watchOS 11.4 was a small quality-of-life update released on April 1, 2025—not a major redesign. It added audible Sleep Wake Up alarms that can bypass Silent Mode, support for Matter-compatible robot vacuums in Apple Home, and a fix for an issue that could make switching watch faces unresponsive. In 2026, watchOS 11.4 is a historical release; install the newest watchOS version available for your Apple Watch rather than specifically seeking out 11.4.

Audible Sleep Wake Up alarms in Silent Mode
Normally, Silent Mode suppresses sounds on Apple Watch and relies on haptic alerts. watchOS 11.4 adds Break Through Silence, an option that lets the Sleep Wake Up alarm make an audible sound despite Silent Mode.

To enable it on the watch:
- Open the Sleep app.
- Scroll down and tap Wake Up.
- Tap Sound & Haptics.
- Turn on Break Through Silence.
Menu wording can vary with later software versions. This setting applies specifically to the Sleep Wake Up alarm; it should not be treated as a switch that makes every ordinary alarm, timer or notification audible.
The feature changes how Silent Mode affects that alarm, but Apple’s release note does not define every possible charging, sleep-tracking or watch-state condition. Test the alarm before relying on it for an important wake-up, particularly if the watch is charging overnight or used in an unusual setup. It may also be unsuitable in a shared bedroom or other quiet environment.
Matter-compatible robot vacuums in Apple Home
watchOS 11.4 lets Matter-compatible robot vacuums work with Apple Home. Depending on the vacuum, its Matter implementation and your Home configuration, you can:

- Use it in scenes and automations.
- Control it with Siri, including requests such as “Siri, clean the living room.”
Matter is a cross-platform smart-home standard. The update does not make every existing robot vacuum compatible with Apple Home. The vacuum must support the relevant Matter device category, and setup can also depend on household permissions, network configuration, a Home hub and regional availability.
Apple Home may expose fewer controls than the manufacturer’s own app. Start, stop and room-cleaning actions may be available while advanced cleaning modes, maps or other proprietary features are not. Room names and Siri behavior can also depend on how the vacuum and Home are configured, as well as language and country.
If a vacuum does not appear in Home, check its Matter compatibility and setup first. Other possibilities include an incomplete Matter pairing process, association with another smart-home account, missing Home infrastructure or a manufacturer implementation that does not expose the control you want. That situation is not automatically a watchOS defect.

Fix for unresponsive face selection
Apple also fixed an issue that could make face selection unresponsive when switching watch faces. If the problem continues after updating, confirm the installed watchOS version, restart the watch and try again. Since later watchOS 11 releases were issued, users should check for the newest compatible update instead of remaining on 11.4.

Which Apple Watch models support watchOS 11.4?
Contemporary release coverage listed these compatible models:
- Apple Watch Series 6 and later
- Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)
- All Apple Watch Ultra models
This is the historical watchOS 11.4 compatibility list. Do not substitute the compatibility requirements for current watchOS releases, which may be different.

These are Apple’s standard update requirements and paths. Because 11.4 has been superseded, your device may now offer a later compatible release instead.
Update using the paired iPhone
- Update the iPhone if an update is available.
- Charge the Apple Watch to at least 50 percent.
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi and keep it near the watch.
- Open the Watch app.
- Tap My Watch, then General and Software Update.
- Download and install the available update.
- Enter a passcode if prompted.
- Keep the watch on its charger until installation finishes and it restarts.
Apple advises not restarting either device or quitting the Watch app while the update is in progress. Installation may take several minutes or up to about an hour.
Update directly on the watch
- Connect the Apple Watch to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Tap Install if an update is available.
- Leave the watch on its charger until the process completes.
Apple says direct installation is available on Apple Watch models running watchOS 6 or later. Full guidance is available in Apple’s Apple Watch update instructions.

If the update will not install
- Confirm that the watch is properly connected to its charger.
- Restart the Apple Watch and paired iPhone.
- Try the update again.
- If it still will not start, open Watch > My Watch > General > Storage and delete the downloaded update file, then retry.
If beta software is installed, remove the beta profile and restart both devices before checking for an update again.
What watchOS 11.4 did not add
According to Apple’s documented release notes, watchOS 11.4 did not introduce a new watch-face collection, a major health feature, a new workout category, a broad redesign or an Apple Intelligence feature. Features from the larger watchOS 11 release should not be presented as additions from 11.4.
Is watchOS 11.4 worth installing?
At the time of release, it was a worthwhile maintenance update for compatible watches. The audible Sleep Wake Up alarm is useful if haptic alerts are not reliable enough for you, Matter support matters if you own a compatible robot vacuum, and the face-selection fix addresses a frustrating usability problem.

In 2026, the practical recommendation is simpler: install the latest compatible watchOS release offered for your watch. Do not buy an older Apple Watch solely to obtain watchOS 11.4, and do not assume that the update alone makes a non-Matter vacuum work with Apple Home.
