The claim is substantially true, but the headline needs important corrections. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Fitbit LLC agreed to a $12.25 million civil penalty over allegations that it did not promptly report a serious overheating hazard in its Fitbit Ionic smartwatch. The 2022 recall cited 78 reported burn injuries in the United States and 40 additional reported burn injuries internationally.
The payment was a civil penalty owed to the U.S. government—not a $12.25 million compensation fund for injured owners. The Ionic was recalled in 2022, and owners should not wear or charge one.

What happened with the Fitbit Ionic?
The Fitbit Ionic was a smartwatch with a lithium-ion battery that could overheat while being worn. Because the watch sat directly against the wrist or arm, an overheating battery created a particularly serious burn risk.

Fitbit issued a firmware update in early 2020 intended to mitigate potential battery overheating, but reports of burns continued. The agency alleged that Fitbit had information reasonably supporting the conclusion that the Ionic posed a substantial product hazard but did not promptly notify the CPSC as required under Section 15(b) of the Consumer Product Safety Act.

The CPSC announced the recall on March 2, 2022. Fitbit later agreed to the proposed $12.25 million civil penalty announced on January 23, 2025. The settlement materials say Fitbit did not admit liability or a legal violation.

How many people were injured?
The figures should be stated carefully. “Over 70 people” refers only to the reported U.S. burn injuries and does not describe a single confirmed worldwide victim total.

These are government-reported incident figures, not necessarily a complete epidemiological count of everyone who may have been injured. The CPSC recall notice also said about one million Ionic watches had been sold in the United States and approximately 693,000 internationally.

Why was Fitbit penalized?
The central enforcement issue was allegedly delayed reporting—not simply the existence of a defective battery.
The CPSC alleged that Fitbit:
- received repeated reports of Ionic batteries overheating;
- received reports of burn injuries;
- attempted a firmware mitigation;
- continued receiving reports after that update; and
- failed to immediately report information about the serious product hazard to the CPSC.
The proposed settlement also required improvements to Fitbit’s compliance program, including internal reporting controls, employee training, management oversight, record retention, and an internal audit.
Under the settlement language, Fitbit agreed to pay the civil penalty without admitting that it violated the law. The CPSC’s January 2025 announcement described the agreement as provisionally accepted and subject to public comment. The materials used for this article do not independently establish a later final order or confirm that payment was completed, so it is more precise to say Fitbit agreed to the penalty rather than simply saying it “paid a fine.”

Which Fitbit watches were recalled?
This recall covered the Fitbit Ionic only. It did not apply to every Fitbit smartwatch, fitness tracker, or later Google-branded wearable.
The affected model number was FB503, printed on the back of the watch near the band attachment. Recalled variants included:
- FB503CPBU: slate blue and burnt orange
- FB503GYBK: charcoal and smoke gray
- FB503WTGY: blue gray and silver gray
- FB503WTNV: Adidas edition, ink blue and silver gray
Do not assume that a Charge, Versa, Sense, Inspire, or another Fitbit model is part of this specific Ionic recall. Separate safety notices involving other models should not be conflated with this enforcement matter.

- Stop wearing the watch immediately.
- Do not charge it, even to check whether it still works. A nonfunctional or damaged unit may still present a battery hazard.
- Check the back for model number FB503 and compare it with the recall information.
- Use the official Fitbit or CPSC recall process to determine whether a refund or other remedy remains available.
- Do not sell, donate, or give away the watch. Passing a recalled product to another person creates the same safety risk.
The original recall offered a $299 refund after Fitbit received the returned watch, along with a discount code for selected Fitbit products subject to the program’s terms and availability. Some replacement-product discount offers reportedly ended on October 31, 2023, so owners should not assume that every original offer remains active. Check the current official recall channel rather than relying on old support posts.

If an Ionic has overheated, smoked, swollen, ignited, or caused a burn, preserve the device and related records if it can be done safely. A serious burn should be assessed by a medical professional. Consumers can also report a dangerous product or injury through SaferProducts.gov.
Does the $12.25 million go to burn victims?
No. The $12.25 million figure refers to a civil penalty payable to the United States. The settlement documents do not describe it as a fund to be divided among the 78 U.S. burn victims or the 40 additional international injury reports.
That payment is separate from the recall remedy. The $299 refund was tied to returning an affected Ionic; it was not the same thing as the civil penalty and did not turn the penalty into individual injury compensation.
What the headline gets wrong
- “Fitbit was fined $12 million”: the exact announced amount was $12.25 million, and the available CPSC material described the agreement as provisionally accepted.
- “Fitbit’s smartwatch burned over 70 people”: the specific product was the Ionic, and the recall cited 78 reported U.S. burn injuries plus 40 additional international burn injuries.
- “Fitbit paid victims”: the civil penalty was owed to the U.S. government, not distributed as a victim compensation fund.
- “All Fitbit watches are unsafe”: unsupported. This recall concerned the Ionic model.
- “The firmware update fixed the problem”: the CPSC said burn reports continued after the update.
- “Fitbit admitted wrongdoing”: the settlement expressly stated that Fitbit did not admit liability or a legal violation.
Why the reporting issue matters
Product-safety enforcement is not limited to whether a company eventually recalls a product. Manufacturers are expected to track incident information and alert regulators when evidence indicates that a product may present a substantial hazard.

In this case, the CPSC’s allegations focused on the time between Fitbit receiving overheating and burn reports and notifying the agency. A software update may reduce the likelihood of a battery problem, but it does not automatically eliminate a hardware-related risk—especially when reports of injuries continue.
For buyers of used or refurbished wearables, the Ionic case is also a reminder to check recall databases before charging or reselling an older device. A low price does not make a recalled battery-powered product safe.
