Switching the watch’s default keyboard to Samsung Keyboard is the most reliable workaround. Gboard was reported failing on some Galaxy Watches running Wear OS 4 in February 2024: affected apps could show no keyboard, a black or blank input screen, or haptic feedback without visible keys. Similar input failures have since been reported on newer Wear OS devices, but there is no evidence that the identical bug affects every Wear OS 4 watch in 2026.
What is actually broken?
This is not usually a total touchscreen or keyboard failure. Gboard may work in Messages, Google Play, or another text field, then fail when an app opens a particular compose or search screen. Typical symptoms include:
- The input screen opens but no keys appear.
- The keyboard area is black or blank.
- Taps produce haptic feedback but no visible text or keys.
- Voice input or handwriting may still work while touch typing fails.
- Google Keep, Google Maps and other apps can behave differently on the same watch.
The original reports concerned Galaxy Watch4, Watch5 and Watch6 devices using Wear OS 4, with Samsung Keyboard generally working in the same affected apps. That pattern suggests an app-specific input-method compatibility problem involving Gboard, Samsung’s Wear OS software and the app’s text-entry screen—not proof that Gboard is broken everywhere. Make Samsung Keyboard the default
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap General, then Input.
- Open Keyboard list and default, Default keyboard, or the similarly named option.
- Select Samsung Keyboard.
- Close and reopen the affected app. Restart the watch if it still displays the old input state.
Samsung documents keyboard controls under Settings → General → Input, but labels and available options vary by Galaxy Watch model and One UI Watch version. (Samsung support) Switching keyboards does not erase notes or other watch data, and you can leave Gboard installed so you can test it again after an update.

Samsung Keyboard supports on-watch typing, handwriting and voice input, although languages, layouts and suggestions differ from Gboard. (Samsung feature documentation)
If you want to keep Gboard
- Confirm Gboard is installed, enabled and selected as the default keyboard.
- Update Gboard, the affected app, Google Play services and the watch software.
- Restart the watch.
- Test Gboard in a known-working field, such as composing a message or searching Google Play.
- Try the failing app again.
If Gboard works elsewhere, the fault is probably limited to that app or its input flow. If it fails in several apps, use Samsung Keyboard as the default while reporting the problem. Google lists Gboard as a supported Wear OS app, but support does not guarantee identical behavior on every watch or app. (Google Wear OS app guidance)

App-specific things to try
Google Maps
A Google Wear OS community product expert reported that, on a later Wear OS device, opening a category such as Coffee or Restaurants and then using the search interface displayed the keyboard when the usual route did not. This may simply invoke a different text field; it is a community workaround, not a confirmed platform fix. (Google community thread)

If creating or editing a note produces a black or blank screen, switch to Samsung Keyboard, fully close Keep, reopen it and test again. Update Keep and restart the watch if necessary. Later community advice specifically recommends this keyboard change for a Galaxy Watch note-editing problem, but it remains anecdotal. (Google community thread)

What not to do first
Do not factory-reset the watch as a routine keyboard fix. A reset erases data and settings, requires re-pairing and may not change an app-specific compatibility defect. Do not uninstall Gboard merely because one app fails; changing the default keyboard is safer and reversible. Reinstalling Gboard or installing it on the paired phone may help selection problems in some configurations, but neither is a confirmed universal fix. (anecdotal Samsung community report)

If no keyboard works, check for pending system updates, restart the watch, test voice input and handwriting, and verify the app is current. Capture a photo or screen recording before contacting Samsung or Google support.

Alternatives and trade-offs
Voice input or handwriting can bypass a broken touch keyboard, though microphone permissions and recognition can fail separately. A third-party option such as WatchKeys supports Wear OS 4 or later and was listed at $0.99 on August 16, 2026. It offers a small-display-oriented layout, but it is not proven to fix every app-specific input bug. Try the built-in Samsung workaround first.

No. Reports describe app- or input-screen-specific failures. Gboard can work normally in other apps on the same watch.

Does this affect every Galaxy Watch or Pixel Watch?
No universal scope has been established. The strongest historical evidence concerns Galaxy Watch4–6 devices on Wear OS 4; later reports involve other models and versions.
Can I keep Gboard installed while using Samsung Keyboard?
Yes. Change only the default keyboard. Keeping Gboard installed lets you switch back after updates.
Is the problem fixed in Wear OS 5 or 6?
There is no authoritative statement proving a universal fix. Later community reports show that similar input failures can still occur on newer versions.
Should I factory-reset the watch?
No, not as a first response. Reset only after updates, keyboard switching, app testing and support troubleshooting fail.
The Bottom Line
For a Galaxy Watch whose Gboard works in some places but shows a blank or missing keyboard in others, switch to Settings → General → Input → Keyboard list and default → Samsung Keyboard. Treat that as a workaround, keep Gboard installed for retesting, and report the app-specific failure with your watch and software details.
