Verdict: The Garmin HRM-Dual is still a capable, straightforward chest-strap heart-rate sensor if you find it at a meaningful discount and only need live heart rate over ANT+ or Bluetooth. It is a poor buy at a price close to Garmin’s newer HRM 200, and it is the wrong strap for swimming, watch-free workout recording, or advanced running metrics.

Its enduring appeal is simple: broad device compatibility, a replaceable CR2032 battery rated for up to 3.5 years at one hour of use per day, and a washable strap with a detachable sensor. The trade-offs are an older screw-fastened battery door, no onboard workout storage, and uncertain current availability in Garmin’s U.S. catalog. Garmin’s product page and manual specifications describe the features and limits behind that verdict.

What the HRM-Dual does—and what it doesn’t

The HRM-Dual is an electrical chest-strap heart-rate monitor. You wear it around your chest, and it sends live heart-rate data to a compatible watch, cycling computer, phone app, or piece of fitness equipment. It transmits over both ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), and Garmin lists Zwift and compatible gym equipment among its intended uses. Garmin’s HRM-Dual page

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It can also transmit beat-to-beat information used by compatible devices or apps for HRV-related functions. That is not the same as the strap independently analyzing recovery, storing an HRV history, or supplying every recovery feature available on a Garmin watch. The HRM-Dual is a live sensor, not a watch or an activity recorder.

Garmin HRM 600, Premium Heart Rate Monitor, M-XL
  • Sends accurate real-time heart rate and HRV data to compatible Garmin smartwatches and cycling computers, fitness equipment, and apps
  • Comfortable machine-washable strap is available in two sizes (XS–S and M–XL) for the most ideal fit for your body type
  • Understand how much you slow down when your foot hits the ground with step speed loss, and improve your running form with additional running dynamics, including stride length, vertical oscillation and ground contact time balance (requires compatible smartwatch)
  • During activities where you can’t wear a watch, such as team sports, HRM 600 will record the workout and sync data, including heart rate, calories, speed, distance and more, directly to the Garmin Connect smartphone app
  • Tracks daily metrics, including estimated steps, heart rate, calories burned and more, and syncs that data directly to the Garmin Connect smartphone app

That distinction matters: it does not store a workout for later syncing, add Garmin running dynamics, or transmit heart rate during swimming. If you take off your watch or phone, the HRM-Dual has no recording to retrieve afterward.

Accuracy: what a chest strap can—and can’t—promise

The HRM-Dual measures electrical signals associated with heartbeats at the chest. Chest straps are often preferred over wrist-based optical sensors when heart rate changes quickly, such as during intervals, and can be useful for cycling, strength work, and cold-weather exercise. That sensing method is a reason to consider a chest strap, not proof that every reading from this particular unit is error-free. Garmin’s product descriptions are not an independent, controlled accuracy test, and no defensible accuracy percentage is available here.

A displayed number depends on more than the sensor: electrode contact, strap fit, movement, sweat and salt buildup, wireless connection, and the receiving watch or app all matter. For a better chance of stable readings:

  • Moisten the electrode areas before putting on the strap.
  • Wear it snugly below the chest muscles, with the electrodes staying in contact as you move.
  • Clean the strap regularly; sweat and residue can affect contact.
  • Remove the module from the strap after exercise if you want to reduce the chance it remains active between sessions.
  • If readings become erratic, check fit and cleanliness, then consider whether the elastic has stretched or the battery is low.

Garmin’s support material recommends wetting and cleaning the strap when addressing erratic readings and sweat buildup. Garmin HRM-Dual support

Comfort, fit, and strap care

The adjustable strap covers chest circumferences from 64 to 132 cm (25 to 52 inches), and the sensor module detaches so you can wash the strap. Those are practical features, but they do not make a chest strap comfortable for everyone. Body shape, clothing, sweat, strap tension, and sensitivity to pressure all influence fit. A poorly adjusted strap may shift or chafe; an elastic strap can also lose tension with use.

