Garmin has not put the entire Connect app behind a paywall. Instead, it launched Garmin Connect+, an optional subscription that adds Active Intelligence insights, nutrition tracking, custom performance dashboards, enhanced LiveTrack and other newer features. Garmin said existing Connect features and historical data would remain free, although availability varies by device, activity, country and phone.

Connect+ launched in the United States on March 27, 2025, and had expanded considerably by 2026. Here is what the tier actually does, what it costs, and who should pay for it.

Garmin Connect+ at a glance

Question Answer
What is it? An optional premium tier attached to a Garmin Connect account.
U.S. launch pricing $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year, after a 30-day trial announced by Garmin.
What is the headline feature? Active Intelligence, which generates personalized health and fitness insights in the Connect mobile app.
Is the whole app paid? No. Garmin said existing Connect features and data would remain free.
Who should consider it? Users who will regularly use nutrition tracking, custom dashboards, enhanced LiveTrack or Garmin’s additional coaching tools.

Garmin’s original announcement described Connect+ as a broader premium package, not simply a chatbot added to a free app.

What Garmin Connect+ is

Garmin Connect remains the companion app for Garmin watches, cycling computers, scales and other products. It continues to sync activities and display existing health, training and wellness data without requiring Connect+.

  • Wheelchair mode tracks pushes — rather than steps — and includes push and handcycle activities with preloaded workouts for strength, cardio, HIIT, Pilates and yoga, challenges specific to wheelchair users and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)

Connect+ is a subscription layer for newer or enhanced capabilities. That distinction matters: buying a Garmin watch does not automatically make every future Connect feature free, but Garmin’s launch position was that the core experience and data owners already had would remain available without the subscription.

What Garmin’s AI actually does

Garmin calls its AI feature Active Intelligence. It uses a user’s Garmin health and activity information to produce periodic personalized insights and suggestions. Garmin initially described the feature as being released in beta, with insights appearing throughout the day and becoming more tailored as the system gathered information about activities and goals.

It is better understood as an app-based insight generator than as a general-purpose conversational assistant. Garmin’s support documentation does not establish that Active Intelligence is a ChatGPT-style chatbot, nor does it describe a full on-watch conversation experience. Insights appear in the Connect app, not necessarily on the Garmin device itself. Garmin says an insight remains available for 15 minutes after it is viewed.

Active Intelligence requires an opt-in. Garmin’s current documented path is:

  1. Open the Garmin Connect app.
  2. Select More.
  3. Open Settings.
  4. Select Garmin Connect+.
  5. Choose Feature Settings.
  6. Open Data & Privacy.
  7. Select Agree to opt in.

To stop participating, follow the same path and choose Opt Out. Menu names can differ by app version, language, phone platform and account status. Garmin’s support page says Active Intelligence insights stop being generated after the subscription ends.

What features are behind Connect+?

Feature What it adds Limitations
Active Intelligence Personalized health, fitness and, later, nutrition insights. Requires opt-in; delivered through the mobile app; initially labeled beta.
Performance Dashboard Custom charts combining health, wellness, training, strength and nutrition data. Charts and metrics depend on the data collected and device support.
Nutrition tracking Food logging, calories, macronutrients, goals and nutrition reports. Exact entry and device capabilities vary.
Live activity Expanded tracking for compatible indoor workouts using a phone and supported Garmin device. Requires compatible hardware, activity and setup.
Garmin Coach extras Additional guidance and educational content for selected plans. Not every plan or device receives the same functionality.
Enhanced LiveTrack Expanded live activity sharing, including text notifications and a profile page. Phone connectivity, permissions and Garmin’s LiveTrack requirements still apply.
Garmin Trails Route discovery in selected areas. Availability is regional and device-specific.
Challenges and profiles Exclusive badges, profile frames and, in current documentation, double challenge points. Useful mainly to users who participate in Garmin’s social features.

Garmin’s Performance Dashboard explanation says the system offers more than 140 premade chart types. Garmin’s July 2026 documentation also lists nutrition reports, customized graphs, device-based nutrition overviews on compatible products, double challenge points and profile-avatar frames.

Nutrition is now a major part of the subscription

Connect+ has expanded beyond training analytics. Depending on the app, account and device, users can search a food database, scan packaged-food barcodes, log meals manually, set calorie and macronutrient goals, and review protein, carbohydrate, fat and calorie totals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some coverage also describes AI-assisted image recognition for foods or restaurant meals. That can reduce the effort required to create a log, but it should be treated as a convenience estimate rather than a precise nutritional measurement. Portion size, food matching, restaurant recipes and database entries can all introduce error. Review the suggested food and serving size before relying on the result.

Garmin’s documentation confirms nutrition logging and reporting, while support varies by model. Reported compatible products include newer models such as the fēnix 8 family, Forerunner 570 and 970, Instinct 3 variants, Venu 4, Venu X1 and vívoactive 6, with some older watches using Connect IQ. This is not a universal Connect+ compatibility list: check the manual or feature-specific Garmin support page for the exact watch.

What remains free?

