Samsung Health is generally useful for tracking heart-rate trends and estimating your pulse during routine activity, but it is not consistently as precise as a chest strap—and it is not a medical ECG. Readings are most dependable when you are still or doing steady exercise with a well-fitted watch. Motion, wrist position, and exercise type can make them meaningfully wrong.

That makes a Galaxy Watch a reasonable wellness tracker, not a tool for diagnosing a heart problem or making safety-critical decisions. If precise workout data matters, consider a chest strap; if symptoms or repeated abnormal readings concern you, contact a clinician rather than relying on the watch.

What Samsung Health measures

A compatible Galaxy Watch’s routine heart-rate feature uses photoplethysmography (PPG): light from sensors on the watch’s back detects changes in blood flow near the skin, and software estimates beats per minute. Samsung describes its sensor system as using green, infrared, and red light channels in its measurement guide.

That is an optical estimate of your pulse at the wrist, not an electrical recording of your heart. Heart rate is the number of beats per minute; pulse is the pressure wave detected at a peripheral site. They usually correspond closely, but the terms are not interchangeable in every situation. Rhythm describes the timing and regularity of beats. An ECG records electrical cardiac activity through electrodes. A watch can estimate beats per minute without identifying every rhythm abnormality.

What validation studies say

The clearest recent device-specific evidence in the supplied research is a 2026 study of 55 healthy adults using a Galaxy Watch6 during a maximal treadmill cardiopulmonary exercise test. Compared with a Polar H10 chest strap, the Watch6 had median absolute errors of roughly 1–3 beats per minute across intensity zones. But its average bias was an under-reading of 2.67 bpm, and individual limits of agreement were wide—approximately −16.9 to +11.6 bpm. In other words, a good average result did not guarantee a close match for each reading. See the study abstract.

A separate 2026 treadmill comparison involving 37 healthy young adults found that Apple Watch SE and Polar Verity Sense generally had lower errors than Galaxy Watch6 under that study’s protocol. This is not a universal ranking of brands or models; it does show why Samsung should not automatically be called the accuracy leader. The comparison study tested specific devices in a specific group and exercise setup.

Earlier Samsung-specific research also found that performance varies with activity. A Galaxy Watch Active2 comparison with Holter ECG reported larger errors during some resting, typing, and exercise conditions (study). A study of Gear Sport measurements in everyday conditions likewise cautioned that free-living PPG readings have limitations and should not be assumed accurate simply because a watch displays a number (study). Results from Active2, Gear Sport, Watch4, or Watch6 should not be treated as a guarantee for every Galaxy Watch: hardware, software, users, and conditions differ.

When judging accuracy, correlation alone is not enough. Two devices can rise and fall together while disagreeing by several beats per minute. Mean absolute error, average bias, the range of individual disagreement, activity, and the reference device all matter.

How useful are readings in different situations?

Situation What to expect Main caveat
Sitting quietly Often useful for a spot estimate and for following trends over time. A single unexpected reading should be repeated after resting; a number is not a diagnosis.
Walking or steady jogging Often useful when the watch stays in stable contact with the skin. Fit, arm movement, and delayed response to changing effort can affect the result.
Steady running Can provide a useful estimate of workout intensity. Do not assume every displayed value is exact, especially during pace changes.
Intervals or sprints Mixed; convenient for a broad view of effort. Rapid changes can challenge wrist sensors, which may lag or smooth changes. A chest strap is preferable for precise zone control.
Cycling Mixed to poor for some riders. Gripping handlebars and wrist position can interfere with optical contact.
Weightlifting Often less dependable than steady aerobic exercise. Wrist flexion, gripping, and muscle movement can disrupt the signal.
Sleep or resting-heart-rate trends Useful as a way to observe patterns over time. Not a diagnostic cardiac or sleep test; day-to-day readings can reflect stress, illness, caffeine, sleep, or recent activity.
Possible irregular rhythm Routine optical tracking has limits. A pulse estimate cannot rule out an arrhythmia. Use supported ECG features as directed and seek professional advice.

The activity pattern is consistent with broader wrist-PPG research: a systematic review found smaller average errors during sleep, rest, and treadmill exercise, and materially larger errors during resistance training and cycling. Those findings concern wrist wearables generally, not a Samsung-specific error rate for each activity (systematic review).

Why a Galaxy Watch reading can be wrong

  • Loose or unstable fit: A shifting sensor can lose skin contact or register movement. Samsung recommends a snug fit and stable sensor contact in its wear and measurement guidance.
  • Placement over the wrist bone: The watch should sit slightly above the wrist bone, with its back flat against the skin—not perched on the bone or sliding around.
  • Motion and rapid intensity changes: Arm motion can obscure the pulse signal. An optical algorithm may lag, smooth a sudden change, or briefly display an implausible value.
  • Exercise mechanics: Cycling grip, repeated wrist flexion, impact, and weightlifting can all make stable optical readings harder to obtain.
  • Sweat, water, lotion, or dirt: These can interfere with the optical path. Samsung advises keeping the sensor clean and dry; see its Health Monitor guidance.
  • Cold or reduced circulation: Less blood flow near the skin can weaken the signal. This is a general limitation of optical sensing, not a Samsung-only defect.
  • Individual differences: Skin contact, tattoos, hair, and anatomy can affect signal quality. The effect varies, so there is no dependable universal error direction or percentage.
  • Irregular rhythms or pulse deficits: Some rhythm conditions make a wrist pulse difficult to interpret. PPG may miss an episode or produce a reading that does not capture the rhythm’s complexity.

