Garmin announced the fēnix 8 Series on August 27, 2024. The launch brought an AMOLED option to the fēnix family, plus a built-in speaker and microphone, supported offline voice commands, a flashlight and dive features. But the headline claim of a “new GPS chip” needs correcting: independent analysis found that the fēnix 8 uses the same GPS components and multi-band design as the fēnix 7 Pro and Epix Pro (Gen 2).
In other words, the fēnix 8 is a significant product-line and display update—not a clearly documented new GPS hardware generation.

Garmin’s launch announcement positioned the fēnix 8 as the company’s broadest premium multisport outdoor watch. It also consolidated the roles previously split between fēnix and Epix-style models: buyers can now choose an AMOLED or solar fēnix without moving to a separate product family.
AMOLED and solar are different priorities
The AMOLED fēnix 8 offers higher contrast, richer colors and a more polished presentation for maps, workouts and everyday smartwatch use. It is available in 43 mm, 47 mm and 51 mm cases, making it the more flexible choice for smaller wrists as well as buyers who want maximum AMOLED battery life.

The solar models retain Garmin’s always-visible memory-in-pixel-style display and add solar charging to extend endurance in suitable light. They come in 47 mm and 51 mm sizes. Solar does not eliminate charging, but it is the better choice for multi-day races, expeditions and users who want to minimize time connected to a charger.
AMOLED has an important cost: battery life falls sharply when its always-on mode is enabled. Garmin’s owner’s manual also notes that image persistence or burn-in is normal AMOLED behavior and recommends avoiding static images at high brightness for long periods.
Battery life: the mode matters
The following are Garmin’s stated “up to” estimates. Actual results vary with GPS mode, display settings, music, notifications, sensors and connected accessories.

Garmin also rates the 47 mm AMOLED model for up to 81 hours in maximum-battery GPS mode and the 51 mm model for up to 145 hours. The 51 mm AMOLED version is rated for up to 31 days in expedition mode. Garmin’s launch figures give the 51 mm solar model up to 48 days in smartwatch mode with always-on display.
The practical choice is straightforward: select AMOLED for display quality and maps, or solar for endurance and constant visibility. Do not compare a gesture-mode smartwatch figure with an always-on figure as if they were equivalent.
Is the fēnix 8 GPS chip new?
There is no strong evidence that the fēnix 8 introduced an entirely new GPS-chip platform. Garmin advertises multi-band GPS/GNSS and SatIQ, which automatically balances positioning accuracy and battery use. Its Auto Select setting is designed to provide strong accuracy while prioritizing battery life; Garmin explains the behavior in its satellite-settings documentation.

However, DC Rainmaker’s independent assessment reported the same GPS components and multi-band/dual-frequency design as the fēnix 7 Pro and Epix Pro. Testing found excellent performance in cities, mountains, hiking, running and open-water swimming, but that represents continuity from Garmin’s recent flagship watches rather than a verified chip-generation breakthrough.

Antenna design, firmware, satellite mode, battery-saving settings and surroundings—including buildings, cliffs and tree cover—all affect a recorded track. Multi-band can improve difficult-environment accuracy, but it cannot guarantee a perfect route under every condition.
What the built-in speaker and microphone do
The speaker and microphone allow the original fēnix 8 to make and answer phone calls when paired with a compatible smartphone. They also enable supported voice commands, including starting a strength activity, setting a timer and saving a waypoint. Some commands work offline, but this is not an unrestricted voice assistant.

The regular fēnix 8 is not a cellular or satellite phone. Calls and many connected communications require the paired phone, Bluetooth range and network access. Do not confuse it with the later fēnix 8 Pro family, which is a separate product line with inReach connectivity.
The less obvious fēnix 8 upgrades
- Dive support: scuba and apnea profiles, leakproof metal buttons, a new sensor guard and a depth sensor designed for readings from 0 to 40 meters.
- Water resistance: the manual specifies a 10 ATM rating. A 40-meter capability does not make the watch suitable for every technical-diving scenario; follow Garmin’s limitations and normal dive-safety procedures.
- Flashlight: the built-in LED includes adjustable brightness, red light and strobe modes.
- Training: advanced strength plans and sport-specific workouts complement training readiness, endurance score, hill score, VO₂ max and training status.
- Connected tools: Garmin Messenger, Garmin Share, Garmin Pay, music services and safety features are available where supported, with phone, account or network prerequisites depending on the function.
Garmin’s official product page lists the available configurations and features. Titanium and sapphire versions can improve durability and reduce weight in some configurations, but they also raise the price; sapphire can be more reflective than standard glass.

Which size should you choose?
- 43 mm: the smallest AMOLED option and the best fit for smaller wrists. Its trade-off is the shortest battery life.
- 47 mm: the most balanced option for many buyers, combining a manageable case with substantially better endurance than 43 mm.
- 51 mm: the endurance specialist. It offers the longest battery life but is the largest and potentially heaviest case.
Compare thickness, weight, bezel material, lens type and strap configuration—not just case diameter. A smaller case may fit better, while a larger one can be worthwhile for ultra-distance events or expedition use.

Who should buy the fēnix 8?
Buy the AMOLED version if:
- You prioritize color, contrast, maps and a premium smartwatch appearance.
- You want the most visible upgrade from a non-AMOLED fēnix.
- You want speaker, microphone and supported voice-command features.
- You need a 43 mm option or want the long GPS endurance of the 51 mm AMOLED model.
Buy the solar version if:
- You regularly spend several days away from charging.
- You prefer a display that remains visible without gesture activation.
- You value expedition and ultra-endurance battery life above AMOLED presentation.
Keep a fēnix 7 Pro or Epix Pro if:
- Your current watch already has multi-band GPS, an LED flashlight and Garmin’s recent sensor platform.
- You do not need calls, voice commands or dive features.
- The fēnix 8 commands a substantial price premium in your market.
For road runners and triathletes who do not need a rugged, dive-rated case or expedition battery, a Forerunner may be lighter and better value. Ultrarunners should also consider Garmin’s Enduro range. Apple Watch Ultra and premium Wear OS watches are stronger choices for cellular independence, apps and phone-replacement features, provided you accept more frequent charging and ecosystem constraints.
Safety and assistance tools connected through Garmin services are supplemental, not a replacement for a primary emergency service. Likewise, solar charging extends endurance but does not remove the need to plan charging for long trips.
