Apple’s September 9, 2025 event introduced four iPhones, three Apple Watches and AirPods Pro 3. The practical short list: iPhone 17 is the mainstream choice, iPhone Air prioritizes thinness, and the Pro models target camera and video users. For watches, SE 3 is the value option, Series 11 is the balanced health-and-fitness pick, and Ultra 3 is for outdoor use and satellite features. These are September 2025 U.S. launch prices, not verified current prices.
At a glance: what Apple announced
Apple announced iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max; Apple Watch Series 11, Ultra 3 and SE 3; and AirPods Pro 3. The event also introduced new cases, bands, charging accessories, a Crossbody Strap and an iPhone Air MagSafe Battery. Preorders opened September 12, 2025, and most new hardware became available September 19. iPhone Air also began availability in 22 additional countries and regions on September 26. iOS 26 and watchOS 26 became available September 15. The standard iPhone 17 has a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion up to 120Hz and an Always-On display. Apple specifies up to 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness and says Ceramic Shield 2 offers three times the previous generation’s scratch resistance. These are Apple’s specifications and claims, not independent test results.

It uses Apple’s A19 chip and starts with 256GB of storage, with a 512GB option. Its rear cameras are a 48MP Fusion Main with optical-quality 2x Telephoto and a new 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide. The 18MP Center Stage front camera supports Dual Capture, which records with front and rear cameras at once, and 4K HDR front-camera video. Apple rates video playback at up to 30 hours. Wireless features include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread via Apple’s N1 chip. Colors are black, lavender, mist blue, sage and white. Details are in Apple’s iPhone 17 announcement.
For many buyers, the meaningful change is that the entry model no longer means accepting a 60Hz display or 128GB starting storage. The 17 is a sensible choice for everyday photos and video; the Pro models make more sense when their dedicated telephoto hardware or professional video tools will actually be used.
iPhone Air: choose thinness, not a lower-cost Pro
Apple calls this model iPhone Air, not “iPhone 17 Air.” It is a titanium design and Apple’s thinnest iPhone to date, with a 6.55-inch display measured as a standard rectangle, an A19 Pro chip and storage options of 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. The front has Ceramic Shield 2 and the back Ceramic Shield; Apple claims three times better front scratch resistance than the prior generation. Air is a design-first alternative rather than a less expensive Pro. Buyers trade the conventional iPhone 17’s camera flexibility for a thinner chassis and pay a higher launch price. Apple’s announcement describes an advanced rear-camera system, but the supplied specifications do not establish a full three-camera setup like the Pro models. Consider whether the thin form is worth the higher cost and whether your use pattern makes an external battery useful.
Air accessories change the ownership cost
At launch in the U.S. in September 2025, Apple listed a MagSafe Battery at $99, a MagSafe Case at $49, a bumper at $39, a Crossbody Strap at $59 and a 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W maximum output at $39. Add only what you need; these are launch prices, not confirmed current prices. A case or battery can also reduce some of the slimness that makes Air distinctive.
iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max: for camera, video and sustained workloads
Both Pro models use the A19 Pro chip, an aluminum unibody design and an Apple-designed vapor chamber for thermal management. Apple says the chip and vapor chamber together enable up to 40% better sustained performance than the previous generation. The lineup has 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, ProMotion up to 120Hz, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield protection on the back. Colors are deep blue, cosmic orange and silver.

The defining camera difference is a trio of 48MP Fusion cameras: Main, Ultra Wide and Telephoto. Apple specifies 4x optical zoom at 100mm, 8x optical-quality zoom at 200mm and up to 40x digital zoom. The 18MP Center Stage front camera accompanies video tools including ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and genlock support. iOS 26: software behind several new features
iOS 26 arrived September 15, 2025. It brought the Liquid Glass design, Apple Intelligence improvements, Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and Phone, expanded visual intelligence, call and message screening, and changes to CarPlay, Apple Music, Maps and Wallet. Apple also introduced the Apple Games app, Adaptive Power Mode and new Photographic Styles including Bright. Hardware, language, region and local rules affect feature availability; consult Apple’s Apple Intelligence availability page for supported devices and languages.
Apple Watch Series 11: balanced health and fitness
Series 11 comes in 42mm and 46mm sizes, with aluminum or polished titanium configurations, and starts at $399 in the U.S. at launch. Apple specifies up to 24 hours of battery life; a 15-minute charge can provide up to eight hours, under Apple’s stated conditions. Aluminum display glass is claimed to have twice the scratch resistance of its predecessor. It adds 5G cellular connectivity, Sleep Score and hypertension notifications.
watchOS 26 adds Workout Buddy, wrist flick, Smart Stack hints, Live Translation in Messages, Hold Assist, Call Screening, Notes and new watch faces. Not every feature works on every watch or in every language and region. Apple says the feature analyzes optical heart-sensor data over 30-day periods. Its September 2025 announcement said regulatory clearance was expected and that notifications would be available on Series 9 and later and Ultra 2 and later with watchOS 26. Apple recommends that a person who receives a notification record blood pressure with a third-party cuff for seven days and share the results with a clinician. This is not a blood-pressure measurement or diagnosis. The cited announcement does not establish the feature’s current U.S. regulatory status or availability.

