For an iPhone, choose Apple Watch Ultra3; for an Android phone, choose Galaxy Watch Ultra2. The platform lock-in settles the decision for most buyers: Ultra3 requires an iPhone, while some of Ultra2’s most distinctive health and AI features require a Samsung Galaxy phone. Among compatible phones, Samsung leads on published battery and peak-brightness figures; Apple offers deeper iPhone integration, a broader set of health and emergency features, and satellite capabilities in supported regions.

This comparison covers the current models as of August 2026: Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Ultra2, announced in July 2026, and Apple Watch Ultra3. U.S. starting prices listed by the manufacturers are $699.99 and $799, respectively; promotions and trade-in offers can change what you pay. First, check your phone

Apple Watch Ultra3 requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later; it does not work with Android phones. Apple’s compatibility and feature details confirm the requirement. Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is the practical option for Android users, but compatibility does not guarantee every Samsung feature: ECG, blood-pressure monitoring, and Galaxy AI features may require a compatible Galaxy phone, Samsung Health or Samsung Health Monitor, a Samsung account, and regional availability. Check the specific feature and country before buying. Samsung’s feature comparison

So this is less a platform-neutral hardware shootout than Samsung’s rugged flagship for Android versus Apple’s rugged flagship for iPhone. If you already own one of those phones, compare the watch that supports it rather than treating the other as a realistic alternative.

Positioning Dual GPS, L1 and L5 Precision dual-frequency GPS
Phone requirement Android; some features require a compatible Galaxy phone iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later

These are manufacturer specifications, not results from a head-to-head test. In particular, battery figures use different stated conditions, and peak screen brightness does not establish which display is easier to read in every outdoor setting.

Design, comfort, and toughness

Both watches use titanium and are built around large cases, but their shapes differ. Samsung’s 47 mm model weighs 61.5 g and has a cushion-shaped case with three physical buttons, including a prominent Quick Button. Apple’s 49 mm design includes a customizable Action button. The larger cases make room for rugged-watch features, but also make both models substantial on the wrist. If you have a smaller wrist, consider thickness, how the band sits, and whether the watch will be comfortable overnight—not just the case diameter.

Titanium offers a useful weight-to-strength balance, not immunity from damage. Screens can scratch or crack; buttons, sensors, and seals can be affected by impact, chemicals, wear, and improper water use. Samsung lists IP69K, 10 ATM, MIL-STD-810H, and EN13319 qualifications for Ultra2; Apple lists IP6X dust resistance and 100-meter water resistance for Ultra3. Those ratings describe specific test standards and conditions. They do not mean either watch is indestructible.

Display: Samsung has the higher published peak

Samsung lists a 1.52-inch screen rated for up to 5,000 nits, compared with Apple’s always-on display rated for up to 3,000 nits. That gives Galaxy Watch Ultra2 the stronger headline brightness specification, which can matter in direct sun. It is not proof that it will always be more readable: glare, screen reflectivity, watch-face design, automatic brightness, polarized sunglasses, wrist angle, and power-saving settings all affect what you see. Peak brightness also should not be confused with sustained brightness throughout a workout.

Battery life and charging

Galaxy Watch Ultra2 has an 800 mAh battery, and Samsung claims up to 60 hours with always-on display enabled. Samsung also says a 30-minute fast charge reaches about 40%. Apple rates Ultra3 for up to 42 hours of normal use or up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode, and says it reaches 80% in about 45 minutes. Apple’s stated 42-hour test includes a defined mix of time checks, notifications, app use, a workout with Bluetooth music, sleep tracking, cellular connection, and time connected to an iPhone. Apple’s comparison page explains its test conditions.

Samsung has the stronger published endurance specification, but the figures are not directly comparable lab results. The amount of GPS tracking, LTE use, screen brightness, workouts, continuous health sensing, music playback, temperature, and dual-frequency positioning can change either watch’s runtime. A long hike with GPS or a trip relying on LTE will not necessarily match a marketing estimate. For weekend or multi-day trips, Galaxy looks more promising on paper; the actual margin under your workload cannot be established from these manufacturer figures alone. Apple’s Low Power Mode and quick top-up are useful, but do not erase the difference between the stated standard-use claims.

Outdoor navigation, diving, and water

Both watches advertise dual-frequency or dual-band GPS: Samsung specifies L1 and L5, while Apple calls Ultra3’s positioning precision dual-frequency GPS. The specifications alone do not establish which records a more accurate track. Performance depends on terrain, satellite visibility, watch software, mapping app, and power settings; dense buildings, forests, and canyons can challenge positioning. Apple supports offline maps with watchOS 26 when paired with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later, with availability varying by region. Apple lists the offline-map conditions. For either watch, check whether your preferred hiking, running, cycling, or diving app supports the routes and offline map data you need, and whether setup requires a phone or downloaded maps.

Samsung lists Ultra2 as 10 ATM and IP69K, with EN13319 diving-instrument certification and support for dives to about 40 meters (130 feet). Apple rates Ultra3 to 100 meters under ISO 22810:2010 and supports recreational scuba diving to 40 meters with a compatible third-party app; it also has depth and water-temperature sensors. Samsung’s certification is a notable specification for divers, while Apple offers its own built-in sensors and access to third-party dive apps. Neither should be treated as a substitute for professional or technical diving equipment. Recreational-diving support is not the same as a guarantee for every dive profile or use case.

