Water Lock is a software mode that stops water droplets from triggering your Galaxy Watch’s touchscreen and certain wake controls. It does not increase the watch’s water resistance, repair damaged seals, or make diving and high-pressure water safe.
To enable it, swipe down from the watch face and tap the Water Lock icon with two droplets, or use Settings → Advanced (or Advanced features) → Water lock. To disable it, press and hold the watch’s Home/Power button until the unlock sequence finishes. The watch may then play a sound intended to help clear water from the speaker.
What Water Lock does—and what it does not do
Water Lock is best understood as an input-protection mode. When it is enabled, the touchscreen is restricted so splashes, droplets and wet skin are less likely to start an app, change a setting or end a workout accidentally. Samsung also describes it as preventing accidental activation through the wake-up gesture while swimming. Depending on the model and software version, display and wake behaviors such as Always On Display may also be restricted.
Water Lock is not a physical seal, coating or additional water-resistance rating. It does not change the watch’s construction or make an activity safe when Samsung does not recommend that activity.

How to turn on Water Lock
From Quick settings
- Wake the watch and display the watch face.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Quick panel or Quick settings.
- Tap the Water Lock icon, shown as two water droplets.
The touchscreen will no longer respond normally while the mode is active. Icon placement and Quick-panel editing vary by model, region and software version. If you do not see the icon, open the panel’s edit or rearrange controls if available, or use the Settings method below.
From Settings
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap Advanced or Advanced features.
- Tap Water lock.
- Turn on the switch.
- If a safety notice appears, read it and tap the check mark.
Automatically when starting a swim workout
On supported models, starting a Swimming workout in Samsung Health can enable Water Lock automatically. Select the correct swim activity before entering the water. Automatic activation can vary with the watch model and software version, and starting a swim workout does not override the watch’s water-resistance limitations.
Can the Galaxy Wearable app enable it?
Some older Samsung guidance documents this phone-based route: open Galaxy Wearable → Advanced → Water lock → Turn on. It is a model- and software-dependent option rather than the universal method. Samsung specifically notes that this option was not available in the Galaxy Wearable app for Galaxy Watch4 or Watch4 Classic in the cited guidance. You must still disable Water Lock from the watch.

How to turn off Water Lock after swimming
- Press and hold the physical Home button, also called the Power button on some newer models.
- Continue holding it until the unlock animation completes or the watch displays instructions to release it.
- Allow the watch to play its water-ejection sound, if prompted.
Samsung’s regional instructions describe the hold time differently, so do not rely on one universal number of seconds. Hold the button continuously until the unlock sequence is complete. The sound is intended to help clear water from the speaker; it is not proof that every part of the watch is dry.
Afterward, lightly shake the watch and dry it with a soft, clean cloth. Do not put pointed objects into the speaker or other openings.
When should you use Water Lock?
- Use it for: pool swimming with a model whose Samsung guidance permits that activity, swim workouts, and wet or splash-heavy exercise where accidental taps are likely.
- It is optional for: light rain, hand washing or sweat, provided the specific watch is rated for that exposure. It can still prevent false touches.
- Do not treat it as permission for: diving, scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, water skiing, fast-moving water, high-impact water sports, pressure washers or high-pressure spray.
Showering also requires checking the exact model’s guidance. A water-resistant watch is not automatically suitable for every shower, steam room or temperature change, and the band may have different limitations from the watch.

Can you swim or shower with a Galaxy Watch?

| Fast-moving water | Avoid rivers and similar conditions unless the model’s specific guidance says otherwise. |

Samsung’s water-resistance guidance warns that resistance can be reduced by impact, disassembly, chemicals, pressure and ordinary wear. It is not permanent. A 5ATM rating is based on controlled testing and should not be interpreted as unrestricted use at 50 metres. IP68 and 5ATM are different classifications, not interchangeable guarantees.

Fresh water, salt water and chemicals
Most supported watches are intended for fresh-water swimming according to Samsung’s Water Lock guidance. Samsung specifically distinguishes the Galaxy Watch Ultra for saltwater use, while instructing owners to rinse it with fresh water and dry it thoroughly afterward. Do not extend that saltwater allowance to other models.
After exposure to chlorinated pool water, seawater or liquids such as coffee, soapy water, oils, perfume, sunscreen, hand sanitizer or cosmetics, follow the model’s care instructions. Where Samsung advises it, rinse with clean fresh water and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Water Lock does not neutralize chemicals or prevent them from affecting seals, finishes or components.
Do not use a hair dryer, direct heat or another heating device. Avoid saunas and steam rooms, and avoid sudden extreme temperature changes, because Samsung warns that these conditions can compromise water resistance.
What to do after swimming
- Exit Water Lock using the Home/Power button.
- Let the speaker-ejection sound run if the watch produces it.
- Lightly shake the watch to help remove surface water.
- If the watch encountered saltwater, pool chemicals or another liquid, rinse with fresh water when required by the model’s Samsung guidance.
- Dry the watch and band with a soft, clean cloth.
- Keep using the model’s water limits, especially if it has been dropped, cracked, opened or repaired.
Leather and hybrid bands are not water resistant under Samsung’s UK guidance. Check the band material separately from the watch body before swimming or showering; a water-resistant watch does not make a leather band suitable for water.

Galaxy Watch Water Lock compatibility
Samsung’s current U.S. Water Lock support article explicitly lists the following devices:
- Galaxy Fit, Galaxy Fit2 and Galaxy Fit3
- Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active series
- Gear Fit2 Pro and Gear Sport
- Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, Watch6 and Watch7
- Galaxy Watch Ultra
Support information can vary by country, model variant and software version. The original 2018 Galaxy Watch also has different water-use guidance: Samsung’s UK information says it should not be used in swimming pools or the sea despite its IP68 rating.
Galaxy Watch8 and Galaxy Watch8 Classic are current Samsung products, but the U.S. Water Lock support page used for this guide does not explicitly name them. Do not assume support solely because they are newer models. Check the exact watch’s current manual or regional support page before relying on Water Lock for swimming.

Troubleshooting Water Lock
The touchscreen does not work
Water Lock may still be active, or water and wet fingers may be interfering with input. Press and hold the Home/Power button until the unlock animation or instructions finish. Then dry the screen and your fingers. If the watch remains unresponsive, let it dry naturally and contact Samsung support rather than repeatedly pressing controls or applying heat.
The Water Lock icon is missing
- Open Quick settings and edit or rearrange the panel if your model supports it.
- Try Settings → Advanced/Advanced features → Water lock.
- Check the exact model’s manual because menu names and icon availability vary.
The watch will not exit Water Lock
Use the physical Home/Power button, not the touchscreen, and hold it continuously until the circle or unlock animation completes. Check that a case, debris or another obstruction is not preventing the button from moving. If there is still no response, treat it as a possible device fault or water intrusion and seek Samsung service guidance. Do not assume that charging or a forced restart is an officially verified Water Lock recovery method.
The speaker sounds muffled
Exit Water Lock so the ejection sound can run, lightly shake the watch, and dry it with a soft cloth. Do not insert anything into the speaker opening and do not use a hair dryer.

The watch was dropped, opened or repaired
Water resistance may no longer be dependable after impact, disassembly or repair. Water Lock cannot compensate for damaged seals. Avoid water exposure and obtain model-specific service advice.
