The Fitbit Charge 6 launched in the U.S. at $159.95 as a compact fitness tracker with built-in GPS, more than 40 exercise modes, ECG and Google services including Wallet and Maps. That is its original list price, not a guarantee of today’s best price: Google Store listings have also shown it for $99.95, so check the current listing before buying. It is best suited to people who want health and activity tracking in a slim band—not a full smartwatch—and its current setup runs through the Google Health app.
What the Charge 6 is—and when it launched
Google announced the Fitbit Charge 6 on September 28, 2023. Its U.S. launch price was $159.95, and it was offered in Obsidian with black aluminum, Porcelain with silver aluminum, and Coral with champagne-gold aluminum. The announcement added Google Maps, Google Wallet and YouTube Music controls, plus a haptic side button to make navigation easier than on the buttonless Charge 5. The Charge 6 remains a tracker rather than a full smartwatch. It can show notifications and run selected wrist-based functions, but it is not a replacement for a watch built around a broad app library, calls or standalone media playback.
Fitness tracking: broad coverage, not specialist sports analytics
The tracker supports more than 40 exercise types, including walking, running, cycling, HIIT, rowing and strength training. It records everyday activity such as steps, distance, calories and active minutes, and provides heart-rate zones, Active Zone Minutes, workout summaries and reminders to move. SmartTrack can automatically record certain activities that last at least 15 minutes, but manually starting a workout is still the better choice when you want a deliberate workout record. Active Zone Minutes give two minutes of credit for each minute in vigorous or peak heart-rate zones. Zones are personalized using factors that include age and fitness level. The Charge 6 can also estimate Cardio Fitness Level (VO2 max) and show workout intensity maps. These tools are useful for general fitness context, but having a mode for a sport does not mean it provides the training load, recovery analysis or sport-specific metrics of a dedicated performance watch.
Google said at launch that the Charge 6 had its most accurate heart-rate tracking yet on a Fitbit tracker, using a machine-learning algorithm derived from Pixel Watch work. That is a manufacturer comparison, not a guarantee of accuracy for every person or activity. Fit, skin contact, movement, wrist position, physiology and workout intensity can all affect readings.
Built-in GPS, with a phone-assisted option
Yes, the Charge 6 has its own GPS and GLONASS sensors, so it can record a route, pace and distance without you carrying a phone. However, its Dynamic GPS feature may use a nearby phone’s GPS to preserve tracker battery. “Built-in GPS” therefore does not mean every workout uses the tracker’s GPS hardware. Google’s GPS guidance describes the behavior.

GPS workouts can use substantially more power than ordinary tracking. If a workout will not acquire GPS, sync first, move away from buildings or indoor obstructions, check phone location permissions if using the phone, and allow more time outdoors. Restarting the tracker is a reasonable next step if the problem keeps recurring.
Health, sleep and stress features
Charge 6 tracks 24/7 heart rate, resting heart rate, heart-rate variability, breathing rate, sleep duration and stages, and a Sleep Score. It can estimate blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) and measure skin-temperature variation during sleep. Its EDA Scan feature offers a stress-related measurement, and the tracker supports high- and low-heart-rate notifications and irregular-rhythm notifications. Availability and requirements can vary by country, phone and feature; some enhanced analysis may also depend on a subscription.

The ECG app can take a reading that assesses heart rhythm for signs of atrial fibrillation or irregularity in supported markets. It is not a diagnosis or a substitute for medical evaluation. ECG availability, eligibility and regulatory approval vary by country. If a reading or symptom concerns you, follow the app’s guidance and contact a clinician; do not use the tracker to rule out a medical problem. Google’s ECG guidance covers availability and use.
Heart rate on compatible gym equipment
The Charge 6 can broadcast real-time heart rate to compatible Bluetooth Heart Rate Profile equipment and apps. Google’s tested list includes Peloton equipment and app, Concept2 (with current firmware), Echelon, Hydrow, iFIT/NordicTrack, Matrix Fitness, Schwinn Fitness, Spinning, Strava, Tonal, Wahoo and Zwift. The current support list says the Charge 6 is not compatible with Garmin, Life Fitness or Technogym for this feature. Equipment models, firmware and app updates can affect compatibility; check Google’s current compatibility page rather than assuming any Bluetooth machine will work.
To connect, swipe down from the clock face, tap HR on equipment, start pairing on the machine or app, approve sharing on the tracker when prompted, then tap Start. If it fails, check the tested list and firmware, confirm the machine supports the Bluetooth heart-rate profile, disconnect any competing pairing, and approve the share prompt on the band.
Google Maps, Wallet and YouTube Music
- Google Maps: Turn-by-turn directions appear on the tracker, but require a compatible phone connection. It is not an independent mapping device, and availability varies by country and language.
- Google Wallet: Supports contactless payments and, in some places, transit use. Whether it works depends on country, supported cards and banks, transit systems, and account and phone setup. Verify local support before relying on it.
- YouTube Music: The Charge 6 acts as a remote control for music playing on a nearby phone; it is not a standalone music player. Launch disclosures required a compatible phone within Bluetooth range and a paid YouTube Music Premium subscription. Google’s U.S. product information also notes limited non-Premium availability in Canada and the United States, so check the current terms for your location.
These integrations make the band more useful for some Google users, but they do not turn it into a phone-independent smartwatch. Google Account setup and a compatible phone are part of the experience.
Size, water resistance and battery
The U.S. Google Store specifications list dimensions of 36.73 × 23.09 × 11.20 mm and a weight of about 30 g. The tracker has a color touchscreen, haptic side button, NFC, 5ATM water resistance and sensors for GPS, ECG, EDA and SpO2. See the official specifications for the full hardware list.

Google rates battery life at up to seven days. Treat that as a best-case estimate, not a promise: GPS workouts, always-on display and SpO2 use can shorten time between charges. Google says its estimate used pre-production hardware and software tested in California in mid-2023.

Setup and the 2026 Google Health change
In 2026, the Fitbit app was renamed the Google Health app, and Fitbit Premium became Google Health Premium, effective May 19. Current Charge 6 setup and syncing use the Google Health app; older instructions may still call it the Fitbit app. You need a Google Account and internet access to set it up and sync it. People still using an older Fitbit login may need to migrate that account to Google. Google’s transition information explains the change.
Basic tracking does not require a paid subscription. Google Health Premium is optional, but some deeper insights, coaching and workouts may be subscription-dependent. Eligible new or returning Google Account users may receive a three-month trial after updating to the Google Health app; eligibility and availability vary. Google does not provide one stable price for every country and checkout context in the cited support information, so check the price shown for your account before subscribing. In the European Economic Area, installation of third-party Fitbit apps and clock faces was removed in June 2024 for regulatory reasons. If those additions are central to your buying decision, review Google’s EEA limitations before choosing the Charge 6.
Who should consider it?

At around $100, the Charge 6 is a more compelling compact tracker if its feature set suits you. At its original $159.95 U.S. list price, compare it carefully with Garmin fitness devices for training focus, Apple Watch for iPhone smartwatch use, Samsung wearables for a broader Android watch experience, and Google’s Pixel Watch for fuller Google smartwatch functionality. Those alternatives serve different needs; none should be treated as a like-for-like tracker.
Check the Google Store listing for the current price, since a past list price or surfaced discount does not establish what you will pay today.
