The Diesel On Axial still looks unlike most smartwatches: its oversized, rivet-edged case and Diesel-first styling make it a genuine fashion statement. But it is a 2019-era Wear OS 2 watch, and in 2026 its aging software, weak review-era battery performance and the risk of a worn-out battery make it a style-first purchase—not a sensible default smartwatch. Consider one only if the design is the point, the price reflects its age, and you can verify pairing and battery health before keeping it.
What the Diesel On Axial is—and what it isn’t
The original Diesel On Axial is a Diesel-branded touchscreen smartwatch built on Fossil Group’s Wear OS platform. Independent reviews describe it as closely related to the Fossil Gen 5 hardware platform, rather than a separate technical design: Diesel’s distinctive exterior and software presentation sit on familiar Wear OS technology. It is not one of Diesel’s later watches, such as the Fadelite, Griffed or Gen 6 models.
That distinction matters now. The Axial was reviewed in 2019, with later coverage following in 2020 and 2022. Its Snapdragon Wear 3100 and 1GB of RAM were credible hardware for its time, but do not make it a modern Wear OS watch. Google’s Wear OS device guidance and update information distinguish between software generations and note that support varies by device and manufacturer. Don’t buy this expecting Wear OS 3, 4 or 5 features or a long future update runway.
Design: the reason to buy it
The Axial’s appeal is immediate and divisive. Its 48mm case is thick and visually assertive, with a rivet- or porthole-inspired bezel and three physical buttons along the right side. Digital Trends puts the thickness at about 12mm. Instead of trying to pass as a minimal watch with a screen, it looks like a Diesel fashion accessory built around one.

Variants pair that case with different looks, including leather, metal, nylon and denim options. Diesel also supplied more experimental faces; Digital Trends highlighted the layered “Information Tunnel” design. The result is more memorable than a generic round smartwatch, but “stylish” is subjective: this is bold industrial fashion, not discreet versatility.
Think about fit before anything else. The 48mm case is best suited to medium or larger wrists and casual outfits such as denim or streetwear. On a slim wrist it is likely to dominate; its thickness can also catch on a narrow shirt cuff and feel out of place with tailored clothes. If you prefer a watch that disappears into an outfit, choose something smaller. A metal strap may look dressier but adds to the visual bulk; leather is more fashion-oriented, while nylon or silicone is more practical for exercise and wet conditions.
Features and everyday performance
For its generation, the Axial had a broad smartwatch feature set. Diesel lists built-in GPS, heart-rate and activity tracking, a speaker, notifications, calendar and music controls, custom faces, third-party apps, Google Assistant, Google Fit and Google Pay. The product page also calls it “swimproof.” These are manufacturer-listed capabilities, not a guarantee that every service works on every current phone, account or regional setup.

The Snapdragon Wear 3100 and 1GB of RAM helped Diesel’s animated faces run more smoothly than on some earlier Diesel watches, according to contemporary coverage. Even then, reviewers found that Wear OS could feel sluggish. A surviving unit may be less responsive still because of battery wear, aged storage, background apps or outdated software. The fair expectation is basic smartwatch tasks when everything is working—not fast, modern performance.
Fitness features are similarly basic by 2026 standards. GPS and heart-rate tracking can support everyday activity tracking, but should not be confused with the more advanced health sensors and fitness platforms available on newer watches. The Axial is not the right choice if you depend on detailed training analysis, sleep tracking, ECG, blood-oxygen measurement or recovery metrics.
Battery life is the biggest practical drawback
Diesel advertised “multi-day battery life in Extended Mode,” but that does not mean multi-day endurance with the full smartwatch experience enabled. Extended or low-power operation trades functionality for longer runtime. Independent reviews criticized the Axial’s battery life even when it was new; those review-era impressions are useful context, not a runtime guarantee for any particular watch in 2026.

