For most new buyers, the Fitbit Versa 4 is the better choice—especially if you want Google Maps, Google Wallet, a physical side button, and the current Versa model. The Versa 3 remains worthwhile when it is substantially cheaper, in good condition, and you prefer its older Fitbit smartwatch features.
For existing Versa 3 owners, however, Versa 4 is not a major fitness-tracking upgrade. The decision is mainly about Google integration, controls, battery age, and software direction rather than a dramatic change in health sensors.

The biggest differences
Google Maps and Google Wallet
These are the clearest reasons to choose Versa 4. Google Maps can provide turn-by-turn directions on the watch, while Google Wallet replaces Fitbit Pay as the relevant payments platform for the newer model.

Neither feature makes Versa 4 independent of a phone or universally compatible. Maps generally depends on a nearby, connected phone and suitable account setup. Wallet availability depends on your country, bank, card and Google account. A supported U.S. card is not guaranteed simply because the watch supports Google Wallet.
Physical button and navigation
Versa 4 uses a physical side button. That is a practical improvement over Versa 3’s touch-sensitive side control, particularly when your hands are wet, you are exercising, or you are wearing gloves. The interface and quick-access controls were also refreshed, although Versa 4 remains a Fitbit fitness watch rather than a full Wear OS smartwatch.
Music, apps and assistants
Versa 3’s original information sheet lists Fitbit Pay, Google Assistant, Alexa, notifications, built-in GPS and music-related functionality. Versa 4 continues to support Alexa, but Google Assistant is not listed among its current advertised features. Its software direction is more restricted than the broader legacy Fitbit smartwatch experience associated with Versa 3.
This creates an unusual trade-off: Versa 4 is newer and better integrated with Google Maps and Google Wallet, but Versa 3 may be preferable to someone who values older app, assistant or music capabilities. Used Versa 3 buyers should verify that the specific feature still works with the current Fitbit/Google Health app, phone and account before buying.
Fitness and health tracking
Both watches cover the core Fitbit experience: 24/7 heart-rate tracking, resting heart rate, sleep duration and stages, Sleep Score, Active Zone Minutes, exercise tracking, automatic exercise recognition, built-in GPS, notifications and water resistance.
Versa 4’s specifications list a multi-path optical heart-rate sensor, red and infrared SpO2 sensors, accelerometer, altimeter, ambient-light sensor, NFC, microphone, speaker, skin-temperature sensor and GPS/GLONASS. Fitbit also advertises features such as Cardio Fitness Score, Daily Readiness Score, stress-management tools and menstrual-health tracking, with availability depending on region, account and software. The important conclusion is that Versa 4 is more of a feature-priorities upgrade than a sensor-generation upgrade. Do not buy it expecting a dramatic improvement in heart-rate, sleep or general wellness tracking. Neither watch is a medical diagnostic device. SpO2-related measurements, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, stress indicators, skin-temperature variation and readiness scores are wellness features, not substitutes for clinical testing.
GPS: built in, but not a navigation watch
Both Versa models have built-in GPS, so you can record an outdoor walk or run without carrying your phone. Versa 4’s specifications identify GPS plus GLONASS. Google’s technical specifications
GPS performance can still be affected by tall buildings, trees, weather, wrist position and the time needed to obtain a satellite lock. GPS use also reduces battery life. Your phone may provide a more reliable GPS track in some situations, and Versa 4’s Google Maps feature is a convenience layer—not equivalent to the full map, search and navigation experience on a phone.
Some reviews have reported GPS reliability concerns, but those observations are tied to particular firmware and testing conditions. There is not enough evidence here to claim that Versa 4 is universally more accurate than Versa 3.
Battery life and charging
Versa 4 is advertised to last six-plus days and to provide roughly a day’s charge after about 12 minutes of charging. Google’s technical specifications give an approximate two-hour full-charge time. Always-on display, GPS workouts, Bluetooth calls, frequent notifications and SpO2-related tracking can shorten runtime. Battery capacity also declines with age. This matters especially when comparing a new Versa 4 with a several-year-old Versa 3: their original battery claims may be similar, but a used Versa 3 may shut down during GPS exercise or no longer last through sleep tracking.
For a used Versa 3, ask how long it lasts with continuous heart-rate and sleep tracking, whether the original charger is included, whether it has a return window, and whether the seller discloses battery condition.
Smartwatch features and phone dependence
- Versa 4: Google Maps, Google Wallet, Alexa, notifications, Find My Phone, Bluetooth calls, always-on display and a physical button.
- Versa 3: original materials list Fitbit Pay, Google Assistant, Alexa, notifications, Bluetooth calls and built-in GPS, alongside broader legacy Fitbit smartwatch functionality.
Bluetooth calls on Versa 4 require the phone to be nearby; it is not a cellular watch. Notifications and calls likewise depend on the phone and Bluetooth connection. Google Wallet requires supported cards and setup. Maps may require the phone, Google Maps configuration and compatible account and region.
In other words, Versa 4 is a Fitbit-first smartwatch with selected Google services—not a full Google Pixel Watch replacement. If you want a large app ecosystem, cellular service or deep Google apps, look at Wear OS instead.