Remove the module before washing the strap. Garmin’s support page is the place to check the current care instructions for your unit; do not put the electronics through a strap wash. The module’s separability is useful, but it also means washing takes an extra step. And while the electronics may outlast the elastic, Garmin’s current U.S. catalog search results do not clearly establish that a listed replacement strap is specifically compatible with the HRM-Dual. Verify compatibility before buying a replacement rather than assuming any Garmin HRM strap will fit. Garmin U.S. heart-rate-monitor category

ANT+ and Bluetooth: compatibility in practice

ANT+ is useful for multi-device setups

ANT+ is a strong point if you use compatible Garmin watches or Edge cycling computers, an indoor trainer, or gym equipment that accepts the ANT+ heart-rate profile. Garmin states there is no practical limit to the number of ANT+ connections. The receiving device still needs to support the appropriate sensor profile; ANT+ branding alone does not guarantee that every accessory can receive heart rate.

Bluetooth works with two devices at once

The HRM-Dual supports up to two simultaneous BLE connections. That can cover a straightforward setup such as a phone running a training app plus a compatible watch or machine, but it is a limit to remember if you want several apps and devices connected at once. ANT+ can be more flexible for a multi-receiver arrangement. A phone or app also needs to support the relevant connection method; many phones do not receive ANT+ heart rate natively without compatible hardware.

Garmin lists Zwift as a supported use case, but actual pairing depends on the device and connection method available in your setup. Before buying, check that the watch, bike computer, phone app, or machine you intend to use can receive an external heart-rate sensor. Garmin HRM-Dual product page

General pairing steps

  1. Put on the strap and moisten the electrode areas to wake the sensor and improve contact.
  2. Open the receiver’s sensor, accessory, or heart-rate menu.
  3. Choose the option labelled something like Add Sensor or Add Accessory; wording varies by device and app.
  4. Select the HRM-Dual when it appears, save the pairing, then start an activity and confirm the receiver is using external heart-rate data.

If it will not pair, make sure the strap is on and fitted, remove the old sensor entry from the receiver, and try again with other nearby paired devices out of range. Restarting Bluetooth or the receiving device may help. After changing the battery, Garmin says pairing may need to be repeated. Testing with a second compatible receiver can help isolate whether the issue is the strap or the original device. Garmin battery replacement instructions

Battery life and how to replace it

Garmin rates the CR2032 battery for up to 3.5 years at one hour of use per day. That is a usage-based rating, not a promise that every unit’s battery will last 3.5 elapsed years. Actual life can vary with use, storage, battery age and quality, and contact conditions. Unlike newer designs with easier access or rechargeable power, the HRM-Dual requires a screwdriver to open its module.

Garmin’s replacement procedure specifies four screws. Units produced from September 2020 onward use Torx T5 screws; older units produced before September 2020 may use Phillips #00. The documented steps are:

  1. Remove the four screws from the back of the module and lift off the cover.
  2. Remove the old battery, then wait 30 seconds.
  3. Install a new CR2032 with its positive side facing up.
  4. Keep the O-ring gasket in place and undamaged.
  5. Replace the cover and screws without overtightening.
  6. Pair the sensor again if the receiving device no longer recognizes it.

A lost or damaged O-ring can compromise water resistance; overtightening can damage the cover or screws. If the unit still misbehaves after a fresh battery, worn strap material, dirty or corroded contacts, or a damaged module may be responsible instead. A battery change is not a cure for every sensor problem. Garmin’s battery instructions

Water resistance is not swimming support

The HRM-Dual has a 1 ATM water rating, but Garmin explicitly says it does not transmit heart-rate data while swimming. Do not read the rating as swim tracking: it addresses water pressure, not the ability to send a live signal during a swim. If you want to capture swim heart rate, Garmin points to higher-tier straps such as the HRM-Pro Plus or HRM 600, which support storage and forwarding features subject to compatible-device requirements. How it compares with newer Garmin straps

Model Best for Why choose it over the HRM-Dual When the HRM-Dual may make more sense
HRM 200 Basic live heart rate and HRV transmission Newer model with two strap sizes, a machine-washable strap, and clearer current Garmin support. Garmin announced it at a $79.99 suggested retail price in January 2025; it is rated for up to one year of battery life. If the HRM-Dual is substantially cheaper, its wider 25–52-inch fit range or longer rated battery life may matter.
HRM-Pro Plus Runners and multisport athletes needing more than live heart rate Offers Garmin features including running dynamics, indoor running pace and distance, swim heart-rate storage, and watch-free activity data. Its launch MSRP was $129.99. If you only need a live heart-rate signal and do not use the extra features.
HRM 600 Advanced Garmin users wanting rechargeable power and standalone features Garmin positions it as a premium strap with advanced running metrics, activity recording, and swim-related capabilities. Garmin’s U.S. category listing showed $169.99. If those extra metrics and recording features would go unused, it is more strap than you need.