Age adds a separate risk: two used Axials can behave very differently depending on battery condition. Before buying, ask the seller how long the watch lasts from a full charge and under what settings; whether GPS, heart-rate monitoring, Wi-Fi and always-on display are on; whether the battery has been replaced; whether it shuts down under load; and whether the charger is included and works reliably. If the seller cannot demonstrate charging and ordinary operation—or offer a meaningful return window—a low asking price may not be a bargain.
Phone compatibility: Android is the safer bet
Diesel’s US product page lists compatibility with Android 6.0 or newer (excluding Android Go) and iOS 10 or newer. Those are original product requirements, not proof that the watch will pair with every phone running current software. The Axial is a Wear OS 2-era device, and setup and features depend on the watch’s installed software, phone platform, country and service requirements. Google’s device support guidance makes clear that compatibility and features vary. The manufacturer’s broad “works with iPhone and Android” claim should not be read as full feature parity.
Android owners are the safer audience, but should still confirm the exact watch can be set up with their phone before the return period ends. iPhone owners should be more cautious, especially if they rely on messaging, payments or broad integration. If you cannot test pairing with your own iPhone and iOS version before purchase, a current Apple Watch is the lower-risk ecosystem choice.

Diesel lists Google Pay support, with country restrictions. Google Wallet is the current consumer-facing name in many markets, but the listing alone does not guarantee that payments will work on a particular Axial, account or region today. Verify service availability before treating wrist payments as a reason to buy.
Setting it up—or moving it to another phone
If you buy one, complete setup while you still have a return option. Charge the watch and phone, turn on Bluetooth and install the companion app appropriate to the watch’s software generation. Google’s Android setup instructions say to open Wear OS, tap Set it up, select the watch, confirm that the code matches on both devices and follow the prompts. Finish account and permission setup, then install any updates the watch offers.

If pairing fails, forget the watch in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, restart both devices, factory-reset the watch, reinstall or update the companion app, and retry with the devices close together. If account setup or app availability still fails, contact the manufacturer or seller while a return is possible. Don’t weaken account security as a routine troubleshooting step.

Diesel calls the Axial “swimproof,” but the product information cited here does not provide a specific ATM or IP rating. Treat that wording cautiously: it is not a reason to assume suitability for deep water, and seals can deteriorate with age. Even if the watch itself is used around water, a leather strap is a poor choice for swimming, showers and heavy sweat. Choose a compatible nylon or silicone strap for exercise and wet conditions, and confirm the exact lug width and connector compatibility for your variant before ordering a replacement.
Does buying one in 2026 make sense?
Diesel’s US pages have listed Axial variants at prices from $250 to $350, including a DT2022 black nylon model shown at $350 and a brown-leather DZT2032 at $250. The pages have displayed mixed purchase and availability signals, so stock and final price must be confirmed at checkout. A denim variant’s listing has also shown final-sale/no-return language. Check the terms for the exact model and region: new old stock, used and refurbished watches carry different battery, warranty and return risks.
At or near its original $350 starting price, the Axial is difficult to justify on technology alone. A steep discount is more reasonable if you specifically want the design, but there is no universal fair price: condition, included charger, return rights and demonstrated battery life matter. Compare it with a current smartwatch if you want a longer support horizon or stronger health features. Official product families to consider include Google Pixel Watch for Android users seeking a current Google ecosystem, Samsung Galaxy Watch for Android integration, Garmin watches for fitness and outdoor use, and Apple Watch for iPhone users. None is a direct substitute for the Axial’s particular Diesel look.

The Diesel On Axial does deliver something most smartwatches do not: an unmistakable, fashion-led identity. That remains a real strength, not a substitute for one. In 2026, however, its Wear OS 2-era platform, review-era battery weakness and the uncertain condition of old batteries outweigh its feature list for most buyers. Buy it only if the design is specifically what you want, the 48mm size works for you, and you can verify setup, charging and battery performance. For everyone else, a newer smartwatch—or a traditional Diesel watch paired with a separate fitness tracker—is the safer choice.
