Garmin’s Varia RearVue 820 does more than warn that a vehicle is approaching: it can estimate whether the vehicle is small, medium, or large, show its lateral position, and flag its approach as a higher threat on compatible displays. That bundle of radar-derived context—not a camera or a guarantee of crash prevention—is the feature behind the claim that the latest Varia adds what cyclists have been asking for. At $299.99, it is a premium upgrade, especially for riders who already own a working RTL515.
What is the feature cyclists are getting?
Most rear radar lights answer a simple question: is a vehicle approaching from behind? The RearVue 820 is designed to add context. Garmin says it can estimate a vehicle’s size, indicate lateral movement or position, and assign threat information based on factors including speed, size, and lateral range. It can also track a vehicle that remains behind at roughly the rider’s speed. Garmin calls this advanced vehicle tracking; the capabilities are described in its launch announcement and product specifications.
In practical terms, the goal is to provide more than a single approaching-vehicle dot or tone: a rider may be able to tell whether traffic appears to be overtaking, lingering behind, or moving laterally, and whether Garmin’s system considers its approach higher threat. These are estimates from radar behavior, not confirmed vehicle identities or infallible judgments of danger. This is not automotive-style lane detection, and it does not identify a vehicle’s make, model, or license plate.

The headline’s “one feature” is therefore shorthand for a group of related tracking and alert capabilities. Garmin has not established that cyclists universally demanded them; the useful question is whether that extra information would change how you ride.

What changed, and what the numbers mean
The 820 combines the new tracking features with a brighter rear light, brake-light behavior, USB-C charging, a redesigned seat-post mount, and longer claimed battery life than Garmin’s older RTL515. The following figures are Garmin specifications, not independent guarantees of performance in every road or weather condition.

The 175 m figure is the radar’s maximum claimed vehicle-detection range; the 2 km figure refers to how far away the light may be visible. They describe different things. Actual radar detection depends on mounting, road shape, obstructions, weather, and the vehicle, so neither distance should be treated as a guaranteed warning margin. Battery claims also vary by mode: 30 hours is for radar-only use, not the brightest flashing-light setting.

The unit also detects deceleration and produces a distinctive flashing brake-light pattern. That may make slowing more apparent to traffic behind, but it cannot ensure that a driver sees or responds to the light.

How will the alerts reach you?
The radar is mounted at the rear of the bike; the rider-facing information comes through a paired display or phone. Garmin’s radar-data documentation describes compatible Garmin display support.

- Garmin Edge: Compatible Edge computers can show radar data. Do not assume every Edge model or firmware version displays every advanced classification; check the exact model’s compatibility and current software.
- Garmin watches: Select compatible watches can provide alerts, including vibration. Garmin says voice alerts for approaching vehicles are in public beta for select watches, so availability depends on the specific watch and software.
- Varia smartphone app: The phone app provides a way to receive radar alerts and control the device without an Edge computer. The phone needs to be mounted and charged, and an app alert is not a reason to look down in unsafe traffic.
- Third-party head units: Standard ANT+ radar alerts may work, but that does not mean proprietary or expanded 820 information will appear. Confirm support for your exact head unit before buying if the classifications are the point of the upgrade.
So, the 820 can be used without a Garmin cycling computer, but it is not a self-contained rider-facing radar screen. For richer alerts, plan to pair it with a compatible device or use the Varia app.
What same-speed tracking does—and its limits
Same-speed tracking is intended to keep identifying a vehicle that follows behind at approximately the cyclist’s speed instead of overtaking immediately. That could be useful when a driver trails for a while before passing. It does not mean the radar can continuously identify every vehicle in every situation.

Garmin’s radar-detection guidance warns that detection can be limited when the road cannot be detected properly, including because of slow speeds, snow, ice, heavy rain, obstructions, or incorrect mounting. Curves, hills, parked vehicles, vegetation, adjacent-lane traffic, and groups of road users can also make the display harder to interpret. Treat vehicle size and threat as radar-derived estimates, not a camera-confirmed classification.
Is it a worthwhile upgrade from the RTL515?
For an RTL515 owner, the key comparison is not “radar versus no radar.” It is whether the 820’s extra context and hardware improvements justify replacing a device that already provides useful rear-vehicle alerts. Garmin lists the RearVue 820 at $299.99 USD at launch. The price and availability may vary by market and retailer.

- Consider upgrading if you often ride in fast or heavy traffic, want size and threat information, would use lateral-position cues, need longer claimed battery life or USB-C, or want the brighter light and brake-light behavior. The advanced alerts are most compelling if your Edge, watch, or phone setup can actually show them.
- Keep a working RTL515 if a basic approaching-vehicle warning is enough, you are satisfied with its battery and charging, or your current display would not expose the new information. Riders mostly on separated paths or quiet roads may get little practical value from paying for more detailed tracking.
- Reconsider the purchase if you want video recording, automatic emergency response, or a low-cost tail light. The RearVue 820 is a radar tail light, not a camera-equipped Varia. Garmin’s RCT715 is the relevant Varia option to investigate if recording is the priority, but it is a different product category.
Other radar-light lines, including Bryton Gardia, Magene L508, and Trek/Bontrager CarBack, are comparison candidates for riders prioritizing a different ecosystem or price tier. Check current prices and compatibility directly, and verify that your head unit supports the specific data you care about; no alternative is a universal winner for every setup.
Setup and software matter
Mounting and current firmware affect the experience. Before relying on the radar in traffic:
- Mount it vertically and centrally at the rear of the bike, following Garmin’s instructions.
- Keep the radar face clear; check that a rack, bag, mudguard, or mounting hardware does not obstruct it.
- Pair it with your intended Edge, watch, or phone, then confirm that the alerts you want are available on that device.
- Update the radar software and test the alert display in a safe place before riding in traffic.
Garmin’s support page lists software version 6.70, dated May 2026, with radar algorithm updates and improvements, including reduced false high-threat alerts in certain close-range scenarios. That is a reminder that alert interpretation can change with software; firmware does not eliminate the possibility of confusing or inaccurate classifications. Garmin documents updates through the Varia app or Garmin Express; the Express procedure may require at least 15% battery.

The RearVue 820’s most meaningful addition is not merely a longer-range warning, but an attempt to tell you more about a vehicle behind you: its estimated size, position, movement, and threat. That can be valuable for riders who regularly share busy roads and have a compatible screen or phone setup. It does not turn the radar into a safety system that makes decisions for you, and its premium price is difficult to justify if your current Varia already gives you enough warning.
Garmin’s manual is explicit that radar supplements rather than replaces attention and judgment. Keep looking and listening, signal and check before changing position, and make riding decisions based on the road—not solely on an alert.
