The “another awesome health feature” is Samsung’s Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN), announced in 2023. It checks a compatible Galaxy Watch’s pulse periodically while you’re still and can flag a pattern suggestive of atrial fibrillation (AFib), then prompt you to record an ECG. It is not a continuous AFib monitor, and it cannot diagnose a heart condition.

What the feature does—and what it doesn’t

IHRN is the passive screening part of Samsung Health Monitor. It analyzes pulse-rate data from a compatible watch, checking a few times a day while you are still. If it detects an irregular pattern suggestive of AFib for about an hour, it can send a notification recommending an ECG recording.

The follow-up ECG is a separate, user-started measurement that records the heart’s electrical activity more directly than the watch’s passive pulse screening. A notification is a reason to take that recording and discuss the result with a healthcare professional—not a diagnosis. AFib is associated with significant health risks, but only a qualified clinician can determine what a watch alert means and whether testing or treatment is needed.

Because checks are periodic rather than continuous, IHRN may miss episodes, especially those lasting less than an hour. No notification does not establish that your rhythm is normal or that AFib is absent. The US FDA-cleared indication is for informational use in adults 22 and older and is not intended to alert users to every possible AFib episode. FDA clearance documentation

Do your watch, phone and region qualify?

Owning a Galaxy Watch is not enough by itself. Watch model, software, phone, Samsung Health Monitor support and country authorization are separate requirements. Samsung’s compatibility information varies by Health Monitor function, so do not assume a model qualifies just because it has heart-rate tracking or an ECG feature.

  • Watch: Check the specific model and its current software support for Samsung Health Monitor and IHRN. The feature first rolled out in 2023 to new watches and then to supported older models; that historical rollout is not a universal compatibility guarantee.
  • Phone: Samsung’s US support page says Wear OS Galaxy Watches require pairing with a Galaxy phone running Android 12.0 or later. Older Galaxy Watch Active2 and Watch3 models have separate requirements. A non-Samsung Android phone should not be assumed to support every Health Monitor feature.
  • App and software: You need Samsung Health Monitor, a paired watch and phone, and up-to-date software. The app’s availability and supported functions can depend on the device combination.
  • Country: IHRN is available only where supported. Samsung’s 2023 announcement named 13 initial markets, but that list is historical, not a complete current list. Check Samsung Health Monitor in your country rather than relying on an old rollout list.

For US requirements and troubleshooting, consult Samsung’s Health Monitor compatibility and ECG support page and its app availability troubleshooting guide. Samsung’s Health Monitor page describes current US feature behavior and limitations.

How to turn on Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification

  1. Pair the watch with a compatible Galaxy phone over Bluetooth and connect it through the Galaxy Wearable app.
  2. Install available watch software updates.
  3. Install or update Samsung Health Monitor from the Galaxy Store.
  4. Open Samsung Health Monitor on the phone and complete its setup.
  5. Record an ECG that is not classified as a poor recording.
  6. In the ECG area, tap Get started and follow the prompts. Enable Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification if the option is offered for your device and region.

Menu labels can vary by app version and device. If the option is missing, check the model, phone and Android version, software updates, app availability and country support; updating the watch alone may not resolve a compatibility or regional limitation.

If you receive an alert

Follow the app’s prompt and record an ECG as soon as practical. Samsung says a completed result can sync to the paired phone, where you can create and share a PDF report with a healthcare professional. The alert or ECG classification is not a diagnosis; ask a clinician what it means for you.

Do not wait for a watch alert or ECG if you may be having an emergency. Seek urgent medical care for chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting or other potentially life-threatening symptoms, regardless of what the watch reports.

Getting a usable ECG recording

For better contact and fewer poor recordings, Samsung recommends sitting quietly for about 5–10 minutes first. Make sure the sensor is clean and dry, and wear the watch snugly, away from the wrist bone, so it lies flat. Rest your arm on a flat surface, place a fingertip on the top button without pressing it, and avoid talking or moving during the roughly 30-second recording.

If the app reports Poor recording, try again and follow its troubleshooting guidance if the problem continues. Movement, talking, a loose fit, poor skin contact, a dirty sensor, dry skin or incorrect finger placement can interfere with the recording. An Inconclusive result is also possible; Samsung says this can happen when the heart rate is below 50 bpm or above 150 bpm, or when the rhythm cannot be classified. Neither outcome is a diagnosis.

Important limits before relying on it

  • IHRN does not continuously scan for AFib, detect every episode or rule out AFib when no alert appears.
  • The feature is intended to flag patterns suggestive of AFib, not all irregular rhythms or other heart conditions.
  • Samsung’s ECG app is not intended to diagnose cardiac conditions or a heart attack, replace conventional diagnosis or treatment, or guide medication changes or dosage.
  • Samsung’s ECG warnings say not to use the app with an implanted pacemaker, implanted cardiac defibrillator or other implanted electronic device, or if you have a known arrhythmia other than AFib. Consult Samsung’s current instructions and a clinician about your circumstances.

The ECG result is handled through Samsung Health Monitor on the paired phone. Before enabling health features, review Samsung’s current account, synchronization and privacy settings; storage and retention details can depend on current settings and policies.

Why some owners heard about it as “new”

Samsung announced FDA clearance for IHRN on May 8, 2023, and announced a broader rollout on June 14, 2023. The initial rollout covered 13 markets, including the United States, and was described as beginning with new Galaxy Watch devices before extending to supported older models. This is established functionality where supported, not a feature newly announced in 2026. Samsung’s clearance announcement · Samsung’s rollout announcement
