Fitbit’s redesigned app is now transitioning into the Google Health app. The update brings a more visual Material 3 Expressive interface and a Gemini-powered health coach, but it also changes the product’s name, account requirements and Premium subscription branding. Existing Fitbit users can generally get the new experience through an app update; they do not need to buy a new tracker.
The design overhaul is real, but “fluid animations” should not be taken as a promise that every screen moves the same way on Android and iPhone. More importantly, the coach is a paid, eligibility-limited guidance feature—not a doctor or diagnostic service.
What changed in the Fitbit app?
This is more than a visual refresh. Google began transitioning Fitbit users to the Google Health app on May 19, 2026, with the rollout expected to reach users between May 19 and May 26. Fitbit Premium became Google Health Premium, and the app brings Fitbit and Pixel Watch information together with supported data from services such as Health Connect and Apple Health. Some users can also connect supported medical-record information. Google’s transition guidance explains the change.
- Visual redesign: Larger cards, updated icons and more prominent color and summaries make key information more visual.
- Reorganized sections: Health, fitness, sleep and coaching have refreshed layouts and navigation.
- New product direction: The app is becoming a broader health-data hub with Gemini-powered coaching, rather than only a companion for Fitbit devices.
Preview coverage described the redesigned experience as using Material 3 Expressive and highlighted changes to Today, Fitness and Sleep. Material 3 Expressive is a design direction, not a guarantee that every screen, animation or platform behaves identically. Google’s announcements focus on the interface and coaching, but do not specify a universal animation standard. So the redesign is confirmed; “fluid animations” is best treated as an impression of particular footage or devices, not a technical promise.

What the Google Health Coach can do
Google describes the coach as built with Gemini and designed to use available health and activity information to personalize guidance. What it can offer depends on your device, data, region and access tier. Announced functions include:
- Ask Coach: Ask conversational questions about fitness, sleep and health trends.
- Fitness planning: Get personalized weekly targets and workout plans, with step-by-step guidance for recommended workouts.
- Coach messages: Receive personalized updates at points such as the morning, after a workout or at the end of the week.
- Sleep insights: See a revised Sleep Score and summaries intended to connect sleep patterns with other available metrics.
- Proactive insights: Get guidance that may relate sleep, activity and other recorded health measures.
- Broader tracking: Log nutrition and water, cycle information, mood and mindfulness-related data; some features include stress or resilience insights.
- Medical-record summaries: In supported cases, review summaries or ask questions about connected medical-record information.
Google announced these functions in several stages, including fitness plans, coach messages and sleep changes and cycle, mental-wellbeing, nutrition and water features. The features are not necessarily available to every account or in every country, and recommendations depend on the information the app has. A wearable cannot capture every relevant health factor, so a personalized answer can still be incomplete or wrong.

What is free, and what requires Premium?
The base Google Health experience includes a range of tracking and logging when used with a compatible device and data source. Depending on what your tracker records and what is supported where you live, this can include activity, sleep, heart rate, HRV, blood oxygen, readiness or cardio-load information, weight, nutrition, water, moods, cycles and connected medical records.

Google says Premium coaching requires a Google Account, an internet connection, a compatible Fitbit or Pixel Watch, an eligible phone, age over 18 and a supported country. Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers may receive Google Health Premium at no extra cost in supported markets, but still need eligible hardware. Check the current eligibility and subscription terms before making a buying decision.
Who can use it?
Google lists Android 11 or later and iOS 16.4 or later as the phone requirements. Current Google Health features require app version 5.0 or newer, according to Google’s app-version guidance. The coach and Premium features have additional requirements, and country availability varies. A compatible device does not guarantee that every feature is available: operating system, region, account migration, age and subscription can all matter.

Existing Fitbit owners are the clearest audience: the new app is intended to carry forward their wearable experience while adding a broader dashboard and coaching. Pixel Watch owners may also bring their data into that view. You do not have to purchase Google Fitbit Air to use Google Health; Google says compatible existing Fitbit and Pixel Watch devices can qualify. A new tracker makes sense only if you want hardware as well as the app, and you have checked which metrics and coaching features it supports.

- Update the existing Fitbit app through Google Play or Apple’s App Store. The transition may arrive as an update rather than as a separate app installation.
- When prompted, sign in with or create a Google Account and complete the account move. Google Health requires a Google Account.
- Check that your Fitbit device or Pixel Watch is paired and syncing. For other data sources, review Health Connect or Apple Health permissions.
- Confirm the app is at version 5.0 or newer, then check whether Google Health Premium or a trial is offered to you.
- Review privacy, data-sharing and coach-personalization settings before connecting sensitive information.
If Google Health branding has not appeared, update manually and restart the phone; the rollout may still be staged. If the coach is missing, check your app version, country, age, subscription and paired-device eligibility. On iPhone, also verify iOS 16.4 or later and whether the specific feature supports iOS. If data is missing, check device sync and permissions before assuming it was lost.

Account migration is important for continued access. Google’s documentation states a July 15, 2026 data-deletion processing deadline for users who had not completed the required move. Because this is a consequential, date-specific policy, check the latest migration and data guidance directly if you have not moved your Fitbit account or need to preserve a copy of your data.
Limits, privacy and alternatives
The coach is not a medical professional, diagnostic tool or emergency service. Google says its tools are not intended for medical purposes and advises users to check generated responses for accuracy. Do not use an AI response to make urgent decisions or replace advice from a clinician. Connected medical-record features depend on supported providers and locations; summaries are not a substitute for the record itself or professional interpretation. See Google’s health-coaching terms and limitations.
Before connecting records or other sensitive information, consider which data sources you want to share and review the app’s privacy and personalization controls. More data can make recommendations more relevant, but it does not guarantee accuracy. Google may also change feature availability and the service over time.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhether this is the right health app depends on what you want from a watch or tracker:
- Google Health: A natural fit if you already use Fitbit or Pixel Watch and want tracking plus conversational coaching in one app.
- Apple Health: A system-level health-data hub for iPhone users who prioritize integration with Apple’s ecosystem.
- Samsung Health: A closer fit for people invested in Galaxy phones and watches.
- Garmin Connect: Worth considering if sports training and performance metrics are the priority.
- Oura: A sleep- and recovery-oriented option built around a ring.
- Strava: More focused on activity recording, routes and social exercise than all-purpose health coaching.
- MyFitnessPal and similar apps: More specialized choices for detailed food logging.
These are differences in focus, not evidence that one service is universally more accurate. For people who only want basic step and sleep tracking, the larger cards, coach prompts and recurring Premium cost may add little. For those who want explanations and plans tied to their wearable data, the new direction may be more useful than a dashboard alone.