How to get a more reliable reading

  1. Stop moving and sit quietly for several minutes.
  2. Clean and dry the watch’s rear sensor and the skin beneath it.
  3. Position the watch slightly above the wrist bone, flat against the skin.
  4. Tighten the band enough to prevent slipping, without making it uncomfortable.
  5. Rest and support your arm while the watch takes the measurement.
  6. Repeat an unexpected result. If a discrepancy keeps happening, note whether it occurs at rest or during a particular activity.

For an at-rest comparison with another consumer device, rest quietly first, take readings close together, and repeat the comparison several times. A fingertip pulse oximeter can be a useful spot-check, but it is not automatically a gold standard: it also relies on optical sensing and can be affected by motion, cold fingers, and poor circulation. Do not declare one device correct based on a single comparison.

Galaxy Watch versus a chest strap, pulse oximeter, and ECG

For everyday convenience and trends: A Galaxy Watch is often a sensible choice if you want one device for wellness tracking, routine activity estimates, and a view of how your resting heart rate changes over time. A persistent change can be worth discussing with a clinician, but the watch cannot establish its cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For precise exercise-zone tracking: A chest strap such as the Polar H10 is a stronger practical choice when you care about intervals, cycling, resistance exercise, or minimizing lag during rapid heart-rate changes. It measures electrical signals at the chest and was used as the reference monitor in the 2026 Watch6 exercise study. It is still an exercise monitor, not a substitute for a clinical 12-lead ECG.

For a quick spot-check: A fingertip pulse oximeter may offer a convenient reading at rest, but it is not an ECG and has its own signal limitations. Compare repeated readings under similar conditions rather than treating one consumer device as infallible.

For a diagnosis or clinical monitoring: Neither routine Samsung Health heart-rate tracking nor a consumer chest strap replaces professional evaluation. A clinician may use a 12-lead ECG, an ambulatory monitor, an examination, or other tests depending on the question.

Samsung’s ECG and irregular-rhythm features are different tools

On supported devices and in supported regions, Samsung Health Monitor can record an ECG and offer an Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature. These are separate from the ordinary optical heart-rate estimate. Samsung says IHRN checks the pulse periodically while the wearer is still; it is not continuously monitoring for atrial fibrillation and may miss episodes, including those lasting less than an hour. A notification should prompt the user to record an ECG if available and seek professional guidance—not to self-diagnose. Details and limitations are on Samsung’s U.S. Health Monitor page.

An ECG classification may indicate that a tracing is consistent with sinus rhythm or possible AFib, but that is not the same as a clinical diagnosis. Samsung says its ECG feature is not intended to diagnose a heart attack or replace professional diagnosis and treatment. It cannot rule out AFib, a heart attack, heart failure, blood clots, or other heart conditions. ECG and IHRN availability depends on watch model, phone compatibility, software, and region; do not assume every Galaxy Watch supports every feature. The cited age and availability details are for Samsung’s U.S. information as of August 18, 2026, and can differ elsewhere.

When not to rely on the watch

Do not use a Galaxy Watch reading to make medication or treatment decisions, rule out an arrhythmia, or delay care. Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath, unusual weakness, or other emergency symptoms rather than troubleshooting a wearable. Samsung likewise cautions users not to make independent clinical decisions or delay emergency care based on its ECG app.

If you repeatedly see implausible numbers, a persistent discrepancy from another measurement, or a resting rate that concerns you, take note of the readings and circumstances and contact a healthcare professional—especially if you have symptoms or known heart disease. A watch can supply useful context, but it cannot explain what a number means for your health.

Who should use Samsung Health for heart rate?

  • Casual wellness user: A Galaxy Watch is generally suitable for broad trends and routine activity estimates, provided you treat readings as estimates rather than clinical measurements.
  • Endurance athlete: Useful for convenience and long-term tracking; consider a chest strap when precise zones or rapid interval response matter.
  • Cyclist or strength trainee: Expect wrist readings to be less dependable in some sessions. A chest strap is a better exercise reference if the data drives training decisions.
  • Person checking palpitations: Do not use a routine heart-rate number to diagnose or exclude a rhythm problem. If supported, follow Samsung’s ECG instructions and discuss symptoms or notifications with a clinician.
  • Person with known heart disease: Follow the clinician’s monitoring plan. A consumer watch is not a replacement for prescribed monitoring or medical advice.
  • Buyer choosing an ecosystem: Choose a Galaxy Watch for its broader smartwatch and Samsung integration if that suits you, not on a promise of medical-grade heart-rate accuracy. The Watch6 studies cited here do not establish a universal winner across brands or newer models.
