Fitbit is not immediately abandoning its devices, but it is dismantling the social layer that made many of them worth wearing. As the Fitbit app transitions into Google Health, Groups and the Community Feed are being removed. Direct messages are also reported to be going, while the old Fitbit challenge ecosystem no longer has a documented one-for-one replacement.

Some leaderboard-style competition may remain in Google Health, but that is narrower than the former combination of groups, posts, messaging, badges and challenges. For users who relied on family step contests or friendly accountability, this is a meaningful loss—not simply a new app name.

What Fitbit users are losing

Google’s official transition guidance confirms that Groups and the Community Feed are removed as Fitbit becomes Google Health. Current coverage also reports the removal of direct messages.

Feature Status Who is affected
Groups Removed Users who organized or joined friend, family or community groups
Community Feed Removed Users who shared activity, encouragement and achievements
Direct messages Reported removed Users who communicated inside Fitbit
Old challenge ecosystem No documented like-for-like successor Users who depended on group competitions, challenge updates and shared motivation
Snore Detection Removed for Sense and Versa 3 Owners of those two older smartwatch models

The challenge change needs careful wording. It is not accurate to say that every form of competition has disappeared. Reporting indicates that Google Health includes or is introducing leaderboard-style head-to-head competition. However, that does not recreate Fitbit’s former integrated social system of groups, feeds, messages, challenges and community participation.

When did the change happen?

Google announced the Google Health app on May 7, 2026, saying that the Fitbit app would become Google Health. The transition began on May 19 and was expected to reach users between May 19 and May 26. Fitbit Premium was renamed Google Health Premium during the transition. Google separately said that Google Health Coach reached full rollout on May 26, when the Fitbit Air became available.

Rollout timing and feature availability can vary by account, country, operating system and app version. The official Google Health help page should take priority over older reports if the app changes again.

Is the Fitbit hardware still usable?

Yes—losing the social features does not mean that an existing Fitbit instantly stops working. Google says it will continue supporting existing devices with software releases, security updates, warranty fulfillment and customer service, subject to its device-support policies.

That support is not unlimited. Google’s Fitbit support policy and legacy-device guidance warn that older products may eventually lose software support or the ability to pair with the Fitbit app. A working device therefore remains a reasonable option for personal tracking, but buyers should not assume every older model will be supported indefinitely.

What remains in Google Health?

The redesigned app is focused more heavily on individual health data and coaching. Google says it can bring together information from Fitbit devices, Android Health Connect, Apple Health and selected connected services. Some integrations, including Strava and Withings, may need to be reconnected after the transition.

  • Personal activity, sleep, heart-rate and fitness tracking.
  • Device syncing and access to health metrics, subject to device and account compatibility.
  • Connections through Health Connect and Apple Health.
  • Personalized plans and adaptive coaching through Google Health Coach.
  • Optional paid insights and coaching through Google Health Premium.

A Google Account is required for Google Health. Existing Fitbit users generally receive the change through an app update rather than having to abandon their hardware and start from scratch. Google lists Android 11 or newer and iOS 16.4 or newer for the Google Health app, although availability can differ by market.

What happens to historical data, badges and old posts?

Do not assume that every part of the old social experience survives simply because personal health data continues to appear in the new app. The documented feature changes specifically remove Groups and the Community Feed, while current reporting describes the loss of direct messages and other community functions.

Google’s transition information does not justify a blanket promise that every old post, challenge record, badge, trophy or social interaction will be preserved in the same form. Before switching platforms, check what is visible in your account and export or record any information that matters to you. Personal tracking continuity and social-history continuity are separate questions.

Why this feels bigger than a redesigned menu

Fitbit’s social tools supplied motivation that raw statistics cannot. A family leaderboard created accountability, a feed supplied encouragement and a challenge gave people a reason to keep wearing a tracker after the novelty faded. That worked particularly well for casual walkers and non-athletes who did not need structured training plans.

The strategic direction now looks different. Google is emphasizing aggregated health data, personalized plans and AI coaching through Google Health and Health Coach. That may be useful for someone seeking individual guidance, but an AI coach is not a substitute for a friend sending encouragement or a household competing over steps. In practical terms, Fitbit is moving from fitness as a shared activity toward fitness as a personal dashboard and coaching product.

Does Google Health Premium replace Fitbit Premium?

Google Health Premium is primarily a coaching and insights subscription, not a replacement for the old community. Google lists personalized fitness, sleep and health coaching, and announces US pricing of $9.99 per month or $99 per year. New or returning Google Account users may also be offered a three-month trial after updating to Google Health.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Paying for Premium does not, based on the documented feature list, restore Fitbit Groups, the Community Feed or the former direct-message system. It may make sense for users who want guided plans and personalized analysis; it is a poor reason to subscribe if your main goal is family competition.

