Yes—Google announced a longer-than-usual gap in Pixel Watch system updates. On November 12, 2024, it said the next update for Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2, and Pixel Watch 3 was planned for March 2025. The rollout began on March 4 and brought Wear OS 5.1, based on Android 15. It did not reach every watch at once, however: Google issued corrective updates in April for some problems and gave owners still on the November software a later route to the March release.
What changed in the Pixel Watch update schedule?
Google’s November 2024 update announcement said the next Pixel Watch system update was planned for March 2025. That meant an unusually long gap—roughly four months—between the November update and the next planned release for the original Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2, and Pixel Watch 3.
The wording matters: Google said the next update was planned for March. It did not publish a detailed explanation for the gap, nor did that announcement alone establish a permanent new policy. In March, Google said the following update would target June 2025 and quarterly updates thereafter. That described an intended schedule, not a guarantee that every release or every device would follow an exact quarterly timetable.

Google did not say the change was caused by engineering resources, quality-control problems, or a specific Wear OS issue. Those explanations should be treated as speculation, not confirmed reasons.

March’s update was Wear OS 5.1, not just a security patch
The update began rolling out on March 4, 2025. It moved the Pixel Watch lineup to Wear OS 5.1, based on Android 15, and included feature changes, performance improvements, and bug fixes. Google announced these builds:
- Original Pixel Watch:
BP1A.250305.019.W2 - Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3:
BP1A.250305.019.W3
Google distributed the release in phases over several weeks, with timing varying by device and carrier. “Rolled out March 4” therefore means the release started that day—not that every owner could install it immediately.

The changes announced for March were not all identical across models, and not every feature necessarily came from the core system download. Some depended on a particular watch, region, or app. Play Store, Pixel Watch app, and Fitbit app updates can also arrive separately from a watch operating-system OTA.
Features and model differences
| Change | Who it applied to | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Wear OS 5.1 | Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2, and Pixel Watch 3 | Phased rollout; build suffixes differed by model. |
| Loss of Pulse Detection expansion | Pixel Watch 3 | Google said the feature had U.S. FDA clearance and would expand to U.S. users toward the end of March. It was not a feature for every Pixel Watch model. |
| On-device Auto Bedtime Mode | Pixel Watch 2 | Google specifically announced the expansion for this model. |
| Menstrual-health improvements | Described for Pixel Watch 3 | These involved Fitbit and the app ecosystem; they were not necessarily delivered by the system OTA alone. |
| More context-sensitive media controls | Pixel Watch lineup, subject to app and device support | Controls could adapt to the content, such as podcasts in YouTube Music. |
| Revised step-counting algorithm | Initially listed for the March release | Google later removed the change from the broader April update after reports of unexpectedly high step counts. |
These details come from Google’s March 2025 release announcement. In particular, Loss of Pulse Detection should not be read as a general Pixel Watch feature: Google described the U.S. expansion for Pixel Watch 3.

The March rollout needed April fixes
The delayed release was not the end of the story. After Wear OS 5.1 began arriving, owners reported issues including delayed notifications, difficulty modifying or adding watch faces through the Pixel Watch phone app, Fitbit synchronization concerns, and unexpectedly high step counts in some situations. Google acknowledged investigating notification delays; Android Authority reported on the notification problem.
Google began an April corrective update for watches already running the March software. Its April announcement listed fixes for delayed notifications and for users unable to modify or add watch faces from the Pixel Watch mobile app. Google also reversed the revised step-counting algorithm after users reported inflated counts.

Owners who had not received the March update needed a different path. Google later said that users still on the November 2024 release would receive a separate update in the following weeks. That April build included Wear OS 5.1, the March feature changes, and further fixes, but left out the revised step-counting algorithm.

What to check if your Pixel Watch still says it is up to date
A message that a watch is up to date does not prove that every device has received the latest release: Google’s distribution was phased, and some owners were still on the November software during April. If you are checking an older rollout record or troubleshooting a missing update:

- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
- On the watch, open Settings → System → System updates. Menu wording can differ by Wear OS version.
- Check the software version and update date in the watch’s system or about information. Compare the build with the one announced for your model rather than assuming every model uses the same suffix.
- Keep the watch charged and connected to Wi-Fi where available, then check again later. A staged rollout may not have reached your device yet.
- Check the Pixel Watch and Fitbit apps on your phone separately. App updates can arrive independently of a system OTA.
- If the watch is still on November 2024 software, remember that Google announced a separate April update path for users who missed March. A missing March notification did not, by itself, mean the watch was unsupported.
Do not treat a factory reset as the first response to a delayed OTA: Google’s rollout announcements do not identify it as the remedy for this schedule or staging issue.
What the schedule change did—and did not—mean
The gap was real, and the March release was substantial: it delivered Wear OS 5.1 rather than only a routine security patch. But the launch date, the date an individual watch received the update, and the later completion of the rollout were separate things. April’s fixes and catch-up release made that especially clear.
Google’s March statement pointed toward a June target and quarterly updates afterward, but the November announcement gave no detailed reason for changing the schedule. The careful conclusion is that Google announced a March next update, started it on March 4, and later described quarterly releases as its intended direction—not that every owner received the same package on the same day or that a fixed cadence was guaranteed.
