Apple Watch is the better everyday smartwatch for iPhone owners; Garmin is the better choice for serious training, outdoor use, and battery life. There is no universal winner: the right pick depends on your phone, how you exercise, and whether you want a connected assistant or a dedicated sports watch. Model matters, too—a Garmin Venu 3 is a different proposition from a Forerunner 965 or fēnix 8.
This comparison reflects the 2025 lineup, including Apple Watch Series 10 and Ultra 2, which were available for most of the year. Apple announced Series 11 on September 9, 2025, making it a late-year update rather than a stand-in for the full year’s Apple range. Apple’s Series 11 announcement lists up to 24 hours of battery life, sleep score, hypertension notifications, 5G cellular, and improved scratch resistance.
Choose by phone and use case first
Compatibility is the first filter. Apple Watch is built around iPhone, while Garmin watches generally pair with both iPhone and Android. A Garmin paired with iPhone does not offer Apple Watch-level system integration, and some notification and reply functions are more limited. If you use Android, Garmin is the practical choice between these two brands.

| Android phone | Garmin | Garmin generally supports Android and iPhone; Apple Watch is designed as an iPhone companion. |
| iPhone integration, calls, messages, and apps | Apple Watch | It connects more deeply with iPhone features and services. |
| Casual workouts and straightforward health tracking | Apple Watch or Garmin Venu 3 | Apple is simpler and more connected; Venu 3 offers a Garmin-style fitness focus with a more smartwatch-like feature set. |
| Running plans, recovery context, or triathlon training | Garmin Forerunner | Forerunner models are designed around sports profiles, training tools, and longer endurance. |
| Hiking, routes, and long outings | Garmin fēnix 8 or a suitable Garmin outdoor model | Garmin offers a broader outdoor and navigation-oriented range. |
| Apple ecosystem plus a rugged watch | Apple Watch Ultra 2 | It combines Apple’s apps and safety features with a larger, outdoor-oriented design. |
| Sleep tracking without frequent charging interruptions | Usually Garmin | Longer battery life makes continuous wear easier, though actual endurance varies by model and settings. |
Apple’s own Apple Watch overview emphasizes its role alongside iPhone for calls, notifications, routes, music, workouts, and Siri. Garmin’s lineup spans lifestyle, running, and rugged outdoor watches, so compare models by job rather than treating the brand as one product.

Which models are actually comparable?
Apple organizes its 2025 range around three broad tiers: SE for an entry-level watch, Series for the mainstream premium model, and Ultra for a larger, more rugged outdoor option. The Series 10 is the relevant mainstream model for most of 2025; Ultra 2 is the outdoor-oriented Apple choice.
Garmin’s families differ more sharply. Venu and vívoactive suit lifestyle and general fitness; Forerunner is aimed at runners and multisport athletes; Instinct and fēnix emphasize rugged outdoor use. Garmin’s running-watch comparison and product comparison show why one Garmin model cannot represent the whole brand.
- Apple Watch SE (2nd generation): Entry-level Apple option with fewer advanced health sensors and features.
- Apple Watch Series 10: Mainstream choice for everyday iPhone use, health features, and general workouts.
- Apple Watch Ultra 2: Larger, rugged Apple option with outdoor-focused hardware and longer battery life than standard Apple Watch.
- Garmin vívoactive 5 or Venu 3: Better starting points for general fitness and a more lifestyle-oriented Garmin experience.
- Garmin Forerunner 165, 265, or 965: Running and multisport options, scaling from entry-level running toward premium training and navigation.
- Garmin Instinct 3 or fēnix 8: Rugged outdoor choices; fēnix 8 is the premium multisport and navigation tier.
Smartwatch features: Apple wins the daily interaction
Apple Watch is the stronger choice if you regularly answer messages, take calls, use apps, or want the watch to feel like an extension of your iPhone. It offers Siri, Apple Pay, a broader third-party app ecosystem, polished notifications, and close integration with services such as Maps, AirPods, and Fitness+. Cellular versions can let you leave your phone behind for some calls, messages, and connected tasks, subject to carrier service and setup.

A Venu 3 is more smartwatch-like than a Forerunner 165 or Instinct model. Some Garmin watches add a microphone, speaker, calls, maps, or safety-related connectivity; check the individual model rather than assuming those features are standard.
Garmin’s appeal is partly that it can keep daily interruptions secondary to the workout. During activity, physical buttons and configurable data screens make it easier to navigate training information without depending on touch controls. Apple Watch is better for everyday communication; Garmin is better at making workout information the center of the experience. For Apple’s feature overview, see Apple Watch.