Compatibility, design and comfort
Google lists Versa 4 compatibility with iOS 16.4 or later and Android 11 or later, with Bluetooth Low Energy and an internet connection required for syncing. The stated syncing range is up to 30 feet. Compatibility specifications
“Works with iPhone and Android” does not mean identical functionality. Some notification and reply features can be Android-dependent, while Wallet, Alexa and Maps can vary by country, language, account and phone configuration. Check your phone’s operating-system version and Fitbit’s current compatibility guidance before purchase.
Versa 4 has an AMOLED display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, measures approximately 40.5 × 40.5 × 11.2 mm and weighs about 37.64 grams. It is water resistant to 50 meters—not waterproof—and includes small and large bands. The square screen is lightweight and well suited to sleep wearing, while always-on display mode will reduce battery life.
Do not assume Versa 3 bands fit Versa 4. Versa 3 documentation describes cross-compatible Sense and Versa 3 accessories, while Versa 4 uses a newer 24 mm attachment system. Check the attachment design before reusing old bands. Versa 3 information sheet

Fitbit Premium and Google Health Premium
Basic tracking remains useful without a paid subscription. Steps, heart rate, sleep, notifications and ordinary workout recording do not become worthless if you cancel Premium.
Some advanced insights, coaching, guided workouts and additional content require Premium. Google’s current Versa 4 product page advertises a limited three-month Google Health Premium offer, but trial length, branding, eligibility and renewal terms can vary by promotion and geography. Check whether the trial auto-renews, what price appears at checkout, which features remain after cancellation, and whether a previous Fitbit or Google trial makes you ineligible. Do not treat a trial as permanent access.
Which Fitbit should you buy?
Buy Versa 4 if:
- You want Google Wallet or Google Maps on your wrist.
- You are buying new and the price is close to the current official price.
- You prefer a physical button.
- Your existing Versa 3 has a degraded battery.
- You want the current Versa model and do not need a full Wear OS app ecosystem.
Buy Versa 3 if:
- It is substantially cheaper than Versa 4.
- You mainly need Fitbit’s core tracking, GPS and long battery life.
- You specifically prefer its legacy assistant, app or music functionality.
- You already own compatible accessories.
- The unit comes from a reputable seller with a meaningful warranty or return period.
“Substantially cheaper” should account for battery wear, uncertain remaining support and the cost of a replacement charger or bands. A small saving is usually not enough to justify an older used watch when Versa 4 is available at a reasonable price.
Choose neither if:
- You want cellular service without carrying a phone.
- You need ECG or more advanced health hardware.
- You want highly detailed sports analytics and dependable training GPS.
- You want a broad third-party app ecosystem.
- You strongly prefer Apple Watch, Garmin, Samsung or Wear OS features.
- You do not want any subscription-dependent insights or coaching.
Should Versa 3 owners upgrade?
- Check the battery. If Versa 3 still lasts comfortably through your normal day and sleep tracking, replacement is less urgent.
- Check your desired features. Google Wallet, Google Maps and the physical button are real reasons to move to Versa 4.
- Check what you might lose. If you depend on legacy apps, music functions or Google Assistant, confirm Versa 4 meets that need first.
- Check the price gap. If Versa 4 costs close to a replacement Versa 3, choose the newer model. If Versa 3 is deeply discounted and your needs are basic, it can still be sensible.
Keep Versa 3 if you are satisfied with its fitness tracking, battery and current software. Upgrade when Google services, a physical control, battery failure or a favorable price matters—not simply because Versa 4 has a newer number.
Alternatives worth considering
- Fitbit Sense 2: a more health-oriented Fitbit option with additional sensors and features.
- Fitbit Charge 6: a smaller fitness tracker for buyers who do not need a large square smartwatch display.
- Apple Watch: the stronger full smartwatch choice for iPhone users, but with shorter typical battery life.
- Google Pixel Watch: a more complete Wear OS experience and deeper Google services, generally with more frequent charging.
- Garmin: better suited to structured training, outdoor activities and sports metrics.
Final verdict
Buy Fitbit Versa 4 if it is near the current official price and you want Google Maps, Google Wallet, a physical button or the current Versa model. Buy Versa 3 only when it is considerably cheaper, has a healthy battery and its legacy features matter more than Google integration.
For most working Versa 3 owners, the best upgrade decision is to keep the watch until the battery deteriorates or a specific Versa 4 feature solves a real problem. The fitness experience overlaps too much for Versa 4 to be an automatic upgrade.