Apple Watch Ultra 3: outdoor focus and satellite communication
Ultra 3 starts at $799 in the U.S. at launch and comes in natural or black titanium. It has Apple’s largest Watch display to date, with a 1Hz always-on refresh rate, and 5G cellular. Apple rates battery life at up to 42 hours in ordinary use and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode; for outdoor workouts in Low Power Mode with full GPS and heart-rate readings, it specifies up to 20 hours. A 15-minute charge can provide up to 12 hours, according to Apple.
Its major distinction is two-way satellite communication: Emergency SOS, Messages and Find My location sharing via satellite. Apple announced satellite communication features as free for two years with Ultra 3; Emergency SOS via satellite did not require a cellular plan. Satellite functions are not a substitute for cellular coverage or a dedicated communicator in every situation. They depend on supported location and feature eligibility, a clear line of sight, battery and environmental conditions. Ultra 3 also includes the Series 11’s announced hypertension notification and Sleep Score features, plus a Waypoint face and an updated Workout app. Its size, cost and adventure features are excessive for many everyday-watch buyers.

SE 3 starts at $249 in the U.S. at launch and comes in 40mm or 44mm midnight and starlight aluminum. It uses the S10 chip, adds an Always-On display, fast charging and 5G cellular, and includes Sleep Score, wrist-temperature sensing, retrospective ovulation estimates, sleep-apnea notifications, Double Tap and wrist flick gestures, and on-device Siri.
Apple rates battery life at 18 hours; it says 15 minutes of charging provides up to eight hours of daily-use battery life and that the watch reaches about 80% in 45 minutes. SE 3 suits first-time buyers, families and people who want core safety and fitness features without premium materials or satellite functions. It is a weaker fit if longer battery life or rugged adventure features are the priority. See Apple’s SE 3 announcement. AirPods Pro 3 start at $249 in the U.S. at launch. Apple redesigned the earbuds to be smaller and includes five ear-tip sizes, including XXS. The earbuds are rated IP57 for sweat and water resistance. Apple claims up to twice the active noise cancellation of AirPods Pro 2 and four times that of the original AirPods Pro; these are Apple’s comparisons, not independent measurements.

Apple specifies up to eight hours of music playback with ANC enabled or up to 10 hours in Transparency mode. Heart-rate sensing works during workouts, with more than 50 workout types tracked through the Fitness app on iPhone. Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, Hearing Protection and Conversation Boost features are subject to regional and regulatory support; check Apple’s AirPods feature availability page.
Live Translation has prerequisites
Live Translation requires a supported AirPods model and firmware, an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 or later, supported device and Siri language settings, and availability in the user’s region. Apple initially listed English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish, with Italian, Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese planned for later in 2025. That launch announcement is not a current language list; confirm present support at Apple’s Apple Intelligence availability page. AirPods heart-rate sensing is a workout feature, not a general-purpose medical heart monitor.
Which product should you buy?
Choose an iPhone
- iPhone 17: the mainstream pick if you want the new display, camera improvements and 256GB base storage without paying for Pro-focused tools.
- iPhone Air: for buyers who value a thin titanium design more than camera breadth and want to accept its higher launch price and possible accessory needs.
- iPhone 17 Pro: for photographers, video creators and heavy users who will use the telephoto camera, production formats or sustained performance.
- iPhone 17 Pro Max: for the largest display and buyers prioritizing the Pro tier’s battery capacity; accept the larger form factor.
Choose an Apple Watch
- SE 3: a lower-cost entry point with Always-On display and fast charging.
- Series 11: a balanced everyday health-and-fitness watch with a 24-hour Apple-rated battery claim.
- Ultra 3: for outdoor users who value its longer stated battery life, robust feature set and satellite capabilities.

Choose AirPods
AirPods Pro 3 make the strongest case for iPhone users who want the new fit, Apple-claimed ANC improvement, workout heart-rate sensing and ecosystem features. Translation alone is a poor reason to buy until device, language and regional support are confirmed. Android users may not receive the same integration and feature set.
Compatibility and ownership checks before buying
eSIM and travel
Apple specified eSIM-only iPhone 17 models in Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In those markets, confirm that your carrier supports eSIM before buying, especially if you travel or change carriers often. Model configuration can vary elsewhere; verify the specific regional version rather than assuming physical SIM support.
Satellite, cellular and regional limits
Satellite features require supported regions and circumstances and cannot be treated as an always-available full connection. Cellular watch functions depend on carrier and plan eligibility; neither a cellular plan nor satellite support should be assumed to work identically worldwide.
