Fitbit Labs was testing three different health features—not launching three finished medical tools. Announced on May 12, 2025, the experiments included a Gemini-powered Medical record navigator, a conversational Symptom checker, and Unusual trends, which compared wearable measurements with a user’s personal baseline. Unusual trends later became an IRB-approved research study, while Google’s 2026 plans moved toward linking medical records with Fitbit’s Personal Health Coach.
These features may help users understand information or notice changes, but they are not medical devices, diagnostic services, or substitutes for professional care.
What Fitbit Labs announced in May 2025
Fitbit’s announcement covered three experiments with different inputs, outputs and risks. They were presented as Labs capabilities and research opportunities, so availability could depend on factors such as eligibility, geography, device, operating system, account and app version.

The original announcement described the Medical record navigator as the first capability, with a waitlist and expected availability later that week. Fitbit said the Symptom checker and Unusual trends would follow in the subsequent weeks. That wording did not mean all three became permanent, universally available Fitbit features.

Medical record navigator: summarizing uploaded lab reports
The Medical record navigator was described as an Android-based research experiment. Users could securely upload recent laboratory reports, including PDFs and images. Gemini would extract information from those documents, present the results in more accessible language and offer educational resources.
The intended purpose was to help users understand terminology and prepare for additional research or a conversation with a clinician. It was not intended to diagnose a condition, interpret every result in clinical context or recommend treatment.

A report may not include the patient’s full medical history, symptoms, medications, age, pregnancy status or the clinician’s interpretation. Poor image quality, missing pages, unusual formatting and handwritten notes can also affect document extraction.
Anyone checking a result through an experimental summary should compare it with the original report. An abnormal result, persistent symptom or confusing explanation should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional. Do not stop medication or change treatment because of an AI-generated summary.
Symptom checker: possible explanations, not a diagnosis
The Symptom checker was designed for natural-language conversations. A user could describe symptoms, answer follow-up questions and receive possible reasons for those symptoms.

This makes it different from the Medical record navigator: the navigator focused on explaining uploaded documents, while the Symptom checker focused on conversational symptom exploration. Fitbit positioned the latter as an initial information tool, not a diagnostic service.

Possible explanations from a chatbot are not proof of the underlying cause. The system may lack essential context, ask the wrong follow-up question or produce incomplete, outdated, inaccurate or misleading information. It should never be used to decide whether emergency care is necessary. A missing warning is also not evidence that nothing is wrong.
Unusual trends: watching a personal wearable-data baseline
Unusual trends attempted to learn what was normal for an individual user instead of relying only on population averages. Fitbit specifically mentioned metrics including:
- Resting heart rate
- Heart-rate variability
- Sleeping breathing rate
If a metric moved away from the established personal range, the experiment could notify the user. The practical goal was awareness: a change might prompt someone to consider recent stress, illness, disrupted sleep or another contextual factor.
What “personal baseline” means
A personal baseline is a pattern or range derived from someone’s own historical wearable data. It is not the same as a clinical reference range.
For example, a reading can be unusual for one person without being medically dangerous. Conversely, a reading can remain within someone’s usual wearable pattern even when a health problem is present. Baselines may also shift because of travel, poor sleep, stress, alcohol, exercise, illness, medication, device fit, missing sensor data or wearing the device less consistently.

Users with sparse or inconsistent data may receive less meaningful results. “Unusual” does not mean “dangerous,” and “normal” does not mean “healthy.”
What happened after the original announcement?
| Date | Development |
|---|---|
| May 12, 2025 | Fitbit announced Medical record navigator, Symptom checker and Unusual trends as Labs experiments. |
| November 12, 2025 | Fitbit Community announced that Unusual trends was rolling out as an IRB-approved research study. |
| March 17, 2026 | Google announced a broader plan to link medical records with Fitbit’s Personal Health Coach for U.S. Public Preview users. |
The November rollout reinforced the personal-baseline concept: the study looked for measurements moving outside an established range. It did not turn Unusual trends into a clinical alert system or a disease detector. Fitbit’s announcement is available through the Fitbit Community.
How the 2026 Personal Health Coach direction differs
Google’s March 2026 announcement described a broader medical-record integration rather than simply renaming the 2025 Medical record navigator. In the U.S. Public Preview, eligible Fitbit users could link medical records that may include lab results, medications and visit history to Fitbit’s Personal Health Coach.
Google said the coach could use that information alongside wearable data, such as by summarizing cholesterol laboratory results and providing personalized wellness information based on medical history and device data. The announcement described this as a later evolution of the same general idea: combining clinical information with wearable trends.
It should not be conflated with the original upload-and-summary experiment. Availability, geography and preview status matter: Google specifically referred to U.S. Public Preview users, with availability beginning the month after the March announcement. Google also said Fitbit is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, prevent or monitor disease. Read the announcement at Google’s official blog.

Joining a Lab is not equivalent to using an ordinary, finalized app feature. Google’s Google Health Labs documentation says data entered as part of a Lab may be used to improve the capability and future health features.
Specific daily health metrics from Fitbit or Pixel devices may be used to identify potential unusual trends for research. Feedback and survey responses may be treated as Lab Data; Google says identifiable Lab Data such as this is automatically deleted six months after a Lab ends. The documentation also says enrollment history is retained unless the user deletes their Fitbit account and service.

Those statements do not answer every privacy question for every experiment. Before uploading medical documents, review the specific study consent form and privacy notice, particularly details about storage, research use, profile inclusion, sharing and the rules that apply in your jurisdiction. “Securely upload” should not be read as a promise that data is handled in every respect like a medical provider’s records.

Should you participate?
Labs may appeal to users who want easier-to-read explanations of technical lab terminology, a way to view wearable trends alongside health information or an opportunity to influence future Fitbit features.
Caution is appropriate if an alert could cause significant anxiety, if you are likely to treat an AI explanation as a diagnosis or if you are uncomfortable providing medical documents for product research. Experimental access can be withdrawn, outputs can change and results can be wrong.
For Unusual trends, treat an alert as a prompt to consider context—not as proof of illness. Treat the absence of an alert as non-evidence. For medical documents and symptoms, use the original report and qualified clinical advice as the authority.

The bottom line
Fitbit Labs began as three separate experiments: document understanding, conversational symptom exploration and personal-baseline trend monitoring. The later Unusual trends study and the 2026 Personal Health Coach announcement show Google continuing toward deeper connections between Fitbit data and medical information, but neither development makes the system a diagnostic or treatment tool.
The sensible use is limited and practical: learn what an experimental feature is designed to show, read its consent terms, verify important information against original records and involve a healthcare professional whenever symptoms or abnormal results matter.
