If your Fitbit’s stats are stale, its phone-disconnected icon is showing, or a manual sync fails, start with the app and Bluetooth—not a factory reset. Most sync problems come from a temporary connection, phone permissions, background restrictions, or an old pairing. Try the seven fixes below in order; the first steps should not erase data.
Google’s current support pages call the mobile app the Google Health app, though you may still see Fitbit branding or the older name “Fitbit app.” Labels and menus can vary by phone, operating-system version, and app rollout.
Before you start: what syncing needs
For a Fitbit to sync, it needs power, Bluetooth on the phone, and a nearby connection. The Fitbit/Google Health app also needs the relevant permissions and, for service updates, an internet connection over Wi-Fi or cellular data. Background access matters for automatic syncing, notifications, connected GPS, and firmware updates; opening the app may still allow a manual sync if background activity is restricted.
Keep the Fitbit within a few feet of the phone while troubleshooting—Google recommends about 2–3 feet for reconnection and updates. If the device has been disconnected, it may still hold activity that has not reached your account. Give it a chance to sync before considering any erase or factory reset.

1. Open the app and manually sync
- Bring the Fitbit close to your phone.
- Open the Fitbit/Google Health app and select your device.
- On the device screen, pull down until a refresh or progress indicator appears.
- Wait for the sync to finish, then check whether recent steps, sleep, heart-rate data, or the correct time appear.
If an error appears, note its exact wording before moving on. For current manual-sync instructions, see Google’s sync troubleshooting guide.
2. Force-close the app and reset Bluetooth
- Force-close the Fitbit/Google Health app.
- In your phone’s system settings, switch Bluetooth off and wait at least 10 seconds.
- Switch Bluetooth back on, reopen the app, and try a manual sync.
This clears a temporary connection state without removing the Fitbit from your account. Menu names vary by phone. Don’t make repeated taps on the Fitbit in the phone’s Bluetooth list your main sync method: the app is the normal place to manage and sync it. See Google’s reconnection steps.
3. Restart the Fitbit and your phone
- Restart the Fitbit using the instructions for its specific model.
- Wait for its clock face or normal home screen to return.
- Restart your phone, reopen the app, and try syncing again.
The restart procedure differs among Charge, Inspire, Versa, Sense, and other models; use the official model-specific guidance rather than trying a button combination from another device. A normal restart is not a factory reset. Avoid options named “Erase,” “Factory reset,” or “Clear user data” at this stage.

4. Let the app use Bluetooth, data, and background activity
If syncing works only while the app is open, or stops again after a while, phone restrictions may be suspending it. Exact paths and labels differ by manufacturer and software version.
On Android
- In Settings, open Apps, select Google Health or Fitbit, then look for Mobile data & Wi-Fi. Allow background data and, if offered, unrestricted mobile data.
- Under App battery usage or the equivalent, allow background use; choose Unrestricted if available. Temporarily turn off Battery Saver while testing.
- Allow the Bluetooth, nearby-device, location, and notification permissions the app requests. Location requirements vary with Android version; older versions may tie Bluetooth scanning to location services, so location is not a universal requirement for every phone.
Google explains the effects of Android app restrictions in its background-sync guidance and location-services explanation.
On iPhone
- Check that Bluetooth is on under Settings → Bluetooth, and that the app has Bluetooth access under Settings → [Google Health/Fitbit].
- Make sure Background App Refresh is enabled for the app.
- Allow Cellular Data for the app if you need to sync away from Wi-Fi.
- If the issue is missing alerts rather than stale stats, check notification access too.
These are the main settings identified in Google’s iPhone troubleshooting guidance.

