Garmin’s Enduro 3 is an endurance-first GPS smartwatch announced in August 2024, not a new 2026 reveal. Garmin rates it for up to 36 days in smartwatch mode, or up to 90 days with solar charging, and up to 120 hours of GPS tracking, or up to 320 hours with solar under stated sunlight conditions.
Those numbers make the Enduro 3 compelling for ultra-runners, hikers and expedition users—but they are mode-specific maximums, not a promise of ordinary use. Its battery advantage comes from a large 51 mm case, an efficient transflective MIP display, third-generation solar charging and aggressive power-management options.
What Garmin Enduro 3 is
Garmin positioned the Enduro 3 as a lightweight ultraperformance GPS smartwatch for ultra-endurance events, trail running, hiking, long expeditions and outdoor work. It is the successor to the Enduro 2 and launched alongside the fēnix 8 generation in late August 2024, with availability varying by market.

In the United States, Garmin’s comparison pages list the Enduro 3 at $899.99. That is a U.S. price signal and may change with promotions, stock and regional taxes; buyers should check the price for their country and configuration.

Garmin’s launch announcement emphasizes lighter construction, solar endurance, mapping, training tools and long-distance tracking rather than conventional smartwatch features.

These figures come from Garmin’s official battery table and the Enduro 3 owner’s manual. “Up to” matters: actual endurance changes with wrist-based heart-rate monitoring, pulse oximetry, phone notifications, GPS conditions, connected sensors, music, screen settings and how often activities are recorded.
What the solar figures really mean
Garmin’s headline smartwatch estimate of 90 days assumes all-day wear plus three hours outdoors per day in 50,000-lux conditions. The solar GPS figures also assume outdoor use at 50,000 lux. That is bright outdoor light—not a guarantee that ordinary indoor wear or occasional daylight will replace charging.

It does not mean the watch cannot discharge at night, in shade, during cloudy or wintry weather, under sleeves, or during sustained high-power use. The watch also does not solar-charge while connected to external power or when the battery is full, and charging may be limited at extreme temperatures.

For a multi-day hike in open sunlight, solar can materially extend the interval between charges. For an office-based wearer, the benefit may be much smaller. Garmin advises keeping the watch face uncovered to maximize solar charging.
Why Enduro 3 lasts so long
- Transflective MIP display: The 1.4-inch memory-in-pixel screen uses reflected light and is designed for efficiency and outdoor readability. It is less vivid than an AMOLED panel, but consumes less power.
- Third-generation solar charging: The solar technology is integrated into the display and is intended to add useful energy during outdoor use.
- Large 51 mm case: The large format accommodates the battery capacity and solar surface area, but also makes the watch thick and substantial.
- Power modes: Battery Saver, Max Battery GPS and Expedition GPS reduce or alter tracking behavior to prioritize endurance.
- Adaptive satellite selection: SatIQ can select an appropriate satellite mode when conditions allow, avoiding the constant power cost of the most demanding setting.
Garmin claims a substantial improvement over the Enduro 2, including an improvement of around 200% or more in some comparisons. That is Garmin’s claim, not an independent measurement.
Mode choice matters more than the headline number
GPS-only mode is rated for up to 120 hours, or 320 hours with solar. That is not the same as continuous multi-band tracking: all satellite systems with multi-band is rated for up to 60 hours, or 90 hours with solar. Multi-band improves positioning in challenging environments, but it uses more power.
Music is another sharp trade-off. All satellite systems with music is rated for only up to 22 hours, and Garmin does not provide a solar extension for that combination. A runner planning a long event should therefore distinguish between recording a route, using multi-band positioning and playing stored music—all three together draw more power than the simplest GPS profile.

