Fitbit Versa 2 owners have repeatedly reported sudden battery drain after an update, including drops from several days of use to less than a day. The reports are real, but the available evidence does not show that Fitbit confirmed a universal firmware defect. Version 35.72.1.23 appears in owner complaints; Fitbit’s release notes describe it only as a release with “bug fixes and improvements.” Start by checking settings, charging, and battery age before considering a reset or replacement. The evidence is stronger for Versa 2 than for the original Versa.
What owners are reporting
In Fitbit Community threads, some Versa 2 owners said battery life fell sharply after an update. Reports include watches that had lasted four or five days but then lasted roughly 10–12 hours, or less than 15 hours. A separate January 2026 report described daily charging after a recent update. These are individual accounts, not controlled tests, and they do not establish how common the problem is.
Complaints describe more than fast percentage loss: some users mention overnight drain, unusually quick charging, failure to reach 100%, reboots, warmth, or a battery indicator that changes abruptly. Those symptoms can point to different causes, so the timing of an update is useful evidence but not a diagnosis. See the February 2024 Versa 2 battery reports and the January 2026 discussion.

Which update is implicated—and has Fitbit confirmed a bug?
The version cited most specifically in Versa 2 complaints is 35.72.1.23, also identified as Fitbit OS 4.2.4. Fitbit’s published release notes list it as containing “bug fixes and improvements,” but do not identify a battery-drain issue or promise a fix. Owners may receive an update long after its original release, so “recent update” does not necessarily mean recently released firmware. A delayed or incomplete installation, a Fitbit app change, or a battery failing at the same time could also explain the timing.

Fitbit Community moderators have replied to individual complaints with troubleshooting suggestions, including checking power-hungry features and charging equipment. That is not the same as a formal company acknowledgment that an update caused the drain. The public material cited here does not confirm a universal defect or document an official firmware rollback.
How long should the battery last?
Google’s battery guidance estimates 4+ days for the original Versa and 6+ days for Versa 2 under stated conditions. Versa 2 may reach up to three days with always-on display enabled. These are “up to” estimates, not guarantees: display settings, notifications, exercise tracking, GPS, temperature, clock faces, and battery age all affect actual use. Google also notes that after several hundred charge cycles a device may need charging more often. A modest shortfall can be normal; a sudden fall from several days to a few hours is worth investigating.

- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
Consult Google’s battery-life guidance for conditions and feature-specific advice. Keep the models separate: the evidence tying sudden post-update complaints to a particular firmware is clearer for Versa 2 than for the original Versa. The original Versa is older, so ordinary battery aging is a particularly plausible alternative explanation.

Troubleshoot in order
- Record what is happening before changing settings. Note the exact watch model and firmware version, Fitbit app version, phone model and OS, battery percentage at bedtime and in the morning, charging behavior, and whether the watch gets warm. Record when the drain began and whether it followed a watch firmware update, a phone app update, or both. A repeatable observation is more useful to support than “the battery is bad.”
- Restart the watch. On Versa 2, press and hold the button for 10 seconds, until the Fitbit logo appears. The Versa 2 manual describes this restart; it does not erase watch data. Restarting is not the same as a factory reset.
- Run a simple settings test for one full charge cycle. Temporarily turn off always-on display, SpO2 tracking, unnecessary notifications, and GPS-enabled exercise tracking when you do not need them. Use a simple built-in clock face rather than an animated or complex third-party face, and disable nonessential alarms or reminders. Fitbit’s battery guidance identifies always-on display and GPS as battery-intensive; a Fitbit moderator has also called out SpO2 and excessive notifications.
- Check whether phone syncing or the app is involved. Sync the watch, then force-close the Fitbit app. You can temporarily switch off Bluetooth on the phone and observe whether the watch still drains rapidly. If it does, the phone connection is less likely to be the main cause, though this test alone cannot prove a hardware fault. Community troubleshooting has raised app changes as a possible factor; that is a lead to test, not an official diagnosis.
- Inspect charging. Use the correct charging cable, preferably the original if you have it. Ensure the contacts are clean and dry and the watch sits correctly on the charger. Try a computer USB port or a reliable, safety-certified wall adapter. Google says a full charge can take up to two hours and advises avoiding temperatures below 32°F (0°C) or above 113°F (45°C). A watch that charges only at a particular angle may have a cable, contact, or charging fault.
- Check firmware and update completion. Look in the watch’s Settings for its device or software information and record the displayed firmware version; Fitbit app labels and locations can vary by app version. If an update appears incomplete, keep the watch charged, near the phone, and syncing through the current app. Google recommends at least 50% charge (75% or more is recommended), a stable connection, and the latest app version before updating. Follow Google’s update troubleshooting guidance rather than attempting unofficial firmware files.
- Use a factory reset only as a last-resort diagnostic. Sync first, because a factory reset erases data and settings stored on the watch. Then set it up with minimal features enabled and test it before reinstalling third-party faces or turning on all notifications. A reset may help if configuration or software is corrupted; it cannot restore a worn battery.
Which cause is most likely?
| What you observe | What it may suggest |
|---|---|
| Drain began abruptly after an update, on a watch that had been holding charge normally | A software, app, or settings change is plausible, but a coincidental battery fault remains possible. |
| Battery improves when always-on display, notifications, or complex faces are disabled | Feature or settings load is likely contributing. |
| Drain continues with optional features off and the phone disconnected | Battery wear or a watch-side hardware problem becomes more plausible. |
| Battery had been declining for months, or the watch is several years old | Normal battery aging is a strong possibility. |
| Charge percentage jumps, collapses, or will not hold after a full charge | A battery or charging fault may be involved. |
| The watch becomes unusually hot, swells, smells unusual, or is physically damaged | Stop using and charging it; contact support. Do not open the watch. |
An update can coincide with, or expose, a weak battery if power use changes; that does not prove the update physically damaged the battery. Likewise, good performance with Bluetooth off does not by itself establish that the app was the cause.

Can you downgrade the firmware?
There is no supported Versa 2 firmware-downgrade procedure described in the Fitbit guidance cited here. A Fitbit Community discussion likewise points owners away from a supported rollback. Avoid unofficial firmware files, bootloader or recovery hacks, and opening the watch to force an older version; these can leave it unusable and are not a reliable fix.

Contact Fitbit support if the device may be under warranty, cannot charge, repeatedly reboots, remains dramatically short-lived after the controlled test, or shows heat or physical damage. Ask for a case number and provide the purchase date, model, firmware, phone and app versions, and your recorded battery results. Do not continue charging a watch that is swelling, unusually hot, or giving off an unusual odor.

Fitbit does not appear to offer a routine official battery-replacement service for these models, according to community support discussions. Third-party repair may be possible, but opening a sealed watch can compromise water resistance; parts and workmanship vary, and replacing the cell will not fix a software or charging fault. Get a quote before authorizing repair and compare it with the value of the watch. For an older device, replacement may be more practical, but compare features first: moving from Versa 2 to another model can mean losing functions you rely on. Published security-support dates are a separate consideration: Google lists at least December 2025 for Versa 2 and December 2021 for the original Versa. Those dates have passed, but they are not a promise that every feature or firmware update stopped on that date.

Versa 2: Multiple owners have reported severe battery changes after updates, with version 35.72.1.23 appearing in specific accounts. The association is worth checking, but it is not a confirmed universal firmware defect.
Original Versa: The evidence in the reports cited here is less specific. Its older age and published support history make battery wear, charging problems, or settings at least as important to investigate as an update. Google estimates 4+ days for the original Versa versus 6+ days for Versa 2, but real-world life depends on use and battery condition.
