Yes, Google Assistant is being phased out on Wear OS, but the April 2025 change was initially a branding transition—not an immediate shutdown. The complication became “Google,” the app was labeled “Digital assistant,” and generic sparkle artwork replaced the Assistant logo. Google then introduced Gemini for compatible watches. According to a removal notice reported by Tom’s Guide and TechRadar, Assistant access on Android and Wear OS is scheduled to begin disappearing on September 4, 2026. The rollout may take several weeks, so watches will not all change at once.
What changed, and when?
The transition has three distinct stages:

Is Gemini replacing Google Assistant?
On supported watches, yes. Gemini is intended to become the replacement assistant, but eligibility depends on the watch model, Wear OS version, country and language. The September date should be understood as the start of a staged service removal, not a universal midnight cutoff. Once Assistant access has been removed from a device, the reported notice says users will no longer be able to switch back.
What Gemini can do on a watch
Google’s current listing advertises the ability to:

- Handle conversational requests without requiring a rigid command format.
Internet access, a compatible paired phone or LTE connection, and supported account, country and language settings may be required. Advertised capabilities are not a guarantee that every app or command works on every watch.

What may not carry over from Assistant
Google explicitly says that some Google Assistant voice features are not yet available through Gemini. Before the cutoff, test the commands you actually rely on:
- Smart-home devices and routines
- Calendar events and reminders
- Messaging and contact actions
- Music playback
- Navigation
- Third-party app integrations
- Accessibility functions, including voice behavior you use with TalkBack
- Requests made while the watch is away from the phone
Gemini is therefore more than a new label, but it is not a guaranteed one-for-one feature replacement.

Which Wear OS watches are affected?
Google’s support information says Assistant is available on selected watches running Wear OS 3.0 or later, while Gemini is available on selected watches running Wear OS 4.0 or later. That does not mean every Wear OS 4 watch receives every Gemini feature. Manufacturer, device, country and language support still apply. Google also says Assistant is no longer supported on Wear OS 2.x; owners of those older watches should not assume Gemini will be available.

How to switch to Gemini
- Check the watch model and confirm it runs a supported Wear OS version, normally Wear OS 4 or later for Gemini candidates.
- Update the watch and phone, then update the Google/Gemini or Digital assistant app from the watch’s Play Store.
- Open the watch’s assistant or digital-assistant settings and choose Gemini when the option appears.
- Complete any phone-side setup with the Google account paired to the watch.
- Test wake-word, button or gesture activation, messages, reminders, music and any smart-home actions you need.
Google’s listing says you can switch back to Assistant in Settings where that option remains available. Treat that as temporary: the option is expected to disappear after Assistant access is removed.
If Gemini does not appear
- Install all watch, phone, Google Play services and assistant-app updates.
- Restart both devices and allow them time to synchronize.
- Check that the intended Google account is selected on the phone paired with the watch.
- Confirm country and language eligibility and maintain a phone, Wi-Fi or LTE connection.
- Check the manufacturer’s compatibility documentation and allow for a staged rollout.
A Gemini app on the phone does not prove that Gemini is enabled on the watch. Conversely, generic “Google” branding does not prove Assistant has already stopped working.

Should you buy a new watch?
Do not replace a watch solely because its Assistant icon changed; the 2025 visual update initially left functionality intact. Consider an upgrade only if the manufacturer confirms that your current model cannot receive Gemini, your watch is stuck on an unsupported software version, or a critical Assistant command has no working Gemini equivalent. A new watch will not necessarily fix a country, language, account or staged-rollout limitation.

What the September change does—and does not—mean
The reported September timetable applies to Android and Wear OS devices. Google TV, Google Home products, Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in have separate transition schedules. “Google Assistant is disappearing everywhere on September 4” is therefore too broad.

Will my Wear OS watch stop working on September 4, 2026?
No. The reported date is when Assistant removal is scheduled to begin, and the rollout may take several weeks. The watch itself will continue to function, but Assistant access may be replaced by Gemini or removed if the model is not eligible.
Why did my Assistant complication become “Google”?
That was part of the April 2025 branding change. The complication moved under the Digital assistant app and received generic artwork; it did not initially mean Assistant had stopped working.

Can I keep using Google Assistant instead of Gemini?
Only while Assistant remains available on your device and the switch-back control is offered. Google’s reported notice says switching back will no longer be possible after removal reaches the device.
The Bottom Line
The 2025 logo and label changes were the first signal, not the shutdown itself. Gemini is now the planned assistant for supported Wear OS watches, while Google Assistant removal is reported to begin September 4, 2026. Check your model, software version, region and language, then test your essential commands before the staged transition reaches your watch.