The HRM 200 is the most direct modern comparison for basic use. Garmin introduced it in January 2025 with a $79.99 suggested retail price, two sizing options, and up to one year of battery life. The HRM-Dual’s main counterpoints are its longer rated battery life, broader listed strap range, and potentially lower clearance price—not a richer feature set. Check actual prices and availability at purchase time; the HRM-Dual is not prominently listed in Garmin’s current U.S. heart-rate-monitor catalog, but that does not establish a global discontinuation date. HRM 200 announcement · HRM 200 product page · Garmin U.S. monitor lineup

Pay extra for the HRM-Pro Plus or HRM 600 only if you will use their advanced features, such as running dynamics, swim data storage, or recording activity without wearing a watch. The HRM-Dual cannot be upgraded into those functions through a firmware setting or a different receiver; they are different product capabilities. Who should buy the HRM-Dual?

  • Buy it if you want a basic live heart-rate sensor for a compatible Garmin watch, Edge computer, indoor trainer, or app.
  • Buy it if ANT+ support, dual ANT+/Bluetooth transmission, or long rated battery life matters to your setup.
  • Buy it if you find a new unit at a meaningful discount and do not need advanced data or onboard storage.
  • Choose the HRM 200 instead if you want Garmin’s current basic strap and support position, especially if pricing is close.
  • Choose a higher-tier strap if swimming, watch-free recording, running dynamics, or indoor pace and distance are requirements.

Because availability varies by region and retailer, evaluate the listing itself: new, open-box, and used stock are not equivalent. A coin cell in old stock may have been sitting for a long time, and the elastic or electrodes of a used strap may be worn even if the electronics still pair. For an older product, confirmed replacement-strap compatibility is worth checking before purchase.

Common problems and fixes

Erratic or implausible heart-rate readings

Start with the basics: wet the electrodes, tighten the strap enough to maintain contact, clean off sweat or salt residue, and inspect the elastic for stretching. A low battery, poor contact, wireless interference, or damage can also cause problems. If a fresh battery and careful setup do not help, test with another compatible receiver before assuming the strap is defective. Garmin HRM support

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It will not connect

Wear the strap to wake it, remove an old pairing from the receiver, and try again with other nearby paired devices temporarily disconnected. Confirm the receiver supports the protocol you are using; a phone app that accepts Bluetooth heart rate may not receive ANT+ without additional compatible hardware. Replace the CR2032 if needed, then pair again.

The battery seems to drain quickly

Garmin’s rating is conditional, and a strap left damp or with the module attached between sessions may not behave like one used for an hour a day and stored carefully. Check battery age and contacts as well. Reports of unusual drain are not a measure of how frequently this happens, and a new battery will not address damaged contacts or a hardware fault.

Availability and value in 2026

The HRM-Dual remains relevant as a simple dual-protocol sensor, but Garmin’s current U.S. lineup prominently features the HRM 200, HRM-Fit, HRM-Pro Plus, and HRM 600 instead. Garmin’s regional product pages remain available, so it is more accurate to call the HRM-Dual a legacy or regionally available model than to claim it has been discontinued everywhere. Price and stock can vary by market and seller. Garmin U.S. heart-rate-monitor category · Garmin HRM-Dual product page

There is no single current HRM-Dual price to recommend across regions. Compare the actual offer—including condition and return policy—with Garmin’s HRM 200 and any locally available alternatives. If the older strap costs nearly as much as the newer basic model, its battery advantage is unlikely to justify the older battery door and less certain parts availability for most buyers.

Final verdict

The HRM-Dual remains a useful basic chest strap for live heart rate, especially for Garmin users, cyclists, and indoor-training setups that benefit from ANT+ and Bluetooth. Its best case is a discounted, sound-condition unit used for that narrow job. It is not a swim monitor, standalone recorder, or advanced running strap, and a near-new-model price makes it hard to recommend over the HRM 200. Buy the feature set you need—not the word “Garmin” on the module.
