Galaxy Watch for Kids is not a new children’s watch. Announced by Samsung and Google on January 22, 2025, it is a supervised setup experience for the Galaxy Watch7 LTE, using Google Family Link to manage supported contacts, apps, location sharing and School Time. A child can use the watch without carrying a phone after setup, but a parent needs a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone to configure it, and standalone cellular use requires a supported LTE plan.
What Samsung and Google announced
The name describes a way to set up and manage a watch, not a kids-only hardware line. The launch device is the adult-sized Galaxy Watch7 LTE running Wear OS. Family Link connects the child’s supervised Google Account with parental controls for supported watch functions. Google’s announcement and Samsung’s announcement introduced the experience on January 22, 2025.
That distinction matters: “no phone needed” means the child does not have to carry a smartphone for normal use once the watch is configured and connected to cellular service. It does not mean the watch is phone-independent from the start.
What parents can manage

These are useful guardrails, not universal supervision of everything the watch can do. In particular, contact restrictions are tied to the supported phone and messaging apps, so check which apps are installed and what controls apply to each. Google’s launch explanation describes the controls, while its current setup guidance notes that app availability can depend on standalone capability and age settings.

Compatibility: what you need
- Galaxy Watch7 LTE. The Bluetooth/Wi-Fi-only model does not provide the same standalone cellular use. Google’s current support documentation identifies the Galaxy Watch7 as the supported Galaxy Watch for this experience; do not assume other Galaxy Watch models qualify.
- A compatible Samsung Galaxy phone. The launch requirements specify One UI 5.1 or later on the parent’s phone. A phone is needed to provision and manage the watch.
- A supervised child Google Account and a parent Google Account using Family Link.
- Current watch software and a compatible carrier plan, with eSIM activation completed.
- Carrier and regional availability. The initial U.S. rollout named AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Support can vary by location, plan and exact watch model.
If the “set up for a child” option is missing, first verify the exact watch model and LTE capability, update the phone and watch, and confirm regional and carrier support. Google’s support page is the better reference for current eligibility than launch-era screenshots.
How setup works
- Update the Galaxy Watch7 LTE to the latest available Wear OS software.
- Pair it with a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone.
- During setup, choose “set up for a child” if that option is offered.
- Sign in with, or create, the child’s supervised Google Account and complete the Family Link prompts.
- Activate the watch’s eSIM and cellular service through a supported carrier.
- Configure approved contacts, app approvals, location sharing, School Time and finding options.
- Before handing it over, test calls, messages, location updates and emergency contacts away from the parent’s phone.
Menu wording and sequence can change with software updates, so use Google’s current setup instructions if the prompts differ.

Location and emergency expectations
Family Link location is a convenience, not guaranteed real-time safety monitoring. The watch must be powered on and connected to the internet; airplane mode disables location sharing, and coverage, recent activity and other conditions can affect whether a location appears. Google says the feature may not be reliable in an emergency or available in every area. Do not treat it as a replacement for contacting emergency services or as a guaranteed live locator.

Google says emergency services and emergency contacts remain accessible despite ordinary contact restrictions. That is valuable, but parents should confirm how emergency calling works with their carrier and configuration rather than assuming every region or setup behaves identically.

School Time, apps and watch faces
School Time is intended to limit distractions during scheduled periods, not to turn the watch into a guaranteed silent brick. Build the schedule around the child’s actual day, including time zones, early dismissals, holidays, breaks and extracurricular activities, then test it. Add breaks where needed and check which functions remain available during the restricted period.
Samsung and Google also promoted more than 20 “Teacher Approved” apps and watch faces at launch, featuring brands including Barbie, Crayola, Marvel, MathTango, PBS KIDS, Rebel Girls, Rubik’s Cube, Tech Deck, Unicorn Academy and Wild Kratts. That launch label is not a promise that every item is available to every account, region or watch, nor that every app works without a phone connection. Google Play availability is subject to parental approval, age settings and standalone-watch support.

Price and the real cost
There is no separate kids-watch price because there is no dedicated kids hardware SKU. Samsung’s U.S. MSRP list for March 2026 showed $299.99 for the 40mm Galaxy Watch7 LTE and $329.99 for the 44mm LTE. Those are MSRP figures, not guaranteed sale prices, and exclude taxes, cellular service, activation or eSIM fees, and accessories. Budget for the watch plus a qualifying monthly LTE plan and any activation costs. A Bluetooth-only Watch7 may cost less, but it is not a like-for-like choice if the goal is for the child to make calls or connect away from a phone. No carrier plan price is stated here because it varies and a current plan amount is not established by the available sources.

Who it makes sense for—and who should look elsewhere
Galaxy Watch for Kids is most plausible for a family already using Samsung Galaxy phones that wants a supervised wearable between “no device” and a child’s first smartphone. It combines cellular calling, supported messaging and Wear OS apps with Family Link controls, provided the parent is comfortable with the setup, cost and app-specific limits.
Consider another route if the child needs dependable emergency tracking, the family uses an iPhone or non-Samsung Android phone, a monthly cellular commitment is undesirable, or a smaller, simpler, child-designed device is a priority. Fitbit Ace LTE is a separate child-focused option with its own ecosystem and requirements. Apple Watch For Your Kids is aimed at iPhone households. Dedicated kids’ LTE watches may simplify the experience but differ in apps, controls and service arrangements; a basic phone may be a better fit when reliable voice and text matter more than wrist convenience.
Before buying, consider the physical fit: the Watch7 is general-purpose adult hardware, not a purpose-built child-sized watch. Battery life will also vary with LTE use, calls, GPS, screen settings and app activity; no child-specific runtime is guaranteed. Test whether it lasts through the school day and establish a regular charging routine.