Fitness and training: recording a workout is not the same as coaching it
Both brands can record common activities such as running, walking, cycling, swimming, and strength workouts. Apple Watch is a good fit for general exercise, activity trends, and people who want a simple way to start a workout. It also works with third-party training apps and Apple Fitness+. Apple describes the approach to Activity and Workout features in its Apple Watch fitness overview.
Garmin’s advantage is the breadth of its dedicated training system, especially on supported Forerunner and fēnix models. Depending on model, features can include training status and load, recovery time, training readiness, Body Battery, suggested workouts, PacePro, structured workouts, and sport-specific profiles. The appeal is not that Apple Watch cannot capture a workout; Garmin more consistently connects workouts with training load, recovery, and race preparation.

It can be overkill if you only want to exercise regularly and check a few useful trends. Apple’s simpler presentation may be easier to stick with, while Garmin asks the user to engage with a more substantial training platform.
Health and sleep: compare features, not blanket accuracy claims
Apple’s health and safety offering is broader for many everyday users. Depending on model, region, and software, Apple Watch features may include ECG, irregular rhythm notifications, fall and crash detection, respiratory or sleep-related functions, and integration with the Apple Health app. Garmin emphasizes wellness and performance trends such as sleep, stress, and Body Battery, with training readiness and recovery features on supported models.
No brand can be called universally more accurate from this comparison. Sensor results depend on model, firmware, fit and skin contact, activity, workout intensity, and the method used to compare readings. Neither watch should be treated as a medical diagnostic device. A blood-oxygen reading is not a diagnosis, and wellness or training metrics are not clinical assessments.

US Blood Oxygen availability deserves special care in a 2025 comparison. On August 14, 2025, Apple said some Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 users without the feature could receive a redesigned Blood Oxygen feature through iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1, with calculations performed on the paired iPhone. Availability depends on the specific unit, purchase location, and legal status. Check Apple’s US Blood Oxygen update before buying or relying on the feature.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHealth functions such as ECG, blood oxygen, temperature-related insights, and rhythm notifications can be model-, region-, software-, and regulation-dependent on either platform. Verify the exact watch’s feature list for your location rather than assuming a capability applies across an entire brand.
GPS, maps, and outdoor use: Garmin offers the broader toolkit
Both brands make capable GPS watches. It is too broad to say Garmin GPS is always more accurate; model, GPS mode, terrain, fit, and activity all matter. The more reliable distinction is that Garmin has a wider range of outdoor navigation and endurance tools, while Apple pairs location and route features with a more complete phone-connected experience.
Garmin is usually the more natural choice for long trail runs, route-based training, multiday hikes, and activities where maps, elevation, pace tools, and conserving battery matter. Higher-end models provide navigation features that are not representative of every Garmin watch. Physical controls are also useful with gloves, rain, or sweaty hands.
Apple Watch suits everyday route tracking, casual running and cycling, and people who want GPS alongside apps, calls, music, and iPhone-connected maps. Ultra 2 adds a larger, brighter display and rugged hardware without giving up Apple’s ecosystem. A comparison of Ultra 2 and Forerunner 965 found both capable for training, with Garmin offering more sport-specific data and Apple offering a brighter display and broader smartwatch functions: Tom’s Guide’s model comparison.

