The Citizen Promaster Altichron is a light-powered analog watch with real altitude and compass functions, but those functions are best treated as field references—not precision instruments. Its altimeter infers elevation from air pressure and can drift with the weather; its electronic compass reads magnetic direction and needs careful leveling, calibration and distance from interference. It is an unusual, useful secondary outdoor watch for someone who wants instrumentation on an analog dial, not a replacement for a map, dedicated compass or GPS navigation device.
What the Altichron is—and what it is not
The Altichron combines conventional timekeeping with a pressure-sensor altimeter and an electronic geomagnetic compass. The sensors are electronic, but their readings are shown with physical hands. Citizen’s design keeps the ordinary time display visible while the wearer checks altitude or direction. The Eco-Drive movement charges from light, so it does not need a replaceable battery; it still has a finite power reserve and must be kept charged. See Citizen’s design overview.
It is not GPS-based and does not record a route, show a map, or store an altitude history. Citizen says the measurements are references and recommends specialized equipment when high accuracy is required. That distinction matters most when using the watch for navigation or making decisions where a wrong reading could have serious consequences. Identify the reference before comparing specifications
Altichron specifications vary by model. In particular, J280 models use metric altitude and J290 models use feet. Case material, crystal, strap and availability also depend on the reference; do not assume a specification applies to every Altichron.

The brand’s J280/J290 guide gives the family altitude ranges and controls, while individual product pages establish reference-specific materials and features. The two examples from Citizen’s U.S. site are listed at 200 m water resistance, but that rating should not be generalized beyond references that carry it. Check the reference printed on the caseback and the matching product documentation before purchase.
How the analog altimeter reads elevation
The Altichron estimates altitude from atmospheric pressure; it does not measure elevation directly with GPS, radar or a laser. Air pressure changes with elevation, but it also changes with weather and local conditions. As a result, the watch can indicate an apparent elevation change while you are stationary, or pressure drift can obscure a real ascent or descent.
On the J280, three functional hands represent thousands of meters, hundreds of meters and 2.5-meter increments. Its indicated range is approximately −300 to 10,000 m; above 6,000 m, the display uses 5-meter increments. J290 uses feet and indicates approximately −1,000 to 32,000 ft. The dial takes interpretation rather than delivering a single digital number, so learn the model’s scale—including its negative-altitude markings—before relying on it. Take an altitude reading
- Keep the crown at position 0.
- Press button B to start altitude measurement.
- Wait for the hands to stop, then read the three altitude hands using the scale for your model.
- While altitude is displayed, press button A to show compass direction temporarily on the 100-meter/1,000-foot hand; press A again to return to altitude.
- Press button B to end the measurement.
There is no meaningful accuracy verdict from a single reading without a known elevation and calibration record. For a practical check, compare a reading at a known trailhead, calibrate there, then compare at a known higher point and again after returning. Note the time, location and weather conditions. If the return reading differs, pressure may have changed; do not automatically interpret the difference as a sensor fault or a change in your location.

Calibrate at a known elevation
- Start altitude measurement with button B.
- Press and hold button A to move the altitude hands toward the known elevation.
- Hold button B for at least three seconds to set the corrected altitude.
- The watch returns to measured-altitude indication. If you do nothing, the corrected value returns automatically to measured indication after about one minute.
- To reset the calibration value, press buttons A and B simultaneously.
Calibration establishes a reference under the current pressure conditions; it does not permanently correct the watch for later weather changes. Recalibrate when you can verify your elevation, particularly after a substantial change in conditions. If you are below sea level, follow the negative portion of the scale rather than reading the fine-scale hand as though all values were positive.
How the compass works and how to get a reading
The electronic compass senses Earth’s magnetic field, so its default reference is magnetic north—not true north. The difference, called magnetic declination, varies by location. For a map bearing that needs true north, account for declination using the correction procedure in the operating guide. Hold the watch dial level and still while the direction settles; an angled or moving watch can give a poor reading.
- Move away from phones, vehicles, power lines, railway overhead wires, magnets and large metal structures.
- Hold the watch horizontally with the dial level.
- Press button A and keep the watch still until the direction reading settles.
- Press button A to stop the compass, or let it end automatically after about 30 seconds.
If a reading is implausible, first move away from interference and repeat it. Calibrate as instructed by Citizen, including two-point correction where needed. If the compass hand behaves abnormally or stops at the error mark, abnormal magnetism may be involved; retry away from the source. If the behavior persists, Citizen directs the wearer to a service center. The compass is vulnerable to interference from nearby metal and electromagnetic sources, so a reliable-looking reading in one place is not proof that it will be reliable everywhere.

Power, operating limits and field precautions
- Charge before a trip: Citizen’s guide recommends power-reserve level 2 or higher before altitude or compass measurement. Ordinary timekeeping does not by itself establish that the instrument functions are ready.
- Allow for pressure changes: Weather, temperature, ventilation and enclosed spaces such as buildings or vehicles can affect pressure readings. Aircraft and other pressurized environments are especially poor contexts for treating the display as ground elevation.
- Know the scale limit: If altitude exceeds the model’s indication range, Citizen says the high-order altitude hand points to the arrow position at 3 o’clock and stops.
- Use the right backup: Carry a map and dedicated compass or suitable GPS equipment when route-finding or safety depends on accurate navigation. Citizen itself limits the watch’s readings to reference use.
Citizen’s global product page says the Altichron was demonstrated operating at −20°C; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified cold-weather test. What it is like to wear—and what the evidence supports
The cited examples are large: 47 mm for BN4065-07L and BN5058-07E, and 49 mm for BN5035-02F. That size is part of the instrument-like design, but case diameter alone cannot predict fit. Lug-to-lug length, thickness, weight, wrist circumference and strap flexibility are not established by the cited product information, so comfort claims require trying the exact reference on your wrist. Consider whether the case clears a jacket cuff and backpack straps, and whether the pushers or crown contact your hand during movement.
Citizen’s design article describes the functional hands and color-coded controls as deliberately coordinated, associating red with direction and yellow with altitude. That design rationale does not remove the learning curve: reading an analog altitude scale is slower than checking a digital numeral. Who should buy an Altichron?
- Good fit: watch enthusiasts drawn to unusual analog engineering; hikers or skiers who want a secondary elevation and direction reference; buyers comfortable calibrating and interpreting a pressure-based instrument.
- Look elsewhere: anyone needing authoritative elevation, route mapping, GPS tracks or stored data; users who want quick digital readings; or buyers who do not want a large case.
- Choose by reference: seek a J280 model for metric readings or a J290 model for feet, then confirm the exact case material, crystal, strap and current market availability for that reference.
For U.S. buyers, Citizen’s BN4065-07L page showed out-of-stock status on August 18, 2026, while its BN5058-07E page showed a dated sale-price signal. Those are snapshots for those specific listings, not proof that a model is discontinued or that the price will remain available.
