The Galaxy Watch7 and first-generation Galaxy Watch Ultra still support wireless charging—but not from the back of a Galaxy phone. Samsung’s Wireless PowerShare feature cannot charge either watch because a redesigned rear sensor arrangement increases the distance between the watch’s charging coil and the phone’s charging coil. The supported solution is the watch’s dedicated magnetic charging puck or a compatible Samsung Watch charger.
What changed with the Galaxy Watch7 and Watch Ultra?
Samsung has not removed wireless charging from these watches altogether. It has removed compatibility with one specific type of wireless charging: phone-to-watch reverse wireless charging through Samsung Wireless PowerShare.

Samsung’s U.S. support documentation explicitly lists the Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra as incompatible with Wireless PowerShare. The watches still use WPC-based wireless charging through their dedicated charging accessory.

Why doesn’t Wireless PowerShare work?
Samsung attributes the change to the redesigned rear sensor area. According to Samsung, the newer sensor arrangement increases the separation between the internal charging coil and the outside of the watch. That prevents the close coil-to-coil arrangement required for reliable charging from a phone.
This is a hardware-design limitation, not a hidden setting. Samsung’s public explanation does not provide an exact coil measurement, wattage threshold, or complete electrical diagram, so claims that the watch simply needs more power—or that it has completely abandoned Qi—go beyond what Samsung has confirmed.

What still works?
The supplied magnetic charger
The magnetic charging puck or cable supplied with the watch remains the normal charging method. Connect it to a suitable USB-C power source, such as a wall adapter, laptop, or power bank, and place the watch on the charging surface.
For travel, the simplest replacement for PowerShare is to carry that puck with a USB-C power bank. It is less convenient than placing the watch on the back of a phone, but it is the reliable supported setup.
Official Samsung Watch chargers
A spare official charger can be useful at work, in a travel bag, or in a second room. Samsung recommends using the charger designed for the relevant Galaxy Watch model. Its Galaxy Watch Fast Wireless Charger is one example, although availability, plugs, and model numbers vary by region.

Older chargers
Some older wireless charging accessories may work, but Samsung warns that older chargers can charge the Watch7 and Watch Ultra more slowly. “It charges” does not necessarily mean “it delivers the intended charging speed,” and compatibility can vary between pucks, docks, and third-party stands.
What does not work?
Wireless PowerShare from another Galaxy phone
Changing phones will not solve the problem. A Galaxy phone may support Wireless PowerShare and successfully charge other compatible devices, while still being unable to charge a Watch7 or Watch Ultra. The unsupported part is the watch’s receiving hardware.
Repositioning the watch repeatedly
Alignment matters with ordinary charging accessories, but it cannot overcome the Watch7 and Watch Ultra’s PowerShare incompatibility. If the watch shows no charging animation on the back of a phone, repeated repositioning is not a fix.

A software setting or update
There is no supported menu option that enables PowerShare reception on these watches. Because Samsung documents the limitation as a consequence of the physical rear design, resetting the watch, pairing it with a different phone, or changing One UI settings is unlikely to help. No verified software update has restored the feature.
A generic Qi phone pad
The watches use WPC-based wireless charging, but smartwatch coils and alignment requirements differ from those of phones. A flat phone charging pad may fail to charge the watch, charge slowly, or align poorly. Treat a dedicated Samsung Watch charger—not an arbitrary Qi pad—as the dependable choice.

Which Galaxy Watches still support phone charging?
This is not a change affecting every Galaxy Watch. Samsung’s documentation lists older families including the Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, and Watch6 as compatible examples for Wireless PowerShare, while excluding the Watch7, first-generation Watch Ultra, and the later Watch8 series.

That makes the Watch7 and Watch Ultra a potential feature regression for anyone upgrading from an older model and relying on a phone as an emergency charging surface. It does not mean those watches have lost their normal wireless charging system.
Be careful with model names: Samsung introduced the original Galaxy Watch Ultra alongside the Galaxy Watch7 in 2024. Later Ultra products should be identified by their specific generation when comparing compatibility.
Is this a serious disadvantage?
It depends on how you charge.
- It matters more if you travel with only a phone and watch, hike or camp, commute for long hours, or regularly used PowerShare on a Watch4, Watch5, or Watch6.
- It matters less if you charge overnight at home, already carry a USB-C power bank, or are primarily buying the Watch7 or Ultra for its newer sensors, performance, GPS, or other hardware.
The practical impact is best described as a travel and emergency-charging regression, not a failure of the watch’s charging system. Most owners will charge normally with the supplied puck; they simply lose the convenience of using a phone as a backup charger.
Best alternatives for owners
- Keep the supplied puck in your travel kit. It is the safest and most predictable option.
- Pair it with a USB-C power bank. This recreates portable charging without relying on unsupported phone-to-watch PowerShare.
- Buy a spare official Watch charger. Keep one at home and one in a bag or office.
- Check multi-device pads carefully. A product such as Samsung’s Wireless Charger Trio is only suitable if the exact revision includes a compatible Galaxy Watch charging area. A phone-only pad is not a substitute.
- Choose an older Galaxy Watch only if PowerShare is essential. Watch4, Watch5, and Watch6 families are the relevant older alternatives listed by Samsung, but availability and software support vary by region, and older models may give up newer hardware features.
Need a travel solution? Carry the Watch7 or Ultra’s magnetic charger with a USB-C power bank, or keep a spare official Samsung Watch charger in your bag. A Galaxy phone with Wireless PowerShare cannot replace the watch charger for these models.
The bottom line
The Galaxy Watch7 and first-generation Galaxy Watch Ultra did not abandon wireless charging. They abandoned compatibility with wireless charging from the back of a phone. Samsung says the redesigned rear sensors place the charging coil too far from a phone’s reverse-charging coil for Wireless PowerShare to work. Use the supplied magnetic puck or a compatible Samsung Watch charger instead, and factor the lost emergency-charging option into your buying decision if you travel light.
