Samsung announced the Galaxy Watch8 and Galaxy Watch8 Classic on July 9, 2025, giving both models Wear OS 6, One UI 8 Watch and Google Gemini built in. U.S. availability began July 25, 2025, with other markets following their own schedules. The standard Watch8 is the lighter, less expensive choice; the Watch8 Classic adds a rotating bezel, traditional styling and considerably more weight.
They were not new August 2026 announcements. This is the current buying context for Samsung’s 2025 smartwatch lineup.
U.S. prices and configurations
The following are U.S. MSRPs listed in Samsung’s price document effective June 2026, not guaranteed live sale prices. Promotions, trade-in credits and carrier offers can change the amount you actually pay.

Bluetooth/Wi-Fi models make the most sense when the watch will normally be near a phone and you want to avoid a monthly cellular charge. LTE models can support calls, messages and data when you leave the phone behind, but require a compatible carrier plan. Carrier support, activation terms and recurring prices vary by market.

What Gemini can do on Galaxy Watch8
Gemini is the headline software change. Google says users can launch it by saying “Hey Google”, pressing and holding the side button, or opening the Gemini app on the watch. It can answer questions, help with tasks and interact with information across supported apps and services.
Samsung’s examples include asking Gemini to start a 300-calorie circuit-training workout, which can hand the request to Samsung Health and begin exercise tracking. Gemini can also provide information during exercise, answer everyday questions and access or control functions in compatible apps.
However, “built in” does not mean the watch contains a fully independent, unrestricted local AI system. Many requests depend on an internet connection, a paired compatible Android phone, Google and Samsung account setup, supported apps, software versions, language and regional availability. Watch-based Gemini also does not automatically provide every feature available in the phone app. AI responses can be wrong, so Gemini should not be treated as medical, financial or emergency advice.

The Watch8 is Samsung’s thinnest smartwatch, according to Samsung, and uses a redesigned lug system with a cushion-shaped case intended to improve fit. The 40mm model is the best option for smaller wrists and the lowest entry price. The 44mm version provides a larger screen and battery without moving to Classic pricing.
The Classic is not merely a cosmetic variant. Its rotating bezel offers a tactile way to navigate menus, but its 46mm case and 63.5g listed watch-head weight make it substantially heavier. That matters for running, sleep tracking, small wrists and anyone who dislikes wearing a large watch overnight.

Health and fitness features
Both watches focus heavily on sleep, exercise and health insights through Samsung Health. Features include:

- Bedtime Guidance: analyzes sleep patterns and recommends an optimal bedtime.
- Running Coach: assesses running level, creates a personalized plan and provides real-time coaching.
- Vascular stress: provides sleep-related measurements intended to offer broader health insight.
- Antioxidant Index: Samsung’s smartwatch-first feature, based on measurements related to carotenoid levels.
- Exercise and energy insights: tracks workouts and combines activity and sleep information into guidance.
Availability of individual health tools can vary by country, regulatory approval, phone model, Samsung Health version, account and supporting services. Samsung says information from the watch, Samsung Health and related software is not intended to diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat or prevent disease. Treat these features as wellness information, not clinical diagnoses, and consult a medical professional about health concerns.
Samsung also lists display brightness of up to 3,000 nits. That is a manufacturer-listed peak figure, not a promise that the display remains at that brightness in every condition.

Battery capacity is not the same as guaranteed runtime. Actual endurance depends on display settings, GPS, LTE, workouts, notifications and Gemini use; Samsung’s published capacities alone do not establish one real-world battery figure for every user.

Samsung lists an Android phone running Android 12 or later with more than 1.5GB of RAM as the compatibility baseline. Some functions require a compatible Galaxy smartphone. The watches are therefore not an Apple Watch alternative for iPhone owners: iPhone users should rule them out unless they are prepared to move to Android.

Which model should you buy?
- Choose Watch8 40mm for the smallest case, lowest entry price and lightest design.
- Choose Watch8 44mm for a larger display and battery while keeping the thinner, sportier design.
- Choose Watch8 Classic if the rotating bezel and conventional watch appearance are essential and you accept the higher price and 63.5g watch-head weight.
- Choose Bluetooth/Wi-Fi if your phone is usually nearby and you do not want a cellular subscription.
- Choose LTE if leaving the phone behind is worth the higher upfront and recurring cost, and your carrier supports the exact model.
The separate Galaxy Watch Ultra sits above these models as Samsung’s more rugged, outdoor-oriented option. It is not the obvious choice if your priorities are everyday comfort, sleep tracking and Gemini.
When an older Galaxy Watch makes more sense
A discounted Galaxy Watch7 can be the better value if Gemini is not the deciding feature and you do not need Watch8’s newest design or health tools. Compare the total price rather than assuming the newer model is automatically the better deal. A substantial discount can outweigh incremental software and hardware improvements for buyers who mainly want notifications, workouts, sleep tracking and Samsung Health.
If Gemini does not respond
Try this practical sequence:
- Confirm that the watch is paired with a compatible Android phone.
- Check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or LTE connectivity.
- Update the watch, Galaxy Wearable app and relevant Google apps.
- Verify Google and Samsung account sign-in and permissions.
- Open Gemini from its app icon instead of using voice activation.
- Restart both the watch and phone.
- Check whether the request requires an app or service unavailable on the watch.
Voice activation can also be less reliable in noisy places. Button or on-screen activation is a useful alternative. Unsupported languages, regions, incomplete setup and requests outside the watch’s supported services can all produce different behavior from phone-based Gemini.

Galaxy Watch8 and Watch8 Classic made Gemini a headline feature of Samsung’s 2025 smartwatch lineup, but the buying decision is not only about AI. The standard Watch8 is the practical choice for most Android users because it is thinner, lighter and less expensive. The 44mm model is the balanced option for buyers who want more screen and battery. The Classic earns its premium mainly through the rotating bezel and traditional design—not because Gemini works fundamentally differently on it.
For iPhone owners, neither model is suitable. For existing Galaxy Watch owners, upgrading makes the most sense when Gemini, the new sleep and running tools, or the lighter Watch8 design solves a specific need. Independent battery, GPS, AI-latency and sensor-reliability claims should not be inferred from Samsung’s launch specifications alone.
