Garmin’s inReach Mini 3 leak was genuine, but the device is no longer just a rumor. Garmin now lists the inReach Mini 3, alongside the more capable inReach Mini 3 Plus. Both provide dedicated off-grid satellite communication, but neither is a substitute for the fēnix 8 Pro’s smartwatch, fitness, wrist-based, and LTE features.
The practical choice is straightforward: choose the Mini 3 for core satellite messaging and SOS, the Mini 3 Plus for voice and photo messaging, and the fēnix 8 Pro if you want those safety features integrated into a premium multisport watch.
What the original leak showed
The leak surfaced on November 17, 2025, after an apparent Garmin marketing email briefly displayed an unfamiliar inReach device. The image was later replaced with an inReach Mini 2 image, suggesting that Garmin had revealed the successor prematurely. Garmin Rumors reported the original image and its visible design changes, while Notebookcheck dated the report.
The leaked unit appeared to have:
- A full-color display
- A taller, redesigned rectangular body
- A red-accented antenna
- A tile-style interface
- Satellite messaging controls
- A waypoint-marking function
That image did not establish the final name, price, release date, battery rating, display technology, LTE support, or which features would belong to the standard Mini 3 versus the Plus model. It was useful evidence of an upcoming product, not a complete specification sheet.

The leak became an official product
As of August 18, 2026, Garmin lists the inReach Mini 3 on its US website and provides an official Mini 3 and Mini 3 Plus owner’s manual. The manual currently surfaced by Garmin is version 2, dated April 2026, and Garmin’s US product page indicates that the device is available to ship.
That changes the story. The question is no longer whether Garmin will release a Mini 3. It is what the two Mini 3 models actually do, and whether either makes sense for someone considering a fēnix 8 Pro.
inReach Mini 3 versus Mini 3 Plus

The standard Mini 3 is the focused option. It covers two-way satellite messaging, SOS, location tracking, weather, GPS, and compass functions without trying to become a full smartwatch.

The Mini 3 Plus is the communications upgrade. Garmin lists voice messaging, photo sending through Garmin Messenger, a larger high-resolution display, Explore map and course support, and pairing with compatible Garmin wearables and Edge computers. Garmin lists the Mini 3 Plus at 4.4 oz on its comparison material.
Battery figures need context
Garmin’s published comparison material gives the Mini 3 Plus more than one maximum battery figure, including up to 350 hours under a stated 10-minute tracking condition and up to 14 days in another use-case listing. Those numbers are not necessarily contradictory: they describe different operating assumptions.

Actual runtime will vary with tracking interval, message frequency, satellite visibility, temperature, screen use, and other settings. Maximum figures should not be treated as a guaranteed expedition runtime.
How close is it to the fēnix 8 Pro?
The Mini 3 resembles the fēnix 8 Pro only in a limited communications sense. Both product families can provide Garmin inReach satellite messaging, SOS communication, tracking or location-sharing functions, and access to Garmin Response emergency coordination.
The hardware concept is fundamentally different:
- Mini 3: a dedicated satellite communicator, generally carried on a pack or vest.
- Mini 3 Plus: a larger communication-focused communicator with voice and photo features that rely on a compatible phone.
- fēnix 8 Pro: a multisport GPS smartwatch with satellite and LTE connectivity, LTE calling, LiveTrack, fitness and training features, and wrist-based operation.
Garmin lists up to 27 days for the 51 mm fēnix 8 Pro in its comparison material, although the relevant battery mode and connectivity conditions matter. The watch also offers LTE features that should not be transferred to the Mini 3: the Mini 3 family should be treated as satellite communicators, not satellite-plus-LTE watches.
The better description is that the Mini 3 offers a more focused route to Garmin’s off-grid messaging and SOS services. It does not replicate the fēnix 8 Pro’s watch experience.
What works without a phone?
The communicator can provide core emergency connectivity from the device, provided it has been activated, has an active subscription, and can establish satellite contact. SOS is not dependent on ordinary cellular coverage.

