Garmin released System Software 28.02 on or around March 31, 2025, for its older fēnix 6-era flagship families: the fēnix 6 and 6 Pro, Enduro, MARQ and tactix Delta. It followed version 27.00, fully released on May 16, 2024—an interval of roughly 10½ months.
The important qualification is that 28.02 is a maintenance release, not a major feature refresh. Garmin’s official notes focus on stability, notification, routing, course-loading and Connect IQ fixes, with no major new sports, health or navigation features listed.
Which Garmin watches received version 28.02?

The announcement refers to the broader product families, so individual variants may not have received the software package at exactly the same time. Garmin also marked the release as fully available, but that does not necessarily mean every owner saw the notification simultaneously.

What changed in System Software 28.02?
The update contains eight listed changes. In practical terms, the most significant are:
- Course-loading shutdowns fixed: Garmin addressed a problem in which loading certain courses could shut down the watch. This is especially relevant to users relying on course navigation during outdoor activities.
- Continuous elevation-alert tones fixed: An issue that could cause the elevation alert to sound continuously has been corrected.
- Slower notification pop-ups fixed: Garmin addressed delayed notification displays.
- Routing and map-popularity data fixed: Pro devices received a fix for a possible problem involving popularity data while routing and drawing maps.
- MARQ Aviator flight-path setup fixed: Garmin corrected a user-interface issue affecting flight-path setup on that model.
- Storm-alert disclaimer added: A legal-disclaimer tip message was added to the storm-alert feature. This is a messaging change, not a new storm-alert capability.
- Miscellaneous bug fixes and improvements: Garmin does not identify every individual correction in this broad category.
- Connect IQ fixes and improvements: The notes do not specify which particular apps or behaviors were affected.
Because several entries are broad categories, it would be too strong to claim that 28.02 fixes a particular Connect IQ app or an unlisted battery, GPS or training problem.

No major new features are listed
Despite the long wait and the new version number, Garmin’s official change log lists no major user-facing feature additions. The update does not introduce new sports modes, health metrics, sensors or a redesigned interface.
That makes 28.02 notably smaller than System Software 27.00. The earlier release added features and changes including device-settings backup and restore, manual Wi-Fi software updates on Pro models, Bluetooth update checks, Connect IQ app ratings, ski split tracking and ski and snowboard activity-summary improvements. Garmin’s 27.00 notes provide the comparison.
Why the nearly year-long gap matters
The gap between the two stable releases was long for owners of watches that had previously received regular maintenance updates:

That is accurately described as “almost a year,” but not as more than a year when comparing the release dates. The release is meaningful because it confirms that Garmin was still issuing maintenance software for the older platform in 2025. It does not establish how long future support will continue, nor does it promise additional feature updates.

How to get the update
Garmin’s 28.02 announcement confirms the release and its changes but does not provide a complete model-specific installation walkthrough. Owners should use Garmin’s normal update process:
- Sync the watch with Garmin Connect or use Garmin’s standard desktop update method.
- Check the installed software version before beginning.
- Keep the watch adequately charged.
- Do not start an activity or interrupt the watch while the update is installing.
- If 28.02 does not appear immediately, sync again later rather than assuming the watch is unsupported.
Garmin’s “fully released” status describes release availability, not guaranteed instant delivery to every individual watch. Notification timing can differ based on the device, synchronization status, region and rollout process. Sync important activity data before troubleshooting, and do not factory-reset the watch unless Garmin support specifically recommends it.

Should owners install System Software 28.02?
Yes, if the update is offered. Owners affected by course-loading shutdowns, persistent elevation-alert tones, delayed notifications or navigation-data problems have clear reasons to install it. Other owners should still benefit from the general stability and Connect IQ fixes.
Expect a maintenance improvement rather than a transformation. Garmin has not promised better battery life, GPS accuracy or training metrics in the official notes, and the update will not give a fēnix 6 the feature set or hardware of a newer generation.

Version 28.02 slightly improves the case for buying a discounted used fēnix 6 or fēnix 6 Pro: Garmin continued to maintain the platform well after its launch. But one maintenance release is not evidence of indefinite support.

Before buying, check the watch’s battery condition, physical wear, map and sensor compatibility, Connect IQ needs, return policy and warranty coverage. Also consider whether you require newer Garmin health, training or navigation features. The older platform may be a good-value option for reliable outdoor tracking, but it is a poor fit for buyers seeking the newest capabilities, modern hardware or a long runway of feature updates.
For those priorities, compare newer Garmin watches through the company’s official smartwatch category. Current models and prices are subject to change.
The verdict
Garmin System Software 28.02 was a genuine stable update for the fēnix 6, Enduro, MARQ and tactix Delta families, arriving about 10½ months after version 27.00. Its value is practical rather than headline-grabbing: it fixes several stability and usability problems, including course-loading shutdowns and continuous elevation alerts. It should be installed by owners who receive it, but it should not be mistaken for a major new-feature release or a guarantee of long-term support.
