The original Google Pixel Watch received the redesigned Fitbit Workout interface in Google’s March 4, 2024 Pixel Feature Drop. The update brought larger text, brighter colors, clearer pace and heart-rate data, Pace Training, Heart Zone Training, and automatic workout start and stop for supported activities. It remains a 2024 software backport—not a new August 2026 release—and it does not make the first-generation watch feature-equivalent to newer Pixel Watch models.
Google’s announcement describes the official feature set; contemporaneous rollout reporting provides additional detail about the interface and installation.
What changed in the Workout app?
The redesign brings the first-generation watch closer to the Workout experience introduced on Pixel Watch 2. Google officially called out larger text, brighter colors, and more glanceable pace and heart-rate information. Rollout coverage described the following practical differences:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Key workout statistics are arranged vertically instead of being squeezed into the older two-row layout.
- You swipe to reach additional metrics rather than viewing every value on one crowded screen.
- A speedometer-like or semicircular heart-rate-zone indicator makes intensity easier to read while moving.
- Lock, pause, and end controls use larger pill-shaped buttons instead of the previous circular controls.
- Workout metrics and controls are separated more clearly, reducing accidental taps during exercise.

Which training features were added?
Pace Training
Pace Training lets you set a target running pace and receive feedback when you move outside the target range. Google says it uses the watch’s built-in GPS and motion sensors. Haptic feedback is available on the watch; voice cues require Pixel Buds Pro or compatible earbuds, so voice guidance should not be assumed to come from the watch speaker.

Google’s documentation has migrated some Fitbit instructions to Google Health terminology, so labels can differ by software version.

Heart Zone Training shows how long you spend in your personal heart-rate zones. Google says the zones are based on resting heart rate and fitness levels, with optional haptic notifications and voice alerts when you change zones. These are consumer fitness estimates, not clinical measurements or medical advice.

- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
Automatic workout start and stop
The update added automatic start and automatic stop alongside existing auto-pause for:
- Running
- Walking
- Elliptical
- Spinning
- Outdoor cycling
- Treadmill
- Rowing
Important treadmill exception: Google’s footnote says treadmill workouts support automatic start only. Do not expect the watch to automatically stop a treadmill session. Automatic detection can also start late, stop late, or miss an ambiguous activity; manually start a workout when exact timing matters.

- Google Pixel Watch has a beautiful circular, domed design and new experience with Wear OS by Google, so it’s easy to get help at a glance
- Stay on top of activity, calories burned, and more with Fitbit activity tracking
- Track your heart rate and get insight into your sleep
- Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
- Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist
Fitbit Relax
Google’s announcement also lists the Fitbit Relax breathing app for the first-generation Pixel Watch. Early rollout reports said some users did not see Relax immediately, indicating a rollout or availability discrepancy. The safest interpretation is that Google announced it as part of the feature drop, but availability was not necessarily simultaneous for every watch.
How to install the update on a first-generation Pixel Watch
The redesigned interface was reported as arriving through Fitbit 3.19 for Wear OS via the watch’s on-device Play Store in March 2024. That version number identifies the historical rollout; it is not a claim about the current Fitbit or Google Health version in 2026.
Best Value
- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
- On the first-generation Pixel Watch, open the Play Store.
- Check for pending updates to Fitbit or the corresponding Google Health components shown on your watch.
- Install the available update.
- Restart the watch.
- Open the Workout or Exercise app and check for the new vertical, swipeable layout.
Google rolled the March Feature Drop out over several weeks beginning March 4, 2024, so users did not necessarily receive it on the same day or in every region. If the watch is already fully updated, there may be no separate Fitbit 3.19 package left to install.
If the new interface does not appear
Try these steps before considering a reset:
- Connect the watch to Wi-Fi or establish a reliable connection to the paired phone.
- Open the on-watch Play Store and check for pending app updates.
- Install any available Fitbit, Google Health, or system updates.
- Make sure the watch has adequate battery and storage.
- Restart the watch, then reopen Workout or Exercise.
- If necessary, restart both the watch and the paired phone and check again.
- Confirm that the device is actually the first-generation Pixel Watch, not another Wear OS watch using a Fitbit app.
A factory reset should be a last resort because it requires re-pairing and restoring the watch. The restart requirement was specifically noted in contemporaneous rollout coverage; the other steps are practical troubleshooting rather than a published Google recovery procedure.
What this update does not add
This is a software improvement, not a hardware upgrade. It does not provide the sensors, battery capacity, performance, or complete workout catalog of later watches. Google’s current Pixel Watch support documentation says Pixel Watch 2, 3, and 4 have additional workout modes unavailable on the original model.

| Question | What the March 2024 update provides |
|---|---|
| Workout interface | Redesigned, larger, brighter and easier to scan, with swipeable metrics |
| Training tools | Pace Training and Heart Zone Training |
| Automatic detection | Auto-start and auto-stop for listed activities; treadmill is auto-start only |
| Hardware parity | Not provided; newer Pixel Watch generations retain additional workout modes |
Should you upgrade?
For an owner of a functioning first-generation Pixel Watch, the backport is substantial enough that buying a newer watch solely for the redesigned Workout screen is difficult to justify. Runners and cyclists gain the most from pace targets, zone feedback, and clearer live statistics; anyone who regularly forgets to start or stop a session benefits from automatic detection.
Upgrade decisions should instead be based on hardware, battery life, sensors, support horizon, and workout modes that remain exclusive to newer generations. The March 2024 update narrows the software gap, but it does not remove that hardware boundary.