Battery life: Garmin’s clearest advantage
Battery ratings are not directly comparable unless the mode and settings are named. Garmin’s Forerunner 965 is rated for up to 23 days in smartwatch mode, 31 hours in GPS-only mode without music, and 8.5 hours with GPS and music; its smartwatch rating can fall to about seven days with always-on display enabled. Apple Watch Ultra 2 is rated for up to 36 hours of normal use or up to 72 hours in low-power mode. These are published specifications, not guaranteed real-world results; the quoted model comparison is at Tom’s Guide.
Across the 2025 generation, standard Apple Watch models generally call for daily charging, while Ultra extends the interval without matching the multi-day or multi-week endurance available from many Garmin models. Actual battery life changes with always-on display, GPS, cellular, music, maps, pulse-ox tracking, and low-power modes. Apple’s fast charging can make top-ups less disruptive, but it does not turn a frequent charging routine into Garmin-style endurance.
Battery life affects more than convenience: a watch that stays on the wrist more consistently is easier to use for sleep tracking, travel, long workouts, or a multiday outing. Either brand can handle a marathon with an appropriate model and setup; for a multiday expedition, Garmin is generally easier to live with.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Durability, comfort, and controls
Garmin’s ruggedness depends on the family: a Venu or vívoactive is not equivalent to an Instinct or fēnix. Many sports-focused Garmin models use five physical buttons, which can be easier to operate during a workout or in wet and cold conditions. The Forerunner 965 versus Ultra 2 comparison noted the Forerunner’s button control and the Apple watch’s brighter display.
Apple’s strongest outdoor package is Ultra 2: a 49 mm titanium case, flat display, Action button, and bright screen. That size and design will not suit every wrist. Standard Apple Watch models are slimmer and may feel more comfortable for everyday wear, but they offer less physical protection than Ultra. Compare the actual case size and control layout before choosing, particularly if you plan to wear the watch overnight.
Best Value
- Easy-to-use running watch monitors heart rate (this is not a medical device) at the wrist and uses GPS to track how far, how fast and where you’ve run.Special Feature:Bluetooth.
- Battery life: up to 2 weeks in smartwatch mode; up to 20 hours in GPS mode
- Plan your race day strategy with the PacePro feature (not compatible with on-device courses), which offers GPS-based pace guidance for a selected course or distance
- Run your best with helpful training tools, including race time predictions and finish time estimates
- Track all the ways you move with built-in activity profiles for running, cycling, track run, virtual run, pool swim, Pilates, HIIT, breathwork and more
Emergency features are model-specific, not a substitute for rescue gear
Supported Apple Watch models can offer Emergency SOS, fall detection, crash detection, and Find My location features; Ultra models add a siren. Cellular service can extend some communications away from an iPhone, depending on model, carrier, coverage, and setup. Garmin features may include Incident Detection, Assistance alerts, LiveTrack, and location sharing; availability varies by model and requires configuration and compatible connectivity.
Neither a watch’s emergency feature nor a phone-dependent location-sharing function should be treated as a substitute for a personal locator beacon or satellite messenger in remote terrain. Coverage, a compatible phone or cellular plan, settings, and the specific feature all affect whether an alert can be sent. The Ultra 2 and Forerunner 965 feature comparison covers examples such as Garmin Incident Detection and LiveTrack alongside Apple crash detection, Find My, and siren: see the comparison.
Direct model matchups
Apple Watch Series 10 vs. Garmin Venu 3
Choose Series 10 if iPhone integration, apps, messages, and Apple’s consumer health and safety features matter most. Choose Venu 3 if you want a more lifestyle-oriented Garmin with fitness tracking and longer battery life. Venu 3 is a closer lifestyle comparison than a Forerunner 965, but it is not a replacement for Garmin’s premium endurance training range. See Garmin Venu 3.
Apple Watch Ultra 2 vs. Garmin Forerunner 965
Ultra 2 is the stronger all-around connected watch for an iPhone user who also hikes or trains outdoors. Forerunner 965 is the more compelling dedicated training watch for runners and triathletes who value structured workouts, training context, maps, buttons, and longer battery endurance. The available comparison listed the Forerunner 965 at $599; verify current price and configuration before purchase. See Garmin Forerunner 965.
Apple Watch Ultra 2 vs. Garmin fēnix 8
Choose Ultra 2 if you want rugged Apple hardware with Apple apps, connectivity, and safety features. Choose fēnix 8 if outdoor navigation, multisport training, customization, and long endurance matter more than the richest messaging and app experience. Size, display configuration, and materials vary across fēnix 8 options; a published comparison listed it from $1,000, so check the current configuration and price rather than treating that as a universal price. See Garmin fēnix 8.
Apple Watch SE vs. Garmin Forerunner 165 or vívoactive 5
For an iPhone owner seeking an affordable everyday smartwatch, the SE is the natural Apple starting point, with fewer advanced health features than higher Apple tiers. Choose Forerunner 165 if running tools and battery life matter more; choose vívoactive 5 for general fitness rather than a running-first watch. Product details: Forerunner 165 and vívoactive 5.
Which one should you buy?
- Most iPhone owners: Apple Watch Series 10 is the balanced everyday choice for communication, health features, and general workouts. Current models and configurations are listed on Apple’s buying page.
- Outdoor-minded iPhone users: Choose Apple Watch Ultra 2 if you want Apple integration in a tougher, larger package; accept that its endurance and training workflow do not match Garmin’s strongest outdoor watches. See Apple Watch Ultra 2.
- Runners and triathletes: Choose a Forerunner, with 965 suited to premium training and navigation needs. It is a weaker fit if rich messaging, apps, and voice-assistant functions are priorities.
- Hikers and multisport users: Consider fēnix 8 when maps, physical controls, customization, and battery matter enough to justify its larger size and complexity.
- Casual fitness users who prefer Garmin: Start with Venu 3 or vívoactive 5 rather than buying an advanced Forerunner or fēnix by default.
- Android users: Choose a compatible Garmin; Apple Watch is not the practical cross-platform option.
Garmin Connect is the central platform for compatible Garmin watch history, analysis, routes, trends, and device management: Garmin Connect.
