“Laser-shooting watch” is a catchy but misleading description of CenWatch. The crowdfunded wrist wearable is designed to use near-infrared LiDAR and motion sensors to recognize hand gestures, then send commands to phones, computers and other devices. It does not fire visible beams at them or project a keyboard into the air. Its capabilities, specifications and availability remain subject to important caveats: the 2025 Kickstarter campaign ended funded, but the sources reviewed do not verify current retail availability or independent product testing.
What is CenWatch?
CenWatch is a smartwatch-like wearable proposed as a gesture controller and computing hub. It combines a conventional watch-style display with sensors intended to track the wearer’s fingers and wrist. Its creator positioned it as a way to interact with phones, computers, presentations, smart-home equipment and AR/VR systems without touching a screen or holding a conventional controller. Campaign materials describe that broad vision; it should not be mistaken for verified compatibility with every device.
The key distinction is that CenWatch is not simply a smartwatch with a few wrist shortcuts. It is designed to act more like a wearable input device: recognize a set of mapped movements, then pass the resulting command to another system. Whether that feels useful depends on recognition reliability, comfort, software support and the receiving device—not just the sensor.
How the infrared LiDAR gesture control is supposed to work
The LiDAR scanner is positioned on the underside of the wrist, facing the hand. It emits near-infrared pulses and uses returning light to estimate the fingers’ three-dimensional positions relative to the watch. An inertial measurement unit (IMU) separately tracks wrist movement and orientation. Software is intended to combine those streams to interpret gestures in relation to the wearer’s arm and body, creating what the company describes as a virtual interaction area in front of the user.

The proposed command chain is: hand movement → LiDAR and IMU sensing → gesture recognition → Bluetooth or an integration → target device. The sensors do not send a beam of commands to a phone or TV; the watch must recognize a gesture and transmit an electronic instruction.
The company claimed fingertip-position resolution of up to 1 mm. That is a campaign or manufacturer figure, not an independently verified measure of real-world control accuracy. The available reporting does not establish gesture success rates, latency, false activations or performance across different hands and environments. New Atlas’ report also makes clear that the device does not project a visible red laser grid or a floating keyboard.
What gestures and controls are claimed?
Reported examples include tapping and clicking, swiping, scrolling and cursor-like control, as well as virtual typing, drawing or handwriting in midair, presentation commands and three-dimensional interaction for VR applications. These are intended gesture mappings—not evidence that the watch understands any arbitrary movement or can replace a keyboard without practice.

- 1.9 kinds of gesture recognition
- 2. Interface: IIC interface communication protocol
- 3. Operating voltage: 3.3V-5.0V
- 4. Gesture speed is 60°/S to 600°/S in normal mode, 60°/S to 1200°/S in game mode
- 5. Ambient light immunity: <100K Lux
The reported activation concept is deliberate: raise the forearm in front of the body at roughly a right angle, as if checking the time; perform the mapped gesture; then lower the wrist to stop or deactivate control. That posture may help avoid unintended commands, but it is a reported operating concept rather than a verified universal setup procedure.
Compatibility: Bluetooth does not mean universal control
Reported target platforms include Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux, along with smart TVs and smart-home devices through IFTTT, plus AR and VR glasses. Screen-based devices reportedly require Bluetooth pairing. Smart-home control through IFTTT involves additional configuration and service dependencies; it is not necessarily a direct, local connection between watch and appliance.
A Bluetooth link alone does not guarantee that a computer will accept mouse or keyboard input. Depending on the final software and target device, setup could require a companion app, HID support, operating-system permissions, a driver or an SDK. IFTTT commands can also depend on an enabled applet, active accounts, compatible services and network availability. A device may have Bluetooth and still lack the specific input pathway CenWatch needs.

Reported specifications—and what is still a claim
| Item | Reported figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 368 × 448 AMOLED | Reported product specification |
| Processor | MediaTek MT6789 / Helio G99-class, eight-core | Campaign-derived claim; final production hardware is not verified here |
| Operating system | Android 13 | Campaign material |
| Weight | 92 g (3.25 oz) | Reported figure |
| Battery | 1,700 mAh | Reported figure |
| Battery life | Up to 10 hours | Manufacturer/campaign claim; the use pattern behind the figure is unclear |
| Finger-position resolution | Up to 1 mm | Manufacturer/campaign claim, not independent test data |
| LiDAR data | 300,000-point clouds | Campaign claim, not independently validated here |
| Control range | 60 m (196 ft) in New Atlas; about 295 ft in campaign-derived material | Published figures conflict; neither should be treated as a verified practical range |
The range discrepancy is particularly worth noting: New Atlas reports 196 feet (60 metres), while campaign-derived material gives approximately 295 feet. Actual Bluetooth range varies with radio power, device class, obstructions and interference. The sources reviewed do not resolve which figure applies to final hardware or how either was measured.

