Google’s April 7, 2026 Android XR update makes Samsung’s Galaxy XR easier to arrange, resume, and use with existing content. The most ambitious addition—giving 2D apps and media a spatialized, 3D-like effect—is also experimental. The update began rolling out that day, but a rollout announcement does not mean every headset received it immediately.
This is a software update to Android XR, the platform behind Galaxy XR—not a new headset. Samsung introduced Galaxy XR in October 2025 as the first device built on Android XR. Google’s update adds five headline improvements, although their everyday value varies: session restoration and surface pinning address routine friction, while auto-spatialization is a Labs experiment. Google’s announcement is the source for the features and the app-count figure below.

1. Auto-spatialization gives 2D content simulated depth
Google says auto-spatialization can add a depth effect to many apps, games, websites, images, and videos. Its examples include YouTube videos, Chrome websites, 2D games, and ordinary images or video. To try it, open Settings → Advanced features → Labs. The option may not appear until the relevant update has reached your headset; menu wording can also depend on software version.

A flat video does not acquire the depth information of native immersive media just because the headset processes it. Results may be more appealing for some imagery than for small text, busy interfaces, rapid movement, stylized graphics, or footage with confusing depth cues. If the effect looks distracting or produces artifacts, turn it off for that content. Its promise is making some existing material feel less flat—not making every app look better.

2. The XR-specific app catalog is growing
Google said that, as of its April 7 announcement, Android XR had more than 100 apps made specifically for XR—more than twice the number available when Galaxy XR launched. That is a dated announcement figure, not a verified count for today. Google named Real VR Fishing, upcoming Trombone Champ: Unflattened!, and PSG Immersion, a sports experience intended to put viewers in the atmosphere of Paris Saint-Germain’s Parc des Princes stadium.
It helps to distinguish three things: an ordinary Android app that runs in the headset, an app adapted with XR-specific interface or spatial features, and a fully immersive experience designed around the headset. They are not interchangeable. A growing catalog is evidence of ecosystem progress, but it does not mean every popular phone app has a polished spatial version. Check app availability, regional access, and any subscription requirements for the specific experience you want.
3. Pin apps to surfaces in your room
Users can pin apps to physical surfaces, letting them place windows in a preferred location—for example, a browser on a wall or a media window where it is comfortable to watch. That makes the headset’s spatial layout more useful as a workspace or repeatable entertainment setup.
Pinning and session restoration solve different problems. Pinning anchors an app to a physical surface; restoration reopens apps in their earlier arrangement when you return. Google’s announcement does not specify every supported surface or guarantee how anchors behave after a room change, tracking loss, reboot, or move between Home Space and an immersive environment. Treat those details as something to check on your device rather than assuming an app will stay fixed everywhere.
4. Real hands are visible in Home Space
Instead of seeing only white hand outlines, users can see their physical hands interacting with virtual content in Home Space. Google lists this under Settings → Advanced features → Labs. Seeing your hands can make reaching, pinching, or swiping feel more direct and help you stay visually connected to your surroundings during ordinary tasks.
This is not a promise of perfect visibility or tracking in every situation, nor does the announcement say it applies in every immersive app. Dim or uneven lighting, hands hidden behind objects, fast movement, or hands outside the headset cameras’ view can interfere. Visibility and tracking accuracy are related but distinct: a rendered view of your hands does not guarantee every gesture will register reliably.
5. Session restoration reduces setup friction
When you resume a session, the headset can reopen apps in their previous arrangement. This is the least showy change and may be the one frequent users appreciate most: a multi-window setup is less tedious to rebuild after a break, interruption, or step away from the headset.

Google describes restoration of apps and their arrangement; it does not promise that every app will preserve its exact internal state. Whether a document, sign-in, or media position is retained can depend on the app. A crash, forced restart, software update, or changed room conditions may also affect what comes back. In short, expect help getting your workspace back—not a guarantee that every app continues exactly where it stopped.
Other changes, including business support
Google also lists improvements to hand tracking, eye tracking, and accessibility. Android Enterprise support is another addition, aimed at organizations managing XR devices rather than typical home users. Google names ArborXR, ManageXR, Microsoft Intune, Omnissa Workspace ONE, Samsung Knox Manage, and SOTI among management partners. A company considering deployment should confirm its chosen management platform’s compatibility and requirements; most consumers do not need one.

Does the update change whether Galaxy XR is worth considering?
For current owners, the strongest practical reasons to try the update are session restoration and surface pinning. Both target repeated setup and spatial organization. Auto-spatialization is the more novel feature, but it is explicitly experimental, so treat it as something to test rather than a reason to expect cinema-quality 3D from flat media. The Labs menu is also where Google says to enable visible hands in Home Space.
For prospective buyers, the update is a usability improvement, not proof that Android XR now has a mature native-XR catalog. Google’s 100-plus figure is encouraging but dated to April, and app quality, regional access, and developer support still matter. If the update has not appeared, check the headset’s software-update screen and allow for a staged or region-dependent rollout; Google said it began rolling out on April 7, 2026, not that all headsets received it at once. A feature may also require Labs or a compatible app. The broader significance is that Android XR is adding everyday usability, immersive software, and enterprise management—but its long-term value still depends on reliable features and a steadily supported app ecosystem.
