Casio released the G-SHOCK GBA-950 series in Japan in May 2025, with a Japanese list price of ¥25,300 including tax. Its three launch models pair an analog-digital G-SHOCK design with step counting and basic running tools. The key GPS caveat: the watch uses a paired smartphone’s GPS to calibrate distance; it is not a standalone GPS watch.
What Casio launched
The GBA-950 is an urban-sports G-SHOCK for people who want daily activity and running features in a conventional watch format, rather than a touchscreen smartwatch. The initial Japanese lineup comprised three colorways:
- GBA-950-1A: black.
- GBA-950-2A: purple and black.
- GBA-950-7A: white and gray.
Casio’s Japanese product pages give May 2025 as the release month and ¥25,300 including tax as the Japanese list price. Those details apply to the Japanese launch, not necessarily to other markets. Casio’s GBA-950-7A product page lists the official Japanese specifications.

The GBA-950 does not appear to have its own GPS receiver. Instead, it connects to a smartphone over Bluetooth and uses the phone’s GPS data to correct or calibrate distance measurement. Casio says the watch can then measure running distance and pace without remaining connected to the phone during the run. That is useful for casual training, but it is not phone-free GPS tracking: the watch cannot independently acquire a GPS position or record a route like a dedicated GPS sports watch.
#1 Best Overall
- Take your daily training to the next level in both style and comfort with a G-SHOCK specially engineered for urban sports
- Find more joy in your workout with the GBA950, which comes packed with practical features to support your training regime
- The bezel and band are seamlessly molded into a single exterior piece, providing robust protection for the carbon fiber-reinforced resin case
In practical terms, the phone is needed for the GPS-assisted distance correction, while the watch itself handles timekeeping and its core watch functions. If independent GPS navigation, route mapping, or continuous GPS recording is essential, choose a watch with a verified built-in GPS receiver instead. Casio’s international product information describes the smartphone-assisted distance function.
Step tracking and running features
Daily steps
The watch automatically counts steps when the wearer starts walking. Its LCD displays the daily step total, while an indicator at the 12 o’clock position shows progress toward a step goal. Casio documents how the feature works, but the product materials do not establish independent accuracy testing; the step count should not be treated as a medical measurement.
Run timing and training tools
For running and workouts, the GBA-950 provides time and distance measurement, average pace, calorie estimates, auto-lap and manual lap timing, and lap/split records. Its interval timer supports up to five time settings. Casio also describes a five-level exercise-intensity display and a goal-achievement display.

The international specifications list memory for up to 45 recent stopwatch records. That is a record-memory limit, not a claim that the watch stores 45 days of activity history. Casio’s international specifications provide the record-memory figure.
What the CASIO WATCHES app adds
The CASIO WATCHES app handles pairing and watch registration, automatic time correction, settings such as alarms and timers, activity-history review, life-log management, phone finder, and supported external-app connections. For the GBA-950, Casio’s module 5737 support material says training logs can show lap time, average lap pace, lap distance, and total calories for an activity.
Casio’s support documentation describes Apple Health integration on iPhone for compatible step-counting watches, Strava for compatible activity-tracking watches, and Android Health Connect on Android 9 or later for compatible step-counting watches. The Android Health Connect integration is unavailable when the app region is set to China or Russia. These connections require setup in the app under ≡ → External App Connection; compatibility does not mean every GBA-950 data field is exported to every service. Casio’s external-app support page lists the qualifications.

