Garmin owners have reported watches repeatedly showing the blue triangle or Garmin logo—often after starting a GPS activity or installing an update. The reports span several models, but they do not prove that every Garmin watch has a universal defect. Start with a forced shutdown, then use model-specific recovery options before considering a data-erasing reset.

What a Garmin boot loop looks like

A true boot loop repeatedly starts and fails: the watch displays the blue triangle, Garmin logo or startup animation, restarts, and repeats before reaching the watch face. It may vibrate or briefly illuminate its sensors each cycle.

  • One slow startup: not necessarily a fault.
  • Frozen on one screen: a freeze, not a repeating loop.
  • Works only while charging: investigate charging, battery or power issues as well.

Garmin groups freezing, rebooting, being stuck on the triangle and failing to power on in its general troubleshooting guidance (Garmin support).

What appears to trigger the problem?

In a January 28, 2025 report, users told Android Authority that a watch could work normally until a GPS activity or another GPS function was started. Complaints mentioned Forerunner 165, 255, 255 Music, 955 and 965, Venu 3 and epix Pro 2; reports for fēnix 7 and 8 were mixed. These are historical user reports, not Garmin’s official affected-device list.

Users associated some cases with an update file called GPE.bin in Garmin/RemoteSW. That is an unconfirmed, user-derived explanation; Garmin has not established it as the universal cause. Garmin told Android Authority it was researching blue-triangle reports and that a power-button reset might restore a device. There is no verified universal recall or permanent fix.

1. Charge the watch, then force it off

  1. Place the watch on a known-good charger and check that the contacts are clean and aligned.
  2. On a watch with a physical power button, press and hold that button until the watch actually shuts down. Garmin says this can take up to about 30 seconds, depending on the model.
  3. Release the button only after the screen is off, wait a few seconds, then press it once to restart.

This is the least-destructive step and may discard only the most recent incomplete operation. Button names and restart methods differ on buttonless products, so use the instructions for your exact model (Garmin restart guidance).

2. If it loops again, look for recovery mode

Recovery mode exists only on select Garmin products, and available choices vary by model. If a recovery menu appears, use the least-destructive option first:

  • Cancel Activity: may remove the activity that is blocking startup.
  • Automatic Recovery/Attempt Recovery: intended to repair common startup problems without normally erasing personal data.
  • Connect to Computer: lets Garmin Express attempt a firmware update or provide logs to Product Support.
  • Delete Maps: for mapping products when a map file is implicated—not a general smartwatch fix.
  • Factory Reset: last resort; it erases local data.

3. Factory reset only when you accept data loss

A reset can restore some looping watches, but it is not guaranteed and can remove settings, profile information, records, activity history, Connect IQ content and other locally stored data. Sync anything you can before proceeding. Always put your model name into Garmin’s support search first; combinations are not interchangeable.

Example: reported Forerunner-style sequence

The following sequence was reported for a Forerunner 955 by users and summarized by Android Authority. Treat it as model-specific and unofficial unless Garmin confirms it for your watch:

  5. After the second beep, release Back.

A successful reset should lead to initial setup. Garmin’s documented fēnix 5 procedure is similar but not identical: hold START/STOP and BACK after the triangle appears, release START/STOP after the first beep and BACK after the second (Garmin fēnix instructions).

Some users report that a looping watch may expose Garmin/RemoteSW and that removing GPE.bin can stop the loop. This is not an official Garmin procedure, and the file diagnosis is unconfirmed. Do not delete arbitrary files. If the watch is recognized, photograph the filename and ask Garmin Support before changing anything—especially if it contains unsynced activities. A wrong deletion can create another software failure, and the same update may download again when the watch reconnects to Garmin Connect or Wi-Fi.

After the watch boots

  1. Complete setup without immediately reconnecting the phone or Wi-Fi if the failure followed an update.
  2. Connect to a computer and run Garmin Express; install only an official repair or update it offers.
  3. Do not restore a backup until the watch completes several normal restarts.
  4. Reconnect the phone, then test a GPS activity only after startup is stable.
  5. If the loop returns after synchronization or an update, stop repeating resets and contact Garmin.

When to contact Garmin

Escalate through the Garmin Support Center if the watch cannot be powered off, never appears in Garmin Express, recovery and reset fail, charging behaves abnormally, or the loop returns after a clean setup. Tell support the exact model, when the loop began, whether GPS or an update preceded it, and any filename you saw. Garmin’s service-alerts page is the appropriate place to check for formal product or software notices.

The practical verdict

This is a reported multi-model boot-loop incident, not proof that all Garmin smartwatches are defective or permanently bricked. A forced shutdown is the safest first move. Recovery mode and Garmin Express come next; a model-specific factory reset is a data-erasing last resort. Treat the RemoteSW/GPE.bin deletion idea as an unverified workaround, not a standard fix.