The most practical choices

Keep your Fitbit and add a separate social layer

This is the lowest-disruption option. Continue using Fitbit or Google Health for tracking, then run accountability through a messaging group, shared spreadsheet or independent fitness service. It preserves the battery life, comfort and familiar hardware many Fitbit owners prefer, but it is fragmented rather than seamless.

Use Garmin Connect

Garmin Connect is the strongest fit for users prepared to change hardware and wanting a broader fitness platform with badges, structured training and competition. Garmin says standard Connect features and data remain free. Garmin Connect+ adds personalized insights, expert training guidance, expanded LiveTrack and exclusive badge challenges for $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year in the US, with a 30-day trial.

The trade-off is complexity. Garmin is more training-oriented than Fitbit, and its full experience requires compatible Garmin hardware. It should not be treated as a guaranteed cross-brand restoration of Fitbit’s old community.

Use Strava

Strava works best for runners, cyclists, hikers and friend groups already recording workouts there. Its activity feed, clubs, segments and competition can provide a strong social layer, but it is not a direct substitute for casual, all-day family step contests.

  • Inspire 3 is the tracker that helps you find your energy, do what you love and feel your best – all you have to do is wear it;

  • Move more: Stay motivated with a Daily Readiness Score, Active Zone Minutes, all-day activity tracking and 24/7 heart rate, 40+ exercise modes, automatic exercise tracking, and reminders to move
  • Stress less: Keep an eye on your well-being with a daily Stress Management Score, mindfulness sessions, relax breathing sessions, irregular heart rhythm notifications, SpO2, menstrual health tracking, resting heart rate, and more[1,2]
  • Sleep better: Automatic sleep tracking, a daily detailed Sleep Score, smart wake vibrating alarm, and sleep mode help you improve your sleep quality[3]

Strava’s subscription pricing is country-specific. Check its current pricing page before subscribing, and verify exactly which Fitbit, Apple Health or Health Connect data will flow into the service. Its official Apple Health integration documentation is useful for iPhone users, but integrations do not automatically recreate Fitbit Groups.

Choose Apple Health and Apple Fitness+

This is most suitable for an iPhone household that already owns—or is willing to buy—an Apple Watch. Apple Health can act as a data hub and Fitness+ provides guided workouts. It is a poor fit for Android users and for anyone prioritizing a low-cost tracker with multi-day battery life.

Consider Samsung Health

Samsung Health is a logical ecosystem option for Android users invested in Samsung phones or Galaxy Watches. It may provide useful health tracking and device integration, but check the current state of group challenges, cross-brand compatibility and supported devices before buying specifically for social motivation.

Consider Oura or Whoop only for a different goal

Oura and Whoop are better suited to users prioritizing sleep, recovery, readiness and coaching. They are poor direct replacements for inexpensive, casual family step competitions, and their subscription-heavy models may cost more over time.

Which option fits your motivation?

Your priority Most sensible route Main compromise
Personal steps, sleep and heart-rate tracking Keep the current Fitbit The social layer is gone or reduced
Family-friendly step accountability Keep Fitbit hardware and add messaging or a separate challenge service Data and competition are split across apps
Running, cycling or hiking competition Strava, especially if friends already use it Less suited to casual all-day step contests
Badges and structured fitness challenges Garmin Connect Requires a Garmin ecosystem for the full experience
iPhone household and full smartwatch features Apple Watch, Apple Health and Fitness+ Higher hardware commitment and poor Android compatibility
Sleep and recovery coaching Oura or Whoop Subscription costs and little emphasis on step competition
Google’s new coaching direction Google Health, with Premium if its plans justify the cost Coaching is not community

Checklist before you switch

  1. Confirm your phone. Check Android or iOS requirements and whether the target service supports your exact phone and wearable.
  2. Check your friends’ platforms. A theoretically better challenge service is useless if nobody you want to compete with uses it.
  3. Verify data flows. Test whether steps, workouts, sleep and other metrics import in the direction you need.
  4. Review permissions. Health Connect and Apple Health connections may require explicit reauthorization after the transition.
  5. Check subscription costs. Compare monthly and annual plans, trials and which features remain free.
  6. Preserve important records. Export or document historical data, badges and challenge information you may want later.
  7. Do not replace working hardware automatically. If personal tracking is still reliable, the app redesign alone is not proof that you need a new watch or band.

The bottom line

Fitbit users are losing the old social and challenge infrastructure—most clearly Groups and the Community Feed, with direct messages and related community functions also reported to be disappearing. Google Health may retain narrower leaderboard competition, but there is no documented like-for-like replacement for the former Fitbit experience.

Your Fitbit can still be useful for personal tracking, and Google says existing devices continue to receive support within its device policies. The real decision is about motivation: stay with Fitbit if you mainly want simple health data, add an external social tool if you want to preserve competition, or move to Garmin, Strava or Apple’s ecosystem if your social fitness needs justify changing platforms.
