatch plans and AT&T Samsung wearables and service information.

Test it before depending on it
After activation, leave the phone behind or power it off and check the features that matter to you:
- Confirm the watch reports mobile service, not only Wi-Fi or a Bluetooth connection.
- Place a call and check which number appears to the recipient.
- Send and receive a message; verify that your intended messaging service works independently.
- Open a watch app that needs data, such as weather or maps, away from Wi-Fi.
- Start a GPS workout and verify that location recording works without the phone.
- Check downloaded audio separately from streaming, and review data and battery use.
- Review emergency-feature setup and local availability without placing a test call to emergency services.
When LTE activation or standalone use fails
- LTE will not activate: Confirm the watch is the LTE model; the carrier supports its exact model and region; the account has an eligible plan; the device is not locked to another carrier; and the eSIM activation completed. Keep Wi-Fi or mobile connectivity available during activation and check for software updates. Samsung directs customers with network or eSIM issues to carrier support and Samsung Members in its activation guidance.
- LTE appears, but calls or texts fail: Ask whether the plan includes voice and SMS, whether number sharing is configured, and whether the account’s eSIM and model details are correct. Test with the phone powered off so phone-routed service does not mask the problem.
- Apps work only on Wi-Fi: The watch may lack an active mobile plan or data service, or the app may not support independent LTE operation.
- An imported watch will not activate: LTE bands, eSIM provisioning, firmware and carrier approval can differ by region. Verify U.S. compatibility for the precise model before purchase.
- Setup insists on a phone: That may be expected for the model and software, not a defect. Standalone operation after activation is different from phone-free setup.
Should you buy one for a child or someone without a smartphone?
An LTE Galaxy Watch can reduce the need to carry a phone, but it is not automatically an easy phone-free purchase. Confirm that the intended carrier offers the required standalone service and number arrangement, that the exact watch can be activated on that account, and that an adult has access to a compatible Android phone for setup and future maintenance. If the wearer needs dependable emergency contact, verify the relevant local functions and coverage rather than assuming the watch alone is sufficient.