Garmin said existing Connect features and data would remain free. For a typical Garmin owner, that means the watch can continue recording and syncing activities, while the app retains access to historical health and activity information and standard Garmin metrics.

The important qualification is that “existing features” does not mean every future feature. Garmin can place new or enhanced capabilities—such as custom dashboards, premium nutrition tools or expanded social functions—inside Connect+. The result is not a subscription-only Garmin app, but a free core app with a growing premium layer.

What changed after the 2025 launch?

The original launch centered on Active Intelligence, the performance dashboard, live activity, Garmin Coach extras, LiveTrack improvements and exclusive challenges. By May 2026, Garmin’s own coverage presented Connect+ as a wider package that also included nutrition tracking and Garmin Trails.

This evolution explains why launch-day descriptions are now incomplete. Someone deciding whether to subscribe in 2026 should evaluate the current combination of nutrition, dashboards, route discovery, coaching and sharing tools—not just the original AI announcement.

Pricing and the free trial

Garmin announced U.S. pricing of $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year, with a 30-day free trial. Paying annually works out to about $5.83 per month and saves $13.89 compared with twelve monthly payments at the announced price:

$6.99 × 12 = $83.88
$83.88 − $69.99 = $13.89

Those figures are the U.S. prices Garmin announced at launch, not a guarantee of the amount every customer will see in 2026. Taxes, country, currency, account status and current checkout terms can change the final price. Confirm the amount on Garmin’s annual-plan page or monthly-plan page before subscribing.

What happens if you cancel?

Garmin says Active Intelligence stops generating new insights after the subscription ends. Your historical Garmin health and activity data should remain part of the free Connect experience under Garmin’s stated policy.

Premium dashboards, nutrition functions, LiveTrack enhancements and other Connect+ tools may become unavailable or restricted after cancellation. The exact behavior is feature-specific, so do not assume that every premium report remains viewable indefinitely. If a particular dashboard or nutrition history matters to you, check Garmin’s current terms and export or record information you need before ending the subscription.

Privacy and data controls

Active Intelligence requires a separate opt-in through Garmin Connect’s data and privacy settings. Garmin says the AI was designed to help keep user data secure, but that is a company statement rather than an independent privacy or accuracy certification.

Anyone uncomfortable with algorithmic analysis of personal health and activity data can leave Active Intelligence disabled. Also remember that AI-generated suggestions are not medical advice, and no accuracy benchmark for Garmin’s insights was established in the supplied documentation.

Is Garmin Connect+ worth paying for?

It may be worthwhile if you:

  • Want nutrition, training, sleep and activity information connected inside Garmin’s ecosystem.
  • Will actively use custom performance dashboards and trend comparisons.
  • Use a supported Garmin Coach plan and value its additional guidance.
  • Rely on LiveTrack and would benefit from its expanded sharing features.
  • Prefer paying for an integrated convenience layer rather than assembling several separate apps.

It is probably poor value if you:

  • Mainly need GPS recording, sleep data, standard Garmin metrics, training status and activity history.
  • Expect a conversational AI coach or on-watch chatbot.
  • Already use a nutrition app you prefer.
  • Review trends only occasionally.
  • Object to recurring fees after buying an expensive Garmin device.
  • Own a model that does not support the particular premium feature you want.

The strongest reason to subscribe is a specific recurring use case—not the word “AI” by itself. Identify the one feature you want, verify that your exact device supports it, then use the trial to determine whether it changes your routine.

How it compares with alternatives

COROS is the clearest option for subscription-averse sports-watch buyers. In a May 2026 TechRadar interview, COROS CEO Lewis Wu said the company had no subscription plan on its roadmap at that time, while acknowledging that future decisions could change. COROS will not replicate Garmin’s device range, training ecosystem or Garmin Trails experience, but its position appeals to buyers who want companion-app features without a current Garmin-style fee.

Amazfit and Zepp are relevant for users interested in AI-assisted food recognition without the same Connect+ requirement for that feature, according to Android Central. They are less compelling for athletes who specifically prioritize Garmin’s endurance metrics, navigation and sensor ecosystem.

Polar has also been discussed as a subscription-based alternative with AI-oriented coaching features, although current pricing and availability should be checked separately.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Oura and WHOOP are more subscription-centric ecosystems aimed heavily at sleep, recovery and health insights. They may suit users who prioritize those areas, but they are not direct replacements for a traditional Garmin multisport watch with built-in GPS and endurance-focused features.

Garmin Connect+ is also only one item in Garmin’s wider subscription portfolio, alongside services such as Outdoor Maps+, Garmin Golf and LTE-related plans. It should not be confused with those separate offerings.

Bottom line

Garmin’s change is best described as the launch of an optional AI-powered premium tier—not the conversion of Garmin Connect into a subscription-only app. The free core app and existing data remain central to the Garmin experience, while Connect+ charges for newer personalization, nutrition, dashboard, sharing and social features.

For most owners, the decision comes down to usage. Skip it if you only need Garmin’s established recording and analysis tools. Consider it if you will regularly use nutrition logging, custom performance analysis, enhanced LiveTrack or Garmin’s integrated coaching and insight features—and confirm compatibility and local pricing first.