For a 100-mile race, the standard GPS-only rating provides considerable theoretical headroom. A weeklong trek can also fit comfortably within the published GPS-only range. But those are comparisons with Garmin’s stated maximums, not independent real-world tests, and poor satellite reception, sensors, music and cold conditions can reduce the margin.
Features beyond battery life
The Enduro 3 is not simply a large battery attached to a basic tracker. Its feature set overlaps heavily with Garmin’s premium multisport watches:
- Built-in TopoActive maps and dynamic round-trip routing
- Multi-band GPS and SatIQ
- Trail-running tools, grade-adjusted pace and Trail Run VO2 Max
- Training readiness, training status, recovery time and daily suggested workouts
- Sleep score, Sleep Coach, HRV-related insights, stress and Body Battery
- Pulse Ox tracking, which can reduce endurance when used continuously or frequently
- Garmin Pay and music storage with compatible streaming services
- Built-in LED flashlight
- Incident detection, Assistance and LiveTrack when paired with a compatible phone
- Touchscreen controls alongside physical buttons
- 10 ATM water rating

Enduro 3 versus Garmin fēnix 8
The Enduro 3 is not automatically a replacement for every fēnix 8. The right choice depends on whether endurance or smartwatch presentation and interaction matter more.

Garmin lists the 51 mm AMOLED fēnix 8 at up to 29 days in smartwatch mode, compared with up to 36 days for Enduro 3; Enduro 3’s solar rating rises to up to 90 days under Garmin’s assumptions. The comparison is therefore not merely about battery capacity: it is also MIP versus AMOLED, buttons and efficiency versus richer visuals and voice hardware.

The Enduro 3 makes the most sense when charging avoidance is a primary requirement and the buyer will use its navigation and training features.

- Ultra-endurance athletes: Long races benefit from extended GPS recording and physical controls.
- Backpackers and expedition users: Multi-day navigation is where solar and Expedition GPS have the clearest value.
- Outdoor professionals: Workers spending long periods outside can benefit more from solar input than office-based users.
- Battery-focused Garmin buyers: It combines premium maps, multi-band GPS, training analytics, sapphire protection and a flashlight without charging every few days.
- Button-oriented users: Physical controls remain useful in rain, cold and demanding activities.
Who should skip it?
- AMOLED enthusiasts: The MIP display is efficient and readable, but it will not match AMOLED’s color, contrast and visual impact.
- Small-wristed users: A 51 × 51 × 15.7 mm watch can be uncomfortable under sleeves or during sleep.
- Voice-feature users: Enduro 3 does not provide the fēnix 8’s microphone, speaker, voice calling or voice-command hardware.
- Casual fitness users: Maps, multi-band GPS and expedition modes may not justify the price or size.
- Conventional smartwatch buyers: Apple Watch and Wear OS devices generally offer a richer app, calling and interactive smartwatch experience, although they usually require more frequent charging.
- Mostly indoor users: Solar gains may be limited, making the premium for the Enduro line harder to justify.
Enduro 3 compared with cheaper Garmin options
The 50 mm Garmin Instinct 3 Solar is the value-oriented alternative. Garmin lists it at $399.99 on the comparison page supplied for this article. It offers solar charging, multi-band GPS, a flashlight and Garmin Pay, but it does not provide the Enduro 3’s built-in maps, premium sapphire lens, music storage and higher-end endurance/navigation package.
For runners and triathletes who want a lighter, more focused training watch, a Forerunner model may be more sensible. The Forerunner 955 Solar offers maps and solar charging but has lower battery ratings and an older platform. A fēnix 8 Solar is the more conventional premium multisport choice, while Enduro 3 remains the battery-first option.
Prices and availability for all of these models vary by country, configuration, promotion and date, so comparisons should use the same market and case size.

The practical verdict
Garmin Enduro 3 is compelling if the central problem is charging during long GPS activities or extended time outdoors. Its most important advantage is not one isolated “90-day” claim: it is the combination of long baseline endurance, solar assistance, efficient MIP hardware, maps, multi-band GPS and expedition-oriented power modes.
But the biggest figures require bright outdoor conditions and carefully chosen modes. A buyer who uses multi-band GPS, continuous sensors, phone connectivity and music should expect a much smaller battery margin than the headline smartwatch rating suggests. For AMOLED quality, voice interaction, smaller sizes or a cheaper fitness watch, the fēnix 8, Instinct 3 Solar or Forerunner range may be a better fit.
