Garmin’s System Software 23.18 began rolling out to selected older premium watches in September 2025. The catch was that the initial stable release reached non-Pro models first, leaving fēnix 7 Pro owners waiting. Garmin later listed 23.18 for Pro and non-Pro models too, so the delay was not a permanent exclusion. The update is now historical: later releases include 23.48, 25.11 and, for some models, 26.09.
What the catch was—and what happened afterward
At the start of the rollout, Garmin offered stable System Software 23.18 to selected non-Pro watches, including the standard fēnix 7 family. Pro-branded variants were not included at the same time. Garmin’s public announcement did not explain the staged availability, and the difference prompted the “catch” in contemporary coverage. Garmin’s forum announcement and changelog later identify 23.18 as a release for fēnix 7/tactix 7 Pro and non-Pro watches. In other words, the initial delay was real, but it was not a permanent Pro-model exclusion.
Garmin began the rollout around September 11–12, 2025, following the beta cycle. Availability could vary by exact model, hardware configuration, region and rollout phase; a shared software family does not mean every watch received the update simultaneously or used an identical package.

This table describes the broad rollout story, not a guarantee that every regional or hardware variant received 23.18. If your watch never displayed that number, it may have been delayed, used a different update path or moved directly to a later offered version.

What System Software 23.18 changed
Garmin’s changelog describes a maintenance-focused release: two notable additions or presentation changes, followed by a longer list of fixes. It was not a wholesale transfer of newer fēnix 8 features to older watches.
Features and interface refinements
- Added a rest-set tip in the Pool Swim activity.
- Added support for certain sensors pairing over ANT and BLE+.
- Changed the Breath Variation page to use a line graph.
- Updated the Recent Stress widget to resemble its fēnix 8 appearance.
Bug fixes
- Resolved a Climb Pro crash and connection issues with Kestrel devices.
- Fixed course distance being shown in nautical miles and incorrect distance while navigating a course.
- Addressed CT10 sensor-pairing failures and golf-club tracking issues.
- Fixed Hunt-activity navigation and strength-workout rep counting.
- Corrected weight displays in Strength activities and on the edit-set page.
- Fixed the IR widget not appearing automatically after its first pairing.
- Corrected “Last Ride” opening the Last Run page.
- Fixed incorrect lap-review data in Pool Swim.
- Stopped navigation prompts from playing when audio prompts were disabled.
- On tactix models, fixed an issue involving wind-direction changes while connecting to a laser rangefinder.
Garmin’s detailed list is in its 23.18 announcement. The prior stable version is described inconsistently in contemporary coverage and Garmin’s detailed records: references include 22.06 and 22.05. It is safest to describe it as the previous 22.xx branch rather than assign one predecessor to every model.

23.18 is not the version to seek now
By 2026, 23.18 had been superseded. Garmin’s changelog records later releases including 23.48 in December 2025 and 25.11 in January 2026. Garmin’s fēnix 7 support information lists 26.09 in April 2026, and Garmin has a separate 26.09 record for epix Gen 2 and epix Pro. That does not establish that every fēnix, epix, Enduro 2 and tactix 7 variant is on 26.09; firmware availability is model-specific and can change over time. If you own one of these watches, install the newest version Garmin offers for your exact device rather than trying to find or manually install 23.18. To check, sync the watch with Garmin Connect and allow it to connect, or connect it to a computer and use Garmin Express. Garmin describes both automatic smartwatch updates and Express as update routes in its update guidance. Before installing, sync important activity data and make sure the watch has adequate charge. Menu names and update controls differ by model, so consult its manual for the exact on-watch path.

If an update does not appear, the watch may be in a staged rollout, may need a completed sync, may have a different model or regional package, or may already be on a newer branch. Garmin Express may also show a separate map or component update rather than a system-software version. Avoid unofficial firmware downloads or a manual downgrade: Garmin does not present rollback as a normal consumer update route, and it can cause data, configuration or support problems.

At the time, 23.18 was a sensible update for owners offered the official release: its fixes addressed crashes, navigation, pairing and workout-data problems. For a current owner, the practical choice is simpler—use the latest official firmware offered for the exact watch, rather than treating 23.18 as a current target. As with any update, sync first and allow the installation to finish.

Reports from users about heart-rate or optical-sensor behavior on later firmware versions are anecdotal; they do not establish a Garmin-confirmed defect or prove that an update caused a problem. If you encounter an issue, record the watch model and software version and consult Garmin support rather than assuming the same behavior applies to every device. The 23.18 changelog itself does not claim to fix heart-rate problems.

The temporary Pro delay alone is not a reason to rule out a fēnix 7 Pro, epix Pro or another watch in this generation: Garmin later included Pro models in the 23.18 record, and some of the family continued receiving later software. But firmware history is not a promise of identical future support across the range. Before buying, verify the exact model and variant, ask whether it can receive the latest official update, and check battery condition, GPS performance and optical-heart-rate operation. Confirm that any region-dependent feature you need—such as ECG—is available for that model and location. Older watches can be good value at a meaningful discount; choose a newer generation if you specifically need newer hardware or features the older model lacks.
