The Fitbit app is now Google Health. The redesign began rolling out on May 19, 2026, replacing Fitbit’s old navigation with four tabs—Today, Fitness, Sleep and Health. Follow-up updates in versions 5.02 and 5.03 then restored Hourly Activity, expanded the available metric tiles and improved customization on Android and iOS.

This is an app redesign, not a reason by itself to buy a new Fitbit. Existing users should update the app, expect some platform and account differences, and migrate from a legacy Fitbit account to a Google Account if prompted.

What changed in the Fitbit app?

Google has rebranded and transitioned the Fitbit app into Google Health. The underlying application remains the same Google-owned app rather than a completely separate download; Google Play lists it as Google Health (Fitbit). The transition began rolling out on May 19, 2026.

The redesign has three connected parts:

  • A new identity: the Fitbit app is now presented as Google Health.
  • New navigation: the main interface is divided into Today, Fitness, Sleep and Health.
  • Customizable dashboards: users can choose which metrics appear prominently in Today and Health.

Google’s goal is to put commonly used health information closer to the surface instead of making users search through separate Fitbit screens. The result is more flexible, but longtime Fitbit users may need to relearn where familiar information lives.

Google’s announcement of Google Health describes the transition and the new dashboard structure.

The four Google Health tabs

Tab What it is for
Today A daily overview containing focus metrics, activity information and personalized guidance.
Fitness Workouts, fitness plans and activity-related information.
Sleep Sleep duration, stages, schedules, naps and sleep trends.
Health Key health metrics, vitals and related health information.

Today is intended to be the quick daily summary. Health is the broader home for health metrics. Because both areas can contain customizable tiles, users can create a compact overview rather than relying on Google’s default ordering.

Which metrics can be added?

The July 2026 v5.03 update expanded the metric tiles available in Today. Reported additions included:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Heart-rate variability
  • Breathing rate
  • Oxygen saturation (SpO2)
  • Resting heart rate
  • Skin-temperature variation
  • Blood glucose
  • Mindful days
  • Mindful minutes
  • Resilience
  • Protein intake
  • Fat intake
  • Carbohydrate intake
  • Friend leaderboard

These metrics are also available through the Health tab according to the reported update notes. That does not mean every user will see every tile. Availability can depend on the Fitbit or Pixel Watch model, connected apps, country, permissions, account state and whether the relevant data has actually been recorded.

Some values are measured by a wearable, while others may be imported from another app, manually logged or calculated from available data. A missing tile therefore does not automatically mean that historical information or a sensor has been deleted.

Android versus iPhone: are the features identical?

No. The redesign is available on both platforms, but feature parity has been phased. Android received some controls first, while later updates brought several changes to iPhone.

Feature Android iOS
Four-tab Google Health layout Available, rollout-dependent Available, rollout-dependent
Reordering Health key metrics Added earlier in v5.02 Added later as part of the iOS catch-up
Hourly Activity restoration Rolled out in the June update Rolled out across Android and iOS
Nap-related improvements Android first Added in a subsequent update
Expanded Today metric tiles Added with v5.03 Added with v5.03

The June v5.02 rollout made Android metric reordering easier and introduced other sleep and activity refinements. The July v5.03 update expanded the Today tile selection and brought several earlier Android changes to iOS. Store availability and account-level rollouts can still vary, so two people using the same operating system may not see identical controls on the same day.

How to customize Today and Health

Customize Today

  1. Open Google Health, formerly the Fitbit app.
  2. Open the Today tab.
  3. Tap the dashboard’s Customize or pencil control.
  4. Add or remove the available metric tiles.
  5. Reorder the tiles to put your most important information first.
  6. Save the changes or exit customization.

Reorder Health metrics on Android

  1. Open Health.
  2. Tap Customize.
  3. Long-press the metric chart you want to move.
  4. Drag it to the desired position.

This drag-and-drop path was reported for the Android v5.02 rollout. Google can change labels and control placement in later releases, so the exact wording may differ.

What to do if Customize is missing

  • Update Google Health from Google Play or the App Store.
  • Confirm that the app is version 5.0 or later.
  • Force-close and reopen the app after updating.
  • Check whether the staged rollout has reached your account.
  • Verify that your wearable or connected app supplies the metric.
  • Review Health Connect permissions on Android or Apple Health permissions on iPhone.

Google says the app version can be checked from Today → profile picture → Help. Its support documentation states that Google Health and Google Health Coach require version 5.0 or later.

What happened to familiar Fitbit features?

The redesign has involved a mixture of moved, restored and expanded features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hourly Activity returned

Hourly Activity returned to Today and Health in the June v5.02 update. Its restoration matters because the feature was familiar to long-term Fitbit users and is useful for checking movement throughout the day rather than looking only at total steps or exercise.

  • Enhance activity: Built-in GPS and workout intensity map, Daily Readiness Score, Active Zone Minutes, all-day activity tracking and 24/7 heart rate, 40+ exercise modes and automatic exercise tracking, water resistant to 50 meters
  • Designed for all-day wear: On-wrist Bluetooth calls, texts and phone notifications[5], customizable clock faces, Amazon Alexa built-in[6], Google Wallet & Maps, 6+ day battery[7]

Sleep and naps changed

Sleep-session editing and deletion were improved, and naps became more visible within sleep information. Reported changes also indicated that naps longer than 20 minutes count toward the 24-hour sleep total, while Today continues to emphasize the primary sleep session.

