Fitbit has not been discontinued. In August 2024, Google said it had “no current plans” to discontinue the Fitbit Sense or Versa product lines. That was a rejection of reports that Fitbit hardware was being abandoned—not a guarantee that Google would keep producing Fitbit smartwatches indefinitely.
As of August 18, 2026, Fitbit remains active in trackers, health services, children’s wearables, and newer hardware such as Fitbit Air. But Google’s product strategy is clearer: Pixel Watch is the company’s main smartwatch platform, while Fitbit is increasingly focused on fitness tracking, wellness, and health software.
What Google actually denied
The August 2024 report was prompted by comments from Sandeep Waraich, Google’s senior director of product management for Pixel Wearables. Coverage interpreted those comments as meaning Fitbit would concentrate on simple, long-lasting trackers while Pixel Watch became Google’s smartwatch product.

Google subsequently told Ars Technica that it had “no current plans” to discontinue the Fitbit Sense or Versa product lines and that new Fitbit products and innovation would continue.

That wording matters. Google denied the immediate claim that Fitbit products were being abandoned. It did not promise annual Versa or Sense releases, guarantee that Fitbit would remain its primary smartwatch brand, or commit to preserving every Fitbit app, service, account system, and product category unchanged.
Why the rumor seemed plausible
Google’s Pixel Watch strategy made the report believable for several reasons:
- Pixel Watch became Google’s full smartwatch platform, with Wear OS, apps, notifications, calls, and Google services.
- Pixel Watch increasingly adopted Fitbit health and fitness features.
- The Fitbit Versa 4 and Sense 2 offered a less compelling smartwatch proposition than some earlier Fitbit watches, including reduced support for features such as third-party apps and Wi-Fi-related functionality discussed in contemporary coverage.
- Google made Daily Readiness Score available to Pixel Watch 3 owners without the previous Fitbit Premium requirement, reducing the separation between the two product families.
These developments suggested a portfolio realignment. They did not, by themselves, prove that every Fitbit product was being canceled.
Fitbit and Pixel Watch now occupy different roles
Google’s current U.S. Store catalog lists Fitbit Air, Charge 6, Inspire 3, Versa 4, Sense 2, and Ace LTE alongside the Pixel Watch range. The company’s official comparison page presents Fitbit and Pixel Watch products together, but their roles are distinct.

This is best described as portfolio realignment, not as Fitbit being dead. Fitbit hardware remains available, but Pixel Watch is the safer choice for buyers specifically seeking Google’s actively promoted smartwatch ecosystem.

Fitbit Air is evidence that Fitbit hardware continues
Google announced Fitbit Air on May 7, 2026. It is a lightweight, screen-free device designed around continuous health and wellness tracking rather than smartwatch functions.
Fitbit Air matters because it is current evidence of investment in Fitbit-branded hardware. It also reinforces Google’s apparent division of labor: Fitbit handles discreet, longer-lasting tracking devices, while Pixel Watch handles the full smartwatch experience.

Fitbit Air does not prove that Google will produce a next-generation Versa or Sense. A new Fitbit tracker demonstrates continued investment in the brand, not a guarantee that every former product line will return.
The Fitbit app became Google Health
One of the biggest changes for existing owners happened in software rather than hardware. Google says that, beginning May 19, 2026, the Fitbit app became the Google Health app. The redesigned app is organized into four tabs: Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health.
Google also says Fitbit Premium was renamed Google Health Premium. The details are documented in Google’s support information.

The rebrand can understandably make Fitbit seem as though it has vanished, but the two changes are not equivalent:

- The former Fitbit app now uses the Google Health name.
- Fitbit health data, coaching, and services are being absorbed into a broader Google health platform.
- Changing the app’s name does not automatically disable existing Fitbit devices.
This is brand continuity on hardware combined with software consolidation under Google Health.
Are existing Fitbit devices still supported?
Google’s security-support policy says Fitbit devices receive security updates for at least two years after the applicable device was last sold on Fitbit.com or the Google Store. Google may extend the period while a product remains on sale.

These are minimum security-update guarantees, not promises of new features, replacement parts, repair availability, or indefinite app compatibility. Google’s legacy-device policy says older devices may eventually lose software updates, support, or the ability to pair with the Fitbit app.
A support date should therefore not be treated as a guaranteed shutdown date. A device may continue syncing after meaningful feature development or security support has ended, while some functions can become unavailable earlier because of app, account, phone, or service changes.

Fitbit accounts are a separate issue
Google has been moving Fitbit users toward Google Accounts. Account migration should not be confused with discontinuing Fitbit hardware.
Because migration requirements and deadlines can change, owners should check the current instructions inside Google’s official Fitbit or Google Health support pages rather than rely on older articles or social-media posts. An account transition can be required even when the wearable itself remains supported.
What happened to Fitbit Pay?
Fitbit Pay is another example of why broad “Fitbit is being discontinued” headlines can mislead. Google’s developer documentation says Fitbit Pay was being discontinued, with Google Wallet on Fitbit becoming the default payment solution for newer devices launched after November 2022 in supported markets outside Japan and Taiwan.
That is a payment-service change, not proof that Fitbit hardware has been canceled. Payment availability remains dependent on the device, country, bank, and service support.
What current and prospective owners should do
If your Fitbit still works
- Continue using it while it remains compatible with the Google Health ecosystem.
- Check the device-specific security-support date.
- Complete Google Account migration if Google requires it.
- Do not assume that the end of Fitbit Pay means the tracker itself has stopped working.
If you are replacing a Fitbit smartwatch
Choose Pixel Watch if you want Wear OS, smartwatch apps, calls, notifications, and deeper Google services. Choose a Fitbit tracker if your priorities are sleep and fitness tracking, lighter hardware, fewer distractions, and longer battery life.

Versa 4 and Sense 2 are still listed in the U.S. Google Store, but their presence is not a promise of successor models. Buyers who want the clearest long-term path for Google smartwatch features should treat Pixel Watch as the more direct choice.
If you want a tracker rather than a smartwatch
Fitbit Air is the most stripped-down option, with a screen-free design. Inspire 3 is a compact, simpler tracker, while Charge 6 adds a display and more fitness-focused capabilities. Google lists Charge 6 and Inspire 3 as compatible with most phones running Android 11 or newer or iOS 16.4 or newer.
If you depend on a particular feature
Verify the exact model, country, phone platform, app version, and subscription requirements. Health metrics, coaching, payments, and smartwatch features can have different availability rules. Google Health Premium features may also vary by market and eligibility.

Prices are not proof of a product’s future
When checked, the U.S. Google Store showed Charge 6 at $159.95, Inspire 3 at $99.95, and Pixel Watch 4 from $349.99. These are time-sensitive U.S. prices, not permanent list prices. Temporary discounts should not be treated as evidence that a product is being discontinued.
Google Health Premium trials and renewal terms can also vary by product, promotion, date, and market. Before accepting a trial, check its duration, renewal price, which features require membership, and whether the offer is limited to eligible or new subscribers.
The accurate answer in 2026
Google was right to deny that Fitbit products were being discontinued as a whole. Fitbit remains present in Google’s catalog, and Fitbit Air shows that the brand is still being used for new hardware.
But “nothing changed” would also be wrong. Google has substantially reorganized Fitbit. Pixel Watch is now the company’s main smartwatch path, while Fitbit is increasingly centered on trackers, health data, coaching, and wellness services. The Fitbit app and Premium subscription have also moved under the Google Health name.