Likewise, a 1,700-mAh battery and claimed runtime of up to 10 hours do not tell buyers how long the watch lasts with continuous LiDAR sensing, display use, Bluetooth and onboard processing. The stated figure is not accompanied in the reviewed material by a clear test condition distinguishing active gesture use from mixed or ordinary watch use.
Why put gesture sensing on the wrist for AR and VR?
The design rationale is to place sensing and some computing on the wrist rather than adding all of that hardware to glasses. In principle, this could leave more room in eyewear for optics or battery, reduce face-mounted hardware, and provide a wrist reference for interpreting finger movement without a handheld remote. Those are potential benefits of the approach, not demonstrated results: the available evidence does not show that CenWatch makes a particular pair of glasses lighter, longer-lasting or easier to use.

Where the idea could fit—and where it may fall short
A wrist-based gesture controller could be useful when touching a screen is inconvenient: advancing presentation slides, issuing a simple command to a paired device, or experimenting with alternative input for XR. It may interest developers exploring gesture interfaces and people looking for input options beyond a mouse or touchscreen. Those are plausible use cases, not proof of accessibility or day-to-day usability.
Midair input also has real trade-offs. A mouse, keyboard, touchscreen or handheld VR controller provides physical feedback; free-space gestures do not. Holding an arm up for repeated scrolling, typing or cursor work may become tiring. Fingers can occlude one another, and fast or ambiguous movements, awkward wrist orientation or gestures outside the sensing area may complicate recognition. Infrared sensing can also be affected by difficult lighting conditions, including strong sunlight, and by the surrounding environment. No independent data in the reviewed sources establishes how often CenWatch succeeds or fails in these situations.

Privacy merits a check, too. A sensor aimed at the wearer’s hand is different from a room-facing camera, but campaign material reportedly described developer access to point clouds, depth maps and infrared data. Before relying on a shipping product, buyers would want to know whether raw sensor data stays on the watch, goes to a phone or cloud service, or is exposed to third-party apps—and what permissions and retention rules apply.

Near-infrared sensing should not be casually assumed harmless without documentation. The reviewed material does not establish a final laser-safety classification or provide the final product’s regulatory paperwork. Buyers should look for the shipping device’s safety, radio and battery documentation rather than treating campaign specifications as certification.
Campaign outcome and availability
Availability status as of August 18, 2026: CenWatch’s Kickstarter campaign is over. It ran from February 13 to March 15, 2025, and BackerTracker reports $156,308 raised against a $10,000 goal. Successful funding shows that the campaign met its fundraising target; it does not by itself establish dependable mass production, fulfilled orders, retail distribution, a warranty or ongoing support. The sources reviewed do not verify current retail availability or completed fulfillment.
New Atlas reported an early-bird pledge of $299 and a planned retail price of $499. Those were campaign-era price signals, not a confirmed current price or proof that a retail product is on sale. The original Kickstarter page is useful as the campaign source, but its existence is not evidence of present stock.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow CenWatch compares with familiar alternatives
- Apple Watch-style wrist gestures: Established wrist input can be convenient for watch functions, but it is not the same as a general LiDAR-based system for spatial finger tracking and broad midair mouse or keyboard control. See Apple’s Watch page.
- Camera-based hand tracking, such as Ultraleap: Purpose-built optical tracking can support interactive and XR applications, but typically depends on external or headset-mounted tracking hardware rather than a watch-like wrist sensor. See Ultraleap’s hand-tracking information.
- Meta Quest hand tracking and controllers: These sit within a dedicated XR platform, with supported hand tracking and conventional controllers; they are not cross-device wrist remotes for laptops, presentations and smart-home gear. See Meta Quest.
- Mouse, keyboard or conventional remote: These are less futuristic but offer familiar tactile feedback and established workflows. For sustained typing or precise cursor work, CenWatch would need to demonstrate a meaningful advantage in comfort and reliability to displace them.
These alternatives solve overlapping but different problems. CenWatch’s distinctive proposition is wrist-mounted sensing intended to work across device categories; the unresolved question is whether that convenience survives the realities of setup, gesture accuracy, fatigue and software support.
Who should consider it?
CenWatch is most relevant to readers interested in experimental wearable interfaces, XR input or touchless controls who are comfortable with crowdfunding uncertainty and are willing to check the final hardware, software, support and safety details. It is a poor fit for someone who needs a currently available, supported purchase; depends on proven low-latency and highly reliable input; types extensively; or dislikes repetitive arm gestures. Do not treat a funded campaign as equivalent to a finished, supported retail smartwatch.
