Facer 3.0 expanded the watch-face platform to Samsung’s Gear S2 and Gear S3, added support for several Android Wear watches, and introduced Color Matcher, which adapted the colors of a compatible face to an outfit photo. Announced by Little Labs on November 18, 2016, it was a broader platform and creator-tools update—not simply a catalog refresh. Its Tizen compatibility is now historical: Facer says new installations, updates, and technical support for Tizen watches are no longer available.
What Color Matcher did
Color Matcher was a customization option for themeable watch faces, not a tool for generating a new face or recoloring every design in Facer’s catalog. The announced workflow was simple: choose a themeable face, tap Customize, take a picture of your outfit, and let Facer apply a matching color scheme. The feature was intended to coordinate the face with what you were wearing.
Facer’s announcement did not explain the color-analysis method or promise exact color reproduction. It also did not specify camera requirements or describe manual fine-tuning, so Color Matcher is best understood as automatic color styling rather than precise garment recognition.

Watches supported at launch
Facer 3.0’s compatibility announcement covered Samsung’s Tizen watches and a set of Android Wear models. These are launch-era platform names and devices; the list is not a guide to current compatibility.

Platform support, a model’s ability to run Facer, and support for a particular feature are not necessarily the same thing. Facer gave the Gear S3 special attention, saying its faces could use the watch’s always-on mode with full-color and animated faces. That was a launch-era claim about the Gear S3 experience, not a promise that every face or feature behaved identically on every supported watch.
A larger update for watch-face creators
Facer Creator 3.0 extended creator support across Android Wear, Tizen, and Apple Watch. The release also highlighted a refreshed creator experience, tutorials, documentation, recipes for common watch components, and community features. This mattered because Facer was expanding both the audience for faces and the tools available to people who made them.

Little Labs also announced a standalone Facer Creator app for macOS. Its launch-era features included Touch Bar integration and gestures for manipulating Time Machine. Those details describe the Mac release at the time; they should not be read as confirmation of present-day availability or functionality.

The update organized faces into collections such as Essentials, Best for your Gear S3, Engineering Wonders, 1ok Sync Club, Themeables, and “30 for Facer 3.0.” The last was a December 2016 promotion: 30 premium faces for $3, available for three days according to Facer’s announcement. It was a limited launch deal, not a current price.

Why Facer 3.0 mattered in 2016
The biggest strategic change was Facer’s move into Samsung’s Tizen ecosystem with the Gear S2 and Gear S3. Alongside its Android Wear additions, Color Matcher gave users a distinctive way to personalize an existing face, while Creator improvements addressed the designers supplying the catalog.
At launch, Little Labs reported almost 1 million installs, 15,000 watch faces, and 6,000 designers, as well as millions of daily watch-face interactions. These were company-reported figures, not independently audited totals. They provide a snapshot of how Facer described its scale in 2016; they should not be compared directly with current marketing figures because the dates and measurement contexts differ.

What this means for watch owners today
Gear S2 and Gear S3 owners: Facer’s Tizen support is no longer available for new installations, updates, or technical support after Samsung ended support for Tizen watches and the Tizen Galaxy Store. Existing installations may continue to work, but access can depend on the device, region, account, and store availability. In particular, do not assume you can reinstall Facer after a reset.

Compatibility can depend on the watch model, Wear OS version, face format, and whether a creator has migrated a face. Facer also says Google Play installation changes affect older Wear OS versions: new installs are unavailable on Wear OS 5 and earlier in the circumstances it describes, and it recommends Wear OS 6 where a watch supports it. Its Wear OS compatibility FAQ explains how the Watch Face Format transition can affect legacy faces, complications, previews, and face switching.