Pairing the watch
- Install and open the CASIO WATCHES app.
- Open the app’s watch-management area and select the My Watch tab.
- Choose GBA-950 and follow the on-screen pairing instructions.
- Check that the Bluetooth connection indicator appears on the watch, then open its page in the app to configure settings or review activity data.
This is the path in Casio’s module 5737 manual; screen labels can vary with app version and phone operating system. Casio’s module 5737 manual covers pairing and connected functions.
If pairing or reconnection fails
- If the watch does not appear, check that Bluetooth is enabled, the watch is in the required connection state, and it is not already paired with another phone.
- If the Bluetooth indicator is absent, use the manual’s reconnection procedure. Casio identifies holding the watch’s D button for at least two seconds as a reconnection action in the relevant context.
- Turn off Airplane Mode before trying to connect; Bluetooth phone connection is unavailable while it is enabled.
- For phone finder, keep the CASIO WATCHES app running on the phone. A broken Bluetooth link also prevents phone notifications from sounding.
- When changing phones, remove the pairing through the watch and app; iPhone users may also need to delete the saved Bluetooth pairing in iOS.
Casio’s module 5737 support manual describes connection recovery and phone changes, and its PDF manual explains the Airplane Mode limitation.
Design, construction and specifications
For the Japanese GBA-950-7A listing, Casio specifies a 48.5 × 43.9 × 16 mm case and a weight of 53 grams. The watch has a resin case, bezel and band, shock-resistant construction, and 20-bar water resistance (a 200-meter rating in Casio’s product labeling). The rating is not a recommendation for every type of diving.

- Metal-clad daring meets sophisticated gleam in this Casio G-Shock that delivers Smartphone Link via Bluetooth(R) and Tough Solar charging system, all in a meticulously finished metal design with iconic octagonal bezel
- This model features a blue metallic vapor deposition dial that is complemented by a black band made of environmentally responsible bio-based resin
The analog-digital display combines luminous hands and indexes with a donut-shaped LCD and double LED illumination, which Casio calls Super Illuminator. The bezel-and-band exterior uses an “origami engineering” concept. Casio describes bio-based resin in key resin components; its international page also says the integrated exterior protects a carbon-fiber-reinforced resin case, while the Japanese specification summarizes the case and bezel materials as resin. The Japanese product page gives the dimensions and material specifications, and Casio’s G-SHOCK MOVE page describes the international construction.
Casio lists approximately two years of battery life. The watch uses Bluetooth for its smartphone link, not Wi-Fi or cellular service. Core timekeeping does not depend on a phone, but app-based settings, automatic time correction, activity-history transfer, and phone-assisted distance calibration do. Casio’s June 2025 product announcement gives the approximate battery life.

After the Japanese launch, Casio listed the GBA-950 internationally, including the orange-dial, black-base GBA-950-1A4. International pages also reference blue-and-white and yellow-green combinations, but color offerings differ by market; do not assume each reference is available in every country. The international GBA-950-1A4 page shows one later color option.

The U.S. G-SHOCK site lists the GBA950-1A and GBA950-7A with “BUY NOW” links. The available official material does not establish a current U.S. retail price, so the Japanese ¥25,300 tax-inclusive list price should not be treated as a U.S. price. Check the U.S. G-SHOCK buying page for current local availability.
Who the GBA-950 suits—and who should look elsewhere
The GBA-950 makes most sense for G-SHOCK fans, walkers, and casual runners who want step tracking, basic run metrics and interval timing in a rugged analog-digital watch, and who are comfortable carrying a phone for GPS-assisted distance calibration and app setup. Its 20-bar water-resistance rating, 53-gram listed weight for the Japanese 7A, and approximately two-year stated battery life suit buyers who prioritize a traditional watch over a frequently charged smartwatch.
It is a poor fit for runners who need standalone GPS, detailed route maps, structured training or recovery analysis, or wrist-based heart-rate data. Casio’s documented GBA-950 features do not establish heart-rate, blood-oxygen, sleep-analysis or ECG functions, nor a broad smartwatch app platform. Its 16 mm thickness and small information display also favor G-SHOCK styling and toughness over a slim profile or at-a-glance training dashboard. Buyers who want an extensive smartwatch and health-sensor ecosystem should compare options such as Apple Watch; runners prioritizing independent GPS and training tools can compare Garmin’s running watches.