The exact presentation can depend on the app version and recorded sleep data. If a nap does not appear, check that the wearable synced successfully and that the sleep session meets Google’s detection requirements.

More information is grouped under broader categories

Some familiar Fitbit information has moved rather than vanished. Activity-related information is more likely to appear under Fitness, sleep information under Sleep, and broader vitals under Health. The redesign also gives greater prominence to nutrition, mindfulness, cycle-health information, connected-app data and wellness trends.

Account, phone and connection requirements

Google Account migration

A Google Account is required for Google Health. Users who still use a legacy Fitbit account must move to a Google Account to access the new Google Health experience. Google says existing user data is intended to transition automatically during the migration, but the account change can alter the sign-in workflow and the way familiar settings are reached.

Read Google’s Google Health account and compatibility guidance before migrating if you have more than one Google or Fitbit account.

Minimum phone software

  • Android 11 or later
  • iOS 16.4 or later
  • Google Health app version 5.0 or later

The app is available on Android and iOS, but Google Health is a phone app rather than a directly installed app for third-party watches or trackers. A compatible Fitbit or Pixel Watch is needed for wearable synchronization.

Health Connect and Apple Health

On Android, Health Connect can share supported information between Google Health and other health or fitness apps. On iPhone, Apple Health can serve as an integration path for supported data types. These services are not replacements for the Google Health dashboard, and they do not guarantee complete two-way synchronization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google warns that third-party sources may provide only selected data types. Some calculations, including sleep score and Cardio Load, may rely on first-party data and therefore may not be reproduced from imported information alone. Check Google’s data-sharing guidance for current source and permission limitations.

What is free and what requires Google Health Premium?

The dashboard redesign should not automatically be treated as a Premium-only feature. The app, core tracking and dashboard organization are distinct from the subscription’s coaching features.

Google Health Premium is aimed at users who want Google Health Coach, Gemini-powered personalized fitness, sleep and health coaching, adaptive plans and deeper personalized guidance. The official product page is Google Health Premium.

For someone who only wants to move Heart-rate variability, SpO2 or nutrition tiles higher on the screen, Premium is unlikely to be necessary. Premium becomes more relevant if the reader specifically wants AI coaching or personalized plans. Feature availability can vary by country, device and account, so the subscription page should be checked before purchase.

Google’s health and coaching features are not intended to diagnose or treat medical conditions. Medical-record and coaching tools should not be treated as a substitute for professional medical care or clinical monitoring.

Troubleshooting the redesigned interface

The app still looks like old Fitbit

Possible explanations include an incomplete staged rollout, an unapplied store update, an unsupported phone operating system or a legacy account state. Update the app, confirm the phone meets the minimum requirements, restart the app and check again later. The transition was not delivered as one simultaneous switch for every account.

A Health or Today tile is missing

Check these items in order:

  1. Confirm the app version.
  2. Check whether the wearable measures the metric.
  3. Verify Health Connect or Apple Health permissions.
  4. Confirm that the metric is available in your country.
  5. Check whether a third-party app is actually exporting that data type.
  6. Allow enough recent data to accumulate for a calculation.
  7. Check whether the feature is Premium-only or tied to a supported device.

Android and iPhone show different options

This can be expected during a phased rollout. Android received the easier Health metric reordering interaction in v5.02, while iOS received several related improvements later in v5.03. Different app versions, account rollouts and permissions can also produce different screens.

Data imported from another app is absent

On Android, review Health Connect’s read and write permissions and confirm synchronization in the source app. On iPhone, verify Apple Health permissions and check that the source app is writing the relevant data category. A source may export steps but not sleep stages, or nutrition totals but not the underlying details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A number differs from another health app

Different apps can calculate the same-sounding metric from different inputs. Google notes that values may differ because platforms receive different data or apply different calculations. A discrepancy is not automatically evidence that one app is wrong.

Before troubleshooting, screenshot important dashboard arrangements and note which device and account supplied each metric. That makes it easier to distinguish a layout change from a synchronization or data-source problem.

Does Google Health replace Apple Health or Health Connect?

No. Google Health is becoming Google’s central Fitbit and wellness interface, while Health Connect and Apple Health remain integration layers for supported information.

  • Apple Health: a strong fit for iPhone owners who want Fitbit data alongside Apple Watch and other iOS health sources.
  • Health Connect: useful for Android users combining Google Health with apps such as MyFitnessPal, Strava or Samsung Health.
  • Garmin Connect: generally more suitable for users prioritizing structured training, GPS activities and endurance features.
  • Oura: more focused on sleep, recovery and readiness through a ring form factor.
  • Whoop: oriented toward subscription-based recovery and training, rather than a conventional screen-equipped Fitbit experience.

These are different ecosystems, not directly interchangeable dashboards. Choose based on the data sources, wearable form factor, training depth and subscription model you actually need.

Verdict

Google Health is a substantial Fitbit interface transition rather than a small Health Metrics refresh. The four-tab layout is easier to understand, and customizable Today and Health dashboards give active users faster access to the statistics they care about. The June and July updates also addressed important omissions by restoring Hourly Activity, improving sleep and nap handling, and expanding the metric tile selection.

The trade-off is a disrupted workflow for longtime Fitbit users. Android and iOS are not guaranteed to match at the same time, and the presence of a tile still depends on the wearable, permissions, country, account, data source and subscription status. Update the existing app first; buying a new Fitbit is not required merely to use the redesigned interface.
