Yes, some Versa 2 owners reported serious failures after firmware 35.72.1.23, but the best-documented incident dates to September–October 2022—not a confirmed 2026 mass-bricking event. Reports range from lost heart-rate and sleep tracking to Bluetooth failures, update loops and watches that became completely unresponsive. Current 2026 anecdotes do not prove that a new Versa 2 firmware update caused those failures.
What happened after firmware 35.72.1.23?
Fitbit Community posts from September and October 2022 associate Versa 2 problems with firmware 35.72.1.23. Owners described green optical-sensor LEDs no longer illuminating, missing heart-rate and sleep data, unstable Bluetooth connections, and update screens that repeatedly offered “Retry over Bluetooth” or “Retry over Wi-Fi.” Some called their watches bricked or unusable.
These are owner reports, not proof that every Versa 2 was affected or that Fitbit established a software-only cause. The incident is documented in community discussions about the pulse sensor, Bluetooth and a watch described as bricked: pulse-sensor reports, Bluetooth reports and the bricking discussion.
“Bricked” can mean three different failures
| State | Typical symptoms | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Soft failure | The watch turns on, but heart rate, sleep metrics, syncing, Bluetooth or apps fail. | Serious loss of function, but the device still runs. |
| Boot loop or update failure | Fitbit logo, endless progress screen, or repeated update retries. | Firmware transfer, corrupted software or hardware may be preventing normal startup. |
| Hard failure | No display, vibration, charging response, Bluetooth discovery or app connection. | Could be a dead battery, charging circuit, motherboard or deeper firmware failure. |
A failed heart-rate sensor alone is not a hard brick. Classifying the symptom correctly determines whether recovery steps are worthwhile.

Is a new 2026 update bricking Versa 2 watches?
There is no established 2026 Versa 2 mass-bricking event in the available evidence. A later community discussion still identifies 35.72.1.23 as the latest Versa 2 software: Fitbit Community firmware discussion. Fitbit’s official security-support table lists Versa 2 security updates through December 2025: Google’s support-period documentation.
Reports posted in 2026 mention older Fitbit devices dying after app or Google Health-related changes, but they mix models and circumstances. A three-to-six-year-old Versa 2 can also fail because of battery aging, damaged charging contacts, a faulty cable or coincidental hardware failure. An app update is not the same thing as device firmware.
Do not confuse this case with Fitbit’s separate battery-safety program for Sense and Versa 3. A UK government report says Fitbit issued a January 2025 firmware update for those models to reduce battery-overheating risk; it does not document a Versa 2 bricking incident: product-safety report.

- Track heart rate 24/ 7, steps, distance, calories burned, hourly activity, active minutes and floors climbed. Syncing range - up to 6.1 metres
Try these recovery steps in order
1. Confirm that the watch is receiving power
- Place the Versa 2 on its charger.
- Clean and dry the watch contacts and charger pins.
- Leave it charging for at least 30 minutes.
- Try a known-good power adapter or USB port.
Do not insert paper clips or other objects into the small openings on the watch; the Versa 2 manual identifies them as sensor openings that can be damaged: official manual.
2. Force a restart
Hold the Versa 2 button for 10 seconds and release it when the Fitbit logo appears. This restart should not erase data. If there is no logo, vibration, display or charging response, treat the problem as a likely hardware or deeper firmware failure.
3. Check app detection and syncing
- Open the Fitbit app and open its Devices section.
- Try a normal sync while keeping the phone and watch close together.
- Do not repeatedly start an update if the battery is low or the process fails at the same point.
Fitbit recommends charging before an update because updating can place extra demands on the battery: Versa 2 manual.

4. Isolate a heart-rate sensor problem
If the display and menus still work, open Settings and confirm heart-rate tracking is enabled. Turn it off, restart the watch, turn it back on and restart again. Check whether the green LEDs illuminate and whether the Today app shows a heart-rate reading. This sequence comes from community troubleshooting and is not a guaranteed repair: community guidance.

5. Change the clock face only when the watch is usable
A Fitbit product expert suggested switching to a Fitbit clock face because a third-party face can sometimes contribute to problems. This cannot help a watch with no response at all.
6. Factory-reset only as a last software step
Use Settings on the watch if it is responsive. A factory reset erases personal data, settings, apps and clock-face configuration, and may destroy unsynced data. If the watch cannot reach Settings, contact Fitbit rather than attempting unofficial button combinations, firmware flashing or downgrades. After a reset, avoid immediately reinstalling third-party faces and apps so you can test the base watch first: community reset advice.

When troubleshooting is unlikely to pay off
- No response after clean charging contacts, 30 minutes of charging and the 10-second restart.
- No app detection, Bluetooth discovery, vibration or charging indication.
- Repeated update failure at the same stage, especially after a factory reset.
- Rapid battery drain, swelling or unusual heat. Stop using a watch that becomes hot or appears damaged.
- A repair quote approaches the cost of a newer wearable.
These signs are at least as compatible with battery or hardware failure as with a software brick, particularly on a multi-year-old unit.
What to tell Fitbit support
Record the model, firmware version if visible, update date, country and proof of purchase. Describe separately whether the screen, vibration, charging, Bluetooth, app detection, syncing, heart-rate LEDs and sleep data work. No formal Versa 2 recall or published failure percentage was identified, and support outcomes are not guaranteed. One community post describes an individual out-of-warranty discount toward a new watch, not a universal replacement or refund policy: support outcome discussion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould you buy a used Versa 2 in 2026?
Usually not as a dependable long-term purchase. Its stated minimum security-support period ended in December 2025, batteries are now several years old, and future firmware support is uncertain. Consider a used unit only at a very low price, from a seller offering a meaningful return window. Test charging, screen, button, Bluetooth pairing, syncing, heart-rate LEDs and battery endurance before keeping it.
| Alternative | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fitbit Charge 6 | Fitbit users who can accept a tracker form factor. | Less smartwatch functionality and a smaller display. |
| Google Pixel Watch | Android users wanting a full smartwatch. | Typically shorter battery life and higher ownership cost. |
| Garmin watches | Fitness, GPS and long battery life. | Different health metrics and app ecosystem. |
| Apple Watch | iPhone owners wanting the broadest smartwatch ecosystem. | Not suitable for Android and generally shorter battery life. |
The Bottom Line
The Versa 2 failures linked to firmware 35.72.1.23 are a real 2022 owner-reported incident, but a confirmed 2026 Versa 2 bricking campaign has not been established. Separate sensor, update-loop and completely dead-watch symptoms carefully, try safe recovery steps once, and treat an unresponsive multi-year-old unit as a probable hardware or battery failure rather than assuming Google deliberately bricked it.