Neither watch is waterproof. Water resistance can diminish over time, and impact damage or a compromised seal changes the practical risk. Ratings do not imply protection from every chemical, hot tub, steam exposure, or high-pressure water condition. Follow each manufacturer’s guidance for the activity and care after salt or pool water. Swimming, snorkeling, high-speed water sports, and scuba diving are different use cases; do not infer that a rating for one makes the watch appropriate for all of them.

Health features: compare availability and purpose, not just the checklist

Galaxy Watch Ultra2’s listed features include ECG, blood-pressure monitoring, body-composition measurement using bioelectrical impedance, sleep coaching and apnea detection, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, Energy Score, Vitals, personalized heart-rate zones, cycle tracking, and outdoor workouts such as Trail Run. Samsung says its blood-pressure feature requires calibration with a separately sold cuff. It is not a replacement for a dedicated blood-pressure monitor or medical care. Some Galaxy AI and health functions depend on a compatible Galaxy phone, Samsung apps and account, and local availability. Samsung describes feature requirements.

Apple Watch Ultra3 includes ECG, hypertension notifications, high- and low-heart-rate and irregular-rhythm notifications, low-cardio-fitness notifications, sleep tracking and sleep-apnea notifications, Vitals, wrist-temperature sensing, cycle tracking, Fall Detection, and Crash Detection. Apple lists Blood Oxygen availability subject to conditions and region. Its health features have eligibility and medical-use limits: for example, Blood Oxygen is for wellness rather than medical use, and an alert is not a diagnosis. Apple’s support page details availability and limitations.

There is no sound basis here to call one watch categorically more accurate. For a useful comparison, ask whether a feature works in your country and with your phone; whether it requires cuff calibration or another device; whether it produces a measurement, trend, or notification; and how you can access or share the data. Apple’s health platform is the more natural fit for iPhone users; Samsung offers distinctive measurements such as body composition and cuff-calibrated blood pressure to compatible users. Neither set of consumer features should be treated as a diagnosis or a reason to delay professional advice.

Emergency connectivity and cellular use

Apple Watch Ultra3’s standout off-grid feature is satellite support: Apple lists Emergency SOS via satellite and satellite-based Find My and Messages features. These capabilities are subject to location, sky and connection conditions, service terms, and other requirements. Apple says satellite Find My and Messages are included free for two years after Ultra3 activation, subject to conditions. Check Apple’s current terms and whether the feature is available where you plan to travel; satellite capability is not universal. Apple’s feature listing

Both watches offer cellular configurations, but using them away from a phone usually requires a compatible carrier, an eligible plan, coverage, and activation. Regional model support and carrier rules vary; Samsung explicitly notes regional and carrier dependencies for Ultra2. LTE can enable calls and other connected functions where service exists, but it is not satellite communication. GPS tracking without cellular coverage is also not the same as sending a message or calling for help.

Satellite features and watch-based emergency options supplement, rather than replace, a satellite messenger, personal locator beacon, dive equipment, or a wilderness emergency plan. For remote travel, verify the service area and carry equipment appropriate to the risk and route.

Cost and ownership details

At the listed U.S. starting prices, Ultra2 is $699.99 and Ultra3 is $799. These are manufacturer-listed starting prices, not guaranteed transaction prices. Samsung may advertise trade-in or credit promotions; confirm their terms and do not confuse a temporary offer with MSRP. Prices and promotions differ by country and can change. LTE service may add a recurring carrier charge, so check plan eligibility and costs before paying extra for cellular. Also factor in bands, protection, and replacement costs; do not assume that an old band or accessory fits a new model without checking its compatibility.

Both product lines offer activity-specific bands, but choose for fit and retention as well as appearance: a band suited to wet use may not be ideal for a long run, and a third-party band’s material and water suitability vary. For ongoing protection, review current plan terms directly with Apple or Samsung; coverage, exclusions, and price can change.

Which one should you buy?

  • Best for iPhone owners: Apple Watch Ultra3. It is the compatible option and integrates with Apple services and health features, with satellite capabilities in supported circumstances.
  • Best for Samsung Galaxy owners: Galaxy Watch Ultra2. It integrates with Samsung’s phone and health ecosystem and gives access to Galaxy-dependent features.
  • Best published battery and brightness specifications: Galaxy Watch Ultra2. Samsung claims up to 60 hours with AOD on and lists up to 5,000 nits, versus Apple’s 42-hour standard-use rating and 3,000-nit peak. These are not directly comparable real-world tests.
  • Best for satellite emergency features: Apple Watch Ultra3. Its listed satellite functions are an advantage where supported, not a replacement for dedicated emergency equipment.
  • For diving: choose by your phone, dive workflow, and equipment needs. Samsung lists EN13319 certification; Apple offers depth and water-temperature sensors and third-party app support. Both cite recreational use to 40 meters, not professional-diving credentials.
  • For a non-Samsung Android owner: Galaxy Watch Ultra2, with a feature check first. Confirm that the particular health and AI functions you want work on your phone and in your region.

If you mainly want notifications and step counting, or find 47–49 mm watches uncomfortable, consider a smaller model in your phone’s ecosystem instead. If your priority is multi-day or multi-week endurance, expedition navigation, or dedicated training tools, compare specialist outdoor watches from Garmin or COROS. These Ultra watches are capable smartwatches, not universal replacements for expedition gear.