5. Update the phone, app, and Fitbit—and charge it
Install available updates for the phone’s operating system and the Fitbit/Google Health app, then check for Fitbit firmware updates. Connect the Fitbit to its charger before an update. Google recommends at least 50% battery, with 75% or higher recommended for firmware updates; model-specific instructions can differ. For example, the Charge 5 manual gives a different minimum for that model.
Keep the Fitbit near the phone and leave the app open or available in the background during a firmware update. Don’t interrupt it unless the official instructions say to. An update may take time, and a stale app or incomplete firmware can cause problems that a Bluetooth reset will not fix. Google’s update and connection guidance has the general steps.
6. Disconnect other phones and Bluetooth devices
Google says a Fitbit can sync with only one phone or tablet at a time. If you previously used it with another phone—or someone else’s device is nearby—try this:

- Temporarily turn Bluetooth off on other nearby phones and tablets that have used the Fitbit.
- If the Fitbit is paired there, remove or forget it from those devices.
- Check that the app is connecting to the correct Fitbit if you have more than one device in your account.
- Temporarily disconnect unnecessary Bluetooth accessories, then retry syncing with only your intended phone nearby.
If syncing resumes when Bluetooth is off on the other phone, that points to connection competition rather than proving the Fitbit is defective. See Google’s iPhone troubleshooting and general reconnection advice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Remove the stale pairing and set up the Fitbit again
Try this only after the less disruptive steps. A Fitbit can appear in the phone’s Bluetooth list while the app’s connection is stale; being remembered by the operating system is not the same as being correctly set up in the app.

- In the Fitbit/Google Health app, remove the Fitbit from the device or account connection.
- In the phone’s Bluetooth settings, choose Forget This Device on iPhone, or Unpair/Forget on Android.
- Force-close the app, then reopen it.
- Use the app’s setup flow to add the Fitbit again. Keep it close and charged while pairing.
Removing the old Bluetooth profile matters: leaving it in place can interfere with re-pairing. Follow Google’s re-pairing instructions.

If re-pairing still fails
On Android, try clearing the app cache if the option is available: Settings → Apps → Google Health/Fitbit → Storage & cache → Clear cache. On iPhone, there is generally no equivalent manual cache control, so uninstalling and reinstalling the app is the practical next step. Before uninstalling, check that your phone’s operating system is supported; older software may not be able to install the current app. Be ready to sign in again, and do not delete your account to fix a local Bluetooth problem. See Google’s app troubleshooting guidance.
What the symptoms may indicate
| What you notice | Where to look first |
|---|---|
| It syncs only while the app is open | Background battery or data restrictions |
| The Fitbit appears in Bluetooth settings but not in the app | A stale pairing or app/account connection |
| It works after another phone’s Bluetooth is turned off | A competing host device |
| The device time is wrong | It may not have synced recently |
| Stats sync but phone notifications do not arrive | Notification permissions or phone notification settings; see notification troubleshooting |
| The Fitbit will not charge or restart | Power, cable, or hardware rather than an ordinary sync setting |
| Several users report problems at the same time | A service-side issue is possible, but don’t assume an outage without checking reliable status information |
| Re-pairing fixes it only temporarily | A recurring stale profile, aggressive battery management, or unstable phone software may be involved |
These are diagnostic clues, not guaranteed diagnoses. Stats syncing and notifications share some connection infrastructure, but they have separate permissions; if stats arrive normally and only alerts fail, start with notification settings instead of repeating every sync step.
When to contact Google/Fitbit support
Stop cycling through phone settings and contact Google Health/Fitbit support if the Fitbit cannot restart, stays stuck on a logo, will not charge, is not detected by any compatible phone, or still cannot pair after you remove the old app connection and Bluetooth profile. Support is also appropriate for a recurring disconnect after a clean setup, an account or firmware error, or a problem that began with an update and persists through the official recovery steps.

If no compatible phone can detect it and it also will not charge or restart, hardware or power trouble becomes more plausible.
Keep a factory reset as a last resort
A factory reset is not the next routine fix for syncing. It can erase locally stored data that has not synced, along with alarms, goals, and notification settings. A reset may be considered for a serious device problem such as an unresponsive Fitbit, a boot loop, or a persistent update failure, following the official instructions for that exact model. A normal restart, Bluetooth reset, or removal of a Bluetooth pairing is different from erasing the device.
For source-backed steps, consult Google’s reconnection and reset guidance before taking any action that says erase or factory reset.