However, “works without a phone” does not mean every feature is phone-free:

- Photo messaging on the Mini 3 Plus requires Garmin Messenger and a compatible smartphone.
- Richer messaging and navigation workflows use Garmin Messenger or Garmin Explore.
- Activation and pairing require a valid unique phone number capable of receiving a text message, according to Garmin’s activation documentation.
- Garmin says Explore-based activation can prevent receiving voice notes and using group messaging on the Mini 3 Plus; Messenger is the safer choice when those functions matter.
Before a trip, activate the device, pair the apps, send test messages, and confirm that the intended features work with the chosen subscription.
Satellite coverage is not instant connectivity
Garmin requires an active satellite subscription for messaging, SOS, tracking, and inReach Weather. The device also needs a clear view of the sky. Dense forest, canyon walls, buildings, steep terrain, poor antenna orientation, and other obstructions can delay message acquisition or delivery.
If a message does not send, move to a more open location, orient the device toward the sky, and allow additional time. Satellite messages are not equivalent to instant cellular messages.
Garmin says its SOS system uses Iridium and Skylo network coverage and routes emergency communication to Garmin Response. Garmin describes Garmin Response as a staffed emergency-coordination service that communicates with users, emergency contacts, search-and-rescue organizations, and other resources. That is coordination support, not a guarantee of immediate rescue or a particular outcome.

Mapping: useful, but not full handheld navigation
The leaked waypoint interface made the Mini 3 look more like a small navigation device, but a color screen and waypoint marking do not automatically make it a full-featured handheld GPS.
Garmin’s current comparison material positions the Mini 3 Plus around built-in GPS, a compass, Garmin Explore maps, and course following when paired with a phone. Detailed mapping is primarily an app-based experience. The Garmin product comparison positions the GPSMAP H1i Plus as the stronger choice for serious on-device mapping, with TopoActive maps and downloadable satellite imagery.
Choose the Mini 3 family if your phone is your main mapping screen. Choose a GPSMAP device if detailed maps, physical controls, and navigation in harsh conditions are more important than compactness.
Which Garmin should you buy?
Choose the inReach Mini 3 if:
- You mainly need two-way text messaging, SOS, tracking, and weather.
- You already carry a smartphone for maps and richer communication.
- You prefer a dedicated communicator to a premium smartwatch.
- Voice and photo messaging are not essential.
Choose the inReach Mini 3 Plus if:
- You want voice messaging or photo sharing outside cellular coverage.
- You will carry and charge a compatible smartphone.
- You want a larger communication-focused color display.
- You want messaging or SOS controls through compatible Garmin watches or Edge devices.
Choose the fēnix 8 Pro if:
- You want a full multisport smartwatch, not just a communicator.
- Satellite and LTE connectivity on your wrist are important.
- You value LTE calling, LiveTrack, fitness metrics, training tools, and health features.
- You would rather avoid carrying a separate communicator.
Consider the GPSMAP H1i Plus if:
- Detailed on-device mapping is a priority.
- You need physical controls for gloves, rain, or difficult terrain.
- You want text, voice, and photo messaging from a larger handheld.
Remember the subscription cost
The hardware is only part of the ownership cost. Garmin’s manual confirms that an active satellite subscription is required for messaging, SOS, tracking, and weather. Before buying, check the plan available in your country, including activation charges, monthly or annual pricing, included messages, suspension rules, and overage fees.

Users are responsible for checking whether satellite communicators are permitted in the jurisdictions where they travel.
Verdict
The original Garmin inReach Mini 3 leak got the broad product direction right: a color-screen communicator with a redesigned interface and stronger messaging ambitions. But the finished lineup is more nuanced than the leak suggested.
The standard Mini 3 is a dedicated satellite communicator for text, SOS, tracking, weather, GPS, and compass functions. The Mini 3 Plus adds voice and photo messaging, but relies on a smartphone for those richer features. Neither offers the fēnix 8 Pro’s wrist-based fitness platform or combined satellite-and-LTE smartwatch experience.

For hikers, climbers, hunters, and overlanders, the Mini 3 family is best understood as a focused alternative to buying a premium watch—not as a replacement for the fēnix 8 Pro.
