Garmin announced its rugged Instinct 3 watches on January 6, 2025, ahead of CES, where the company said they would be shown at booth #3540 in the LVCC West Hall. The lineup pairs Instinct 3 AMOLED and Solar models with the lower-cost, essentials-focused Instinct E. The key choice is whether you want the Instinct 3’s display, solar, flashlight and other premium features—or a simpler rugged GPS watch in a smaller size.
What Garmin announced
The January 6 announcement covered two Instinct 3 display families—AMOLED and Solar—in 45 mm and 50 mm cases, plus Instinct E in 40 mm and 45 mm sizes. Garmin said the products would be on display at CES 2025; “announced ahead of CES and shown at CES” is more precise than suggesting the announcement itself took place at the show. Garmin’s announcement set U.S. launch MSRPs at $449.99 and up for Instinct 3 AMOLED and $399.99 and up for Instinct 3 Solar, with orders scheduled to begin January 10, 2025. Those are launch prices, not verified current prices.
Garmin positioned Instinct E as the more affordable option for buyers who want a rugged GPS smartwatch focused on essential features. It is not simply a smaller Instinct 3: the two ranges differ in premium features, and the E’s smaller 40 mm option is a meaningful fit choice.
What is new in Instinct 3
A choice of AMOLED or Solar
AMOLED brings a bright, colorful presentation closer to that of a conventional modern smartwatch. Solar keeps the series’ sunlight-oriented display and battery focus. Neither is universally better: the practical trade-off is screen preference versus how often you are willing to charge.

More hardware and outdoor features
Garmin highlights a metal-reinforced bezel, fiber-reinforced polymer case and scratch-resistant display. It says the watches are built to MIL-STD 810 for thermal and shock resistance and are water-rated to 100 meters. That is Garmin’s stated construction and rating, not a claim that the watches are indestructible or universally approved for military use.
All Instinct 3 models have a built-in LED flashlight with variable intensities, red light and strobe mode. Garmin also lists multi-band GPS with SatIQ, Garmin Pay, Garmin Messenger, Garmin Share, TracBack, Garmin Explore compatibility, health and training features, and safety features. These are part of the broader feature set; they should not all be treated as new or exclusive to Instinct 3.
Instinct 3 AMOLED or Solar?

Choose based on your normal use, not on the display label alone. AMOLED makes more sense if screen appearance is a priority and charging is convenient. Solar is the stronger fit if reducing charging matters more and your routine includes outdoor exposure.

Battery life: read the mode and conditions
Garmin’s launch materials estimate up to 24 days in smartwatch mode for Instinct 3 AMOLED, depending on case size and display settings. For Instinct 3 Solar, Garmin described battery life as unlimited under a specific solar-use assumption: all-day wear plus about three hours outdoors per day in 50,000-lux conditions. “Unlimited” does not mean unlimited GPS use in ordinary indoor, cloudy or low-light conditions. Garmin also said the 50 mm Instinct 3 Solar could provide more than five times the GPS-mode battery life of Instinct 2 Solar when solar-charging conditions are met; that is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent test.
Garmin’s Instinct E figures vary by size and operating mode:

These are Garmin estimates, not guaranteed runtimes. GPS settings, notifications, sensors, activity tracking, display behavior and connected accessories can change real-world battery life. Do not compare a days-long smartwatch estimate with a GPS-hours figure as if they describe the same use.

The comparison is about product positioning, not a guarantee that every feature is identical across sizes, regional variants or software versions. Garmin’s product information identifies Instinct 3’s metal-reinforced bezel, flashlight, solar charging and AMOLED as premium differentiators. Navigation is not the same as full topographic mapping
Garmin lists tools such as TracBack and compatibility with Garmin Explore for course planning and more detailed maps. Do not assume from those features that the watch itself provides a full-color topographic-map experience; check the specific model’s navigation functions against what you need on the trail.
Safety features are not satellite SOS
Incident detection, assistance and LiveTrack depend on a compatible paired smartphone and have operational limitations. They are not a substitute for an inReach device or another dedicated satellite communicator, and buying the watch does not itself provide cellular or satellite service.

Health data has limits
Garmin says Pulse Ox is not a medical device, and availability varies by country. Treat health readings as wellness information rather than diagnoses.
Which Instinct should you choose?
- Choose Instinct 3 AMOLED if you want the rugged Instinct design with a bright color display and do not mind charging more often.
- Choose Instinct 3 Solar if extended outdoor use and reducing charging are higher priorities than AMOLED, and your routine can provide meaningful sunlight exposure.
- Choose Instinct E if you want a rugged GPS watch centered on essential features, especially if the 40 mm size suits you better. Before paying more for Instinct 3, decide whether solar charging, its flashlight, AMOLED or its listed multi-band GPS with SatIQ matters to you.
- Compare an older Instinct 2 or 2S if you find one discounted or need a particular feature or size. Instinct E’s 40 mm case makes it relevant to smaller-watch buyers, but it should not automatically be treated as a direct Instinct 2S replacement; compare the exact feature that matters.
For international buyers, prices, colors, availability, Garmin Pay bank support, messaging and some health features can vary by region. Garmin also released feature updates for Instinct 3 and Instinct E during 2025; current software and feature availability can depend on model and region. Garmin’s update announcement provides context, while live product information is the better source for a purchase-specific check. The later Instinct 3 Tactical Edition was announced separately, so it should not be conflated with this January 2025 lineup. Garmin’s newsroom archive includes that separate announcement.
