If your Fitbit Sense or Sense 2 is stuck on the Fitbit logo, cycling through restarts, or showing a black screen, start with a one-hour charge from a wall outlet, then try the standard 10-second restart. These steps are non-destructive. The models differ at the last-resort stage: Google documents a factory-reset sequence for Sense 2 boot loops, but that sequence is not a general reset procedure for the original Sense.
Use the symptom guide below to choose the safest next step. A black screen does not, by itself, prove that the battery or display has failed.

First identify what the watch is doing
| Symptom | What to try first |
|---|---|
| The Fitbit logo stays on screen | Try the standard 10-second restart. If it returns to the same screen, charge for an hour and repeat the restart once. |
| The logo disappears and reappears repeatedly | Treat it as a boot loop. Confirm the watch has charge, try the standard restart, then follow the model-specific guidance below. |
| The screen is black and there is no vibration | Charge from a wall outlet for 60 minutes, check the charging connection, then restart while it is connected. |
| The screen is black, but the watch vibrates or responds | Charge and restart once. Continued vibration without a visible display warrants support; it does not prove which component has failed. |
| The logo appears only while the watch is on its charger | Check the charge level, cable alignment and contacts first. This can point to a power or charging problem, but the symptom alone is not a diagnosis. |
Google’s screen troubleshooting guidance covers blank, unresponsive, rebooting and flickering screens. None of these symptoms alone identifies the underlying fault.

1. Charge it correctly for an hour
A deeply discharged Sense can stay black for several minutes after charging begins. For a black screen, Google recommends connecting the watch to a wall outlet for 60 minutes, rather than using a computer’s USB port. Use the Sense-compatible charging cable and make sure it sits squarely against the back of the watch. See Google’s battery-charging troubleshooting steps.

- Plug the charger into a wall outlet and attach it squarely to the watch.
- Look for a battery indicator, the Fitbit logo or a vibration. Their absence does not establish whether power is reaching the watch.
- Inspect the gold charging contacts on the watch and the pins on the cable for visible dirt, residue or pins that appear stuck.
- If needed, carefully clean the contacts using Fitbit’s cleaning guidance. Do not scrape them with metal.
- Try another wall outlet or, if available, a known-good compatible cable. A faulty or poorly seated charger can resemble a watch failure.
Do not assume a black screen means the watch is charging. If the cable will not stay attached or its pins look damaged, stop relying on that cable and contact support or obtain a compatible replacement.
2. Restart a Fitbit Sense or Sense 2
The official restart is the same for both models:
- Leave the watch on its charger if its battery may be depleted.
- Press and hold the physical side button for 10 seconds.
- Release the button when the Fitbit logo appears, then wait for the clock or setup screen.
This is a restart, not a factory reset, and it does not erase stored fitness data. A vibration may occur during startup, and a watch recovering from a deep discharge may take longer than usual to reach its normal screen. Unsynced records are not guaranteed to be recoverable if the watch cannot boot. Follow Google’s restart instructions; the Sense manual also documents restarting the original model.
If the logo returns and stays put, or keeps cycling, charge for the full hour, check the contacts and cable, and perform one deliberate restart again. Repeatedly holding the button for arbitrary lengths of time is not a substitute for the documented procedure.

3. If it starts, sync before trying more
If the watch boots and the Fitbit app can see it, let it sync. Keep the phone near the watch, then check the app for a pending software update. Updates can take several minutes; the Sense manual recommends keeping the phone and watch close and charging the watch beforehand. Follow any charging instruction shown in the app or support guidance.
Do not remove the watch from your account or forget its Bluetooth connection just because the logo froze once. Re-pairing is more appropriate if the app reports a sync error or software issue, or if official support asks you to do it. Google documents remove-and-add steps for particular sync errors; they are not a universal black-screen fix.
4. Sense 2 only: factory reset for a critical boot loop
Warning: this is destructive. A factory reset erases the watch and returns it to setup. Try charging, checking the contacts, restarting, syncing or updating if possible, and contacting support before using it. Do not apply this sequence to the original Fitbit Sense: Google documents it for Sense 2 in its update-failure and boot-loop guidance.
- Connect the Sense 2 to its charger.
- Press and hold the side button for approximately 8 seconds, until the screen turns off.
- Release the button after the short vibration.
- Immediately press and hold the button again.
- Release when the blue logo appears and disappears.
- Immediately press and hold the button a final time until you feel a vibration. This triggers the factory reset.
The sequence depends on timing and on noticing the vibration and logo. If the watch does not behave as described, do not keep improvising button combinations; return to Google’s current instructions or contact support. The original Sense manual documents a restart, but does not provide this Sense 2 factory-reset sequence.

Contact Fitbit or Google support rather than continuing with DIY attempts if the watch remains black after an hour on a wall charger and a restart, repeatedly reboots at the logo, or vibrates and responds without showing an image. Also stop if the charging contacts or cable appear damaged, the watch became unresponsive after impact or water exposure, it overheats or appears swollen, or an update failure left it unable to boot. If the Fitbit app cannot detect it after charging and restarting, tell support that as well.
For a support request, gather the model (Sense or Sense 2), purchase date and retailer, what appears on screen, whether it vibrates, whether it charges or connects to the app, and whether the issue followed an update, drop or water exposure. Support can assess warranty eligibility and available options; a replacement is not guaranteed. The official charging, restart and update-failure guides direct unresolved cases toward support.
Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not insert a paper clip or other object into holes in the watch. The Sense manual identifies openings for components such as the altimeter, speaker and microphone and warns against inserting objects.
- Do not scrape the charging contacts with metal or repeatedly reset the watch when a bad cable or depleted battery may be the cause.
- Do not treat the device as waterproof. The Sense manual describes it as water resistant up to 50 metres; resistance can decrease with wear, damage, repair or disassembly.
- Do not assume a restart makes the latest unsynced data safe. Restarting does not erase stored data, but a watch that cannot boot may not be able to sync it.
Quick decision tree
- Black, no vibration: wall-charge 60 minutes, check the cable and contacts, then try the 10-second restart while charging. If still unresponsive, contact support.
- Logo frozen: perform the standard restart; if it remains frozen, charge for an hour and repeat once. Do not jump straight to a reset.
- Logo keeps cycling: treat it as a boot loop. Use the standard restart; only consider the documented destructive reset if yours is a Sense 2 and the problem is a critical boot loop.
- Black but vibrating: try charging and one restart. If it keeps responding without a visible screen, stop before a factory reset and contact support.
- Failure during an update: keep the phone close, do not repeatedly interrupt the process, and use Google’s update-failure instructions.
