Fitbit’s Snore and Noise Detection was a real feature, but it is no longer available. Launched in September 2021 for the Fitbit Sense and Fitbit Versa 3, it used a watch’s microphone to estimate overnight sound levels and detect suspected snoring events. It required Fitbit Premium and was not a medical test. Google says the feature was removed during the transition to the Google Health app in 2026.

What Fitbit’s snoring feature actually did

Fitbit described the tool as Snore and Noise Detection. While the watch was worn during sleep, its microphone analyzed sounds in the surrounding environment. The feature reported overall sound intensity and periods it identified as possible snoring. Users could review a report in the Fitbit app after syncing in the morning.

That is more limited than the old headline’s suggestion that a watch could tell whether “you or your partner” was responsible. The feature analyzed sound near the wearer; the available descriptions do not establish that it could reliably identify who made a sound. A partner’s snoring, a pet, a fan, traffic, or other room noise could affect what the watch detected. Position, bedding and room acoustics could also affect whether a sound was picked up.

So a report could be a useful prompt to talk about a sleep concern, but it was not proof that a particular person snored. Nor does the documentation describe a full-night, playable audio recording being provided to users. It does confirm microphone use and sound analysis; it does not settle every question about raw audio processing or retention.

Which Fitbit watches supported it?

At launch, Snore and Noise Detection was available on the Fitbit Sense and Fitbit Versa 3, not all Fitbit watches. A Fitbit community moderator confirmed those two models as the supported devices after some owners of other watches saw the option appear.

The Fitbit Sense 2 did not inherit the feature. The similar name is not an indication of support; Fitbit community discussions distinguish Sense 2 from the original Sense. Google’s current documentation goes further: Snore Detection is no longer available for Sense and Versa 3 users either. Do not buy a current Fitbit expecting this discontinued tool to be included.

How people enabled it in the original Fitbit app

These are historical instructions for the 2021 Fitbit app, not steps for the current Google Health app:

  1. Open the Fitbit app and go to the Sleep section.
  2. Select “Check for snoring” and review the explanation and permission prompts.
  3. Enable Snore and Noise Detection, then wear the Sense or Versa 3 overnight.
  4. Sync the watch in the morning to view the report.

Contemporary rollout coverage reported that Fitbit recommended starting the night with at least 40% battery, since overnight microphone-based monitoring could use additional power. That was a recommendation for this feature at launch, not a current battery rule for Fitbit or Google Health devices.

Premium, privacy and battery considerations

The feature required a Fitbit Premium subscription at launch, according to the Fitbit Sense manual. Fitbit’s data documentation also listed snoring and sound events as optional Premium data. Fitbit Premium was renamed Google Health Premium in 2026, but the subscription change did not bring Snore Detection back.

Because the watch’s microphone was used during sleep, anyone considering the feature would reasonably want to know what sound data was processed and retained. The cited materials confirm microphone use and categorize snoring and sound events as optional data, but they do not establish that a complete audio file of the night was saved or answer every question about audio retention. Avoid assuming either that everything was recorded or that no audio was stored; consult the applicable Google documentation on Fitbit data and privacy controls for current information.

There were practical trade-offs too: users had to wear the watch overnight, keep it charged, and sync it to see the report. A sound-based estimate could miss snoring or flag other noises, and should not be treated as a clinical measurement.

It was not a sleep-apnea test

Fitbit presented the feature as sound analysis, not as a way to diagnose sleep apnea, measure airway obstruction or rule out a sleep disorder. A report showing no suspected snoring does not mean there is no sleep problem, and a detected event does not establish a diagnosis.

Persistent loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, observed pauses in breathing, or significant daytime sleepiness are reasons to discuss symptoms with a healthcare professional. A wearable report may help start that conversation, but treatment decisions should not be based on it alone. Snoring can also disrupt a bed partner’s sleep; discussing it without blame is more useful than treating a consumer-device report as proof of fault.

Current status: removed in the 2026 Google Health transition

Google’s current help documentation says that Snore Detection is no longer available for Fitbit Sense and Versa 3 users. Google’s transition to the Google Health app began on May 19, 2026. The feature’s 2021 launch is therefore historical news, not a current rollout—and paying for Google Health Premium should not be assumed to restore it.

Bottom line: Fitbit once offered microphone-based snoring estimates on the original Sense and Versa 3, with a Premium subscription. It could not reliably assign a sound to the wearer or a partner, and it was never a sleep-apnea diagnosis. Google says it has been discontinued, so it is not a reason to buy a current Fitbit.
